Where did the idea of wrapping presents come from and why ?

Q. Presents from Christmas presents to birthday presents and often other gift giving occasions as well often involve giving a gift that is somehow wrapped in colorful paper.
Who started this and why?
As long as we are on the gift giving idea when did Christmas gift giving start? Did it start with Christmas?
When did birthday present giving idea start ?

A. Timeline
Gifts have been wrapped since the invention of paper in 105 A.D. in China. The paper-making process was kept a secret by the Chinese for centuries, but by 800 A.D. the process was known in Egypt. The secret spread to Europe, where the first paper mill was started in 1085.

Wallpaper, first made in England in 1509, was the forerunner of gift wrap and was used briefly, but it cracked or tore when folded. By the early 20th century, gifts were wrapped in plain brown paper or tissue.

America's gift wrap industry had humble beginnings in Hallmark founder Joyce C. Hall's downtown Kansas City, Mo., store in the early 20th century. Hall is known for being the founder of the greeting card industry, but he can also be credited with the "invention" of present-day gift wrap. Hallmark's launch of printed gift wrap came about almost by accident.

Before Christmas in 1917, the Hall Brothers' store had sold out of the white, red and green tissue and one holly pattern for customers to use to wrap holiday packages. Some decorative envelope lining papers from France were brought from the manufacturing plant and put on top of a showcase, for 10 cents a sheet, and they sold quickly. The next year, the sheets were offered three for 25 cents and they again sold out. Soon gift wrap became the first product Hallmark made that was a departure from greeting cards.

In the 1930s, Hallmark introduced Hall Sheen ribbon, the shiny kind that sticks to itself when licked like a stamp. It's still the company's most popular ribbon, even after all those years.

Hallmark introduced jumbo plastic gift bags for large items in the 1970s, paper gift bags with handles in 1987, and curl cascade ribbons in 1994.

Today, Hallmark is the leader of the gift wrap industry. All Hallmark brands, including both seasonal and everyday gift wrap, offer more than 1,000 designs of wrap, 200 different ribbons and bows in 35 colors, more than 1,600 gift bag designs, and other innovative wrapping ideas such as tissue paper, curl cascades, gift enclosures, wire-edged ribbons, and many novelty accessories.

What could I get my best friends for their birthdays which is not very expensive?
Q. So my guy best friend's birthday is in 8 days and I want to get him something really good but not very expensive. Just for a present before, he gave me a massive Angry Bird toy that costed $35 so I want to get him something that costs about the same amount.

In 9 days is my girl best friend's birthday. I want to get her something really good but not really expensive. Something over $20 and under $50 preferably.

P.S. I don't want to get them money, I actually want to get them an actual present but something that I can get quick like buy at the shops!

A. without knowing anything specifically about either of them... i'm just gonna throw out random ideas

guy gifts around $35
-gift certificate to fav. restaurant or store
- a used video game he might be into. (gamestop has bunches)
- maybe get somethin that he keep for a while like a picture of you and him or like of him and his some other friends or family in a cool looking picture frame
- a cool necklace
- a zippo lighter
- a book ( something he would find interesting)
- a cd or itunes gift certificate
- you could go with cologne but personally i think this gift is too played out for guys. but some guys like that so go with you gut on what he might like

for a girl $20 -$50 (remember im a guy writing this... )
- perfume
- cool girly scrap book
- girly socks
- some kind of girly blanket (like fleece)
.... that's about all i got. i'm stumped there
