What gift should I give my only sister for her 40th B'day?

Q. I want a keepsake, but short of cash..about $100. I was also thinking "Candy that you grew up with" it comes in a box with a Year of Birth Card and maybe a gift certificate. I need to mail it..she is in another state as well. Ideas please!

A. Mailing candy may not be the best idea, since it is summer and candy tends to melt in heat.

An interesting idea is a newspaper from the day she was born.
http://www.comforthouse.com/newfromdayyo.html
I got one from the day I was born in the same city...It is very cool to have around.

Something I've done before that is kind of silly is to buy 40 of a bunch of items. We did this for my grandmother's 80th birthday. We gave her 80 band-aids, a package of 80 envelopes, 80 coffee pods, etc. So everything she opened either had the number 80 on it, or there were 80 of them. She had a great laugh. It does take some time wondering the aisles of Target and Wal-mart and a little planning, but it is generally inexpensive. You could include a $40 gift card to her favorite store or restaurant with the money you save. She won't forget it, because it is so funny to open all of those little things, it makes a great memory.

Another option is to send 40 of her favorite flower, like 40 roses, irises, etc. This might be nice because people tend to be a little on the mean side when someone turns 40.

Whats a good birthday idea for my guy friend?
Q. Okay so me and my sister already got him something. But I want to make him something. But I don't know what. Got any suggestions? He's turning 16. And I really want to make him something special.

A. Here are Some Very Tasty Handmade Gift Ideas:

* Stir up a big batch of your favorite cookie dough. Either pack it into tubs (you can decorate them with markers or stickers) OR form it into logs, wrap with colorful plastic wrap and tie with ribbons. Include baking directions. Eating right out of the tub is allowed! This can stay in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or you can freeze it for several months.
* Make a giant homemade cheesecake with fresh berries or chocolate.
* You can incorporate this quick handmade gift idea into your regular baking or cooking. It is called a “bread of the month” service. Bake and deliver a different kind of bread once a month for the year. Other foods that are great for monthly delivery are cookies or soup.

Here You Can Find a Quick Handmade Gift Idea for a Man:

* Make a compilation CD or cassette of favorite songs. You can title it, “Favorites from the 80’s” or “Best of Jazz”. Add a cover that you design yourself by hand or on the computer.
* Make or buy a little blank book. Decorate it according to this man’s interests or lifestyle. Take it around secretly to all his friends and family and ask them to write the answer to this question on a page: What do you like and respect most about (his name)?
* Paint a sign or nice rock with his name and/or house number and plant in his front yard.

Gd luck! :)

Sweet 16 gift ideas for best friend?
Q. So, as you know, my best friend is going to turn 16. She has been my best friend for 8 years now and I want to get her something special. I have saved up $80 to spend on a great gift. Any ideas?
Her birthday is on September 1st.
She is not a girly girl.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I know that something expensive isn't necessarily the best, it just has to be fun and special.

A. i think one of the coolest things to do would be for you to by a photoframe (quite big) which is split for different photos - like a collage photoframe. then print out some of the photos you have with her like when you were messing around at someones house, or a holiday or something like that.
this is what i mean by a collage frame : http://cdn.dealsdirect.net/m/products/288/9288/1/product1_9288.jpg

Its not girly but it will mean a lot to her :)
try to have photos from when you were really little so the collage would be like a timeline of your friendship:)

hope this helps:)

What are some great things for Married Couples to do for Valentines Day?

Q. Me and My Husband are trying to find some good ideas to do for Valentines Day. We were gonna go see a movie but we wont be able to so I guess were just gonna rent a movie and get some Chinese food to bring home and eat but we want to find some other things to do before the movie and food. And also any gift ideas would be greatly appreciated cause I have no clue what to get him lol. Thanks and God Bless!
Please dont say sex or anything bout getting lingerie cause I know all that already.

A. Read the book? maybe? Or check out his motorcycle? Or Make a private sexy show with good lingerie, not trash lingerie, but real attractive one. Which you will wear and remember on next months. It is Valentines Day, not the 4 of July. Give him one day of real SHOW of his dream. What is Valenines Day is about? For you? Pick real good lingerie for example Look Fatal http://www.laurela.com/Brands/Lise_Charmel/155/10
And after show you could wear it and remember what was happened in it.
Maybe I'm wrong, but man is animal, they want a show going on.

What is a good gift to give to someone, to show forgiveness?
Q. I am leading a lesson to Sunday school class (ages 6-11). I realize the greatest gift is forgiveness ;however, to reinforce the lesson, I will have the kids give a beautifully wrapped (inexpensive) gift to someone they forgive. Any ideas of something that is inexpensive but will be a nice gift of forgiveness?

A. When I think of forgiveness, I think of a heart. You forgive from your heart! Since Valentine's Day wasn't that very long ago, possibly they just may have something with a heart on it that they could use & put "Forgiveness comes from my heart". If it was a small box of candy or something of that nature, it could be used to put earrings or little trinkets in. Or even use it to put a note in it that they forgave so in so today with the date on it. Or that so in so forgave them today with the date on it. It would be their box of forgiveness!...:)

What would be a great valentines gift?
Q. I'm in need a cool valentines gift idea for my boyfriend. Sorta low on cash so diy things would be awesome. Also, what's something to get him that would be from the heart? We've been together almost 2 years. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A. - Cook him an old-fashioned homemade candlelight dinner at home
- Bake him a heart-shaped cake
- A big heart-shaped box filled with whatever he loves: DVDs, fishing gear, guitar strings and picks, etc
- Cut out 100 hearts of various colors of paper. Stick them up all over his room, office, car, or garage door. Write conversation heart sayings on some of them (like “Be Mine, Luv U, My Guy, and so on.) Or make a racier version.

Christmas gift ideas for a guy returning to Iraq?

Q. Hi, I'm looking for Christmas gift ideas for a guy (we're close friends) who is leaving for Iraq right after the holidays. I was thinking of giving him a digital photo frame. Any other great ideas out there? Thanks!

A. He really can't take too much with him, so you may want to give him some small stuff that he can carry and wait to send him anything big like a digital photo frame in a care package.

My son deployed this past June and he sent everything personal that he owned home with me when he cleared out his room. Anything that he wanted to take with him to Iraq had to be approved by his sgt. before packing. I have gradually sent him a few of his things in care packages. One thing that he really likes to get are games he can play on his laptop (he bought that once he was there, and will send it home before he returns).

Some things that he asked for immediately were a small state flag (we live in Texas), fingernail clippers, disposable razors, batteries and snacks.

If your friend is religious a good gift would be a St. Christopher medal. You could have it blessed. An electric razor is also good. Or an electric toothbrush -- anything small and transportable that helps with personal grooming.

Merry Christmas!

What is a creative gift Idea for my 12-year-old sister?

Q. What's an original gift idea? Like, not an iPod, giftcard, or cellphone? It can be a bunch of items, themed or random, or one bigger item. My budget is 40$ Thanks in advance!

A. 1 - Fashionista girl: Buy a plain tote bag from a craft store (like Hobby Lobby) and decorate it. You can sew/applique some different fabrics (that match, of course) to make a design or just as a color theme. Rhinestones, glitter paint, ribbons, etc. are also great. Awesome gift, and she'll be the only girl wearing it! She can use it to put her school books in or whatever.

2 - Sweet girly girl: Make a photo album/scrapbook with pix of you 2 together, your pets, family, vacations, etc.

3 - Hippie girl: give her a gift that's good for the environment as well, like a basket filled with stuff like organic chocolate, all natural lip balms, recycled jewelry, etc.

Other ideas:
If you know how to crochet or knit, try making her a scarf. (Crocheting is easily learned)

Find a brownie recipe and layer all the dry ingredients in a jar. That way she can just combine that with eggs and milk and she has a yummy treat! (Don't forget to decorate the jar! ;))

And remember:
No matter what kind of girl she is, chocolate is always good! =D

Good luck and happy holidays!

What is a good gift idea for a friend who is starting college?
Q. I'm a guy and i want to get a gift for a girl that i have known for a long time. We are both going to the same college, so i'll see her around, and i just wanted to get her a nice dorm warming gift. Any suggestions?

A. The oracle jar is the ultimate gift, which you can personalize in any way you would like.

What is the best homemade gift idea should I make for my cousins,if it is food related please give the recipe?

Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, water, and soup mix. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover, and simmer for 45 minutes. What is the best gift you have given or received? Looking for ideas for inlaws who have everything!?

Q. Low cost, thoughtful gift ideas please. Thank you!

A. My in-laws have everything also. We ordered food gift baskets for most family members this year, everyone eats right? Try Harry and David or Wine Country Gift Baskets, both are nice, costs range from $20-$100 or more depending on size. Some ar tailored to hobbies, like golfing, gardening..

What kinds of gifts are good for inlaws?
Q. I'm not fond of mine, but I need good ideas for this holiday season coming up. I don't have a lot of money so I usually start now and buy a gift each paycheck so by xmas everyone has something nice. I really am lost this year because we are just cordual with one another and they are not close. I have to do all the shopping since my lazy, careless husband wouldn't even think to give them a card. I wish so much I didn't care.

A. Do they have any hobbies - travel or gardening, etc. You could get them a book that relates to their hobbies - they can both read and enjoy it. When all else fails, there's the good old magic gift certificate. Get one for a nice restaurant so they can have a night out. If you have live theatre near you, you could get them tickets for a show, or tickets for a concert that's coming after the New Year. Even though you don't have much of a relationship with them, the gift is also from their son so it still should be nice and something relevant to their lives.

what's a nice gift to thank future inlaws for a week of skiing?
Q. Had a week of skiing out west- all expenses paid, even airfare. Would like to express my appreciation to my boyfriend's parents. Have done photo albums in the past- any new ideas? I am a college grad student with a hefty loan but do have signifcant savings from a summer job.

A. http://amzn.to/xXjrlv is a thank you coffee and chocolate basket
http://amzn.to/wvkJmn is a "thanks a million gift basket"
http://amzn.to/AdOOKE willow tree thank you wall plaque

What are some ideas for "tropical" decorations for a reception??

Q. We are getting married in Jamiaica and want to bring the fun home at the reception and want to keep it tropical..any ideas on flowers, table decor, anything??

A. I just did a tropical wedding--though we were on a tight budget. I used glads for the table decorations, and hibiscus flowers to place on the buffet, gifts, and favor tables, tied to trees, everywhere!

I wanted it to look like an island so I had the tables in a circular pattern. The outer tables were the buffet tables, the bar table, the gift table, and the table I put the favors on. They were covered in lime green with a darker lush green sheer on top. The middle tables were all a Carib blue/turquoise. The front tables (parents table, sweetheart table, cake table) were all a coral color. I used sand napkins. On the tables I had those flat marbles mixed with river rocks surrounding the arrangement.

For flowers, I only used glads cause they came in all the colors but werent that expensive. Orchids are tropical but really expensive. Birds of paradise flowers and ginger are very tropical though semi-high cost so I used them just in a few places on the head tables. Callalillies also come in "flame tipped" to have yellow and orange. I used a lot of tiki torches in my decorating too. Plus some pictures of island scenes so that when you were standing at the door the whole room seemed very Carib island.

The tiki torches added a nice touch around the tables. For favors I had candles in scents like Mango Daquari, Pina Colada, and Ocean Lagoon. I also kept the theme in my cake with coconut flavored cake with mango icing.

The thing with tropical is to remember the hot colors like fushia and orange and yellow--mixed very evenly with the bright but cool colors of greens and blues. And what looks really bold in the store won't look quite so extreme in the reception with the dim lighting.

Tropical is a gorgeous theme. I had a luau for the rehearsal dinner--they had a roasted pig (called BBQ in the south where I live) and lots of fruit. Especially pineapple (even though thats not very Carib). That would have worked at the reception as well. For Jamaica I'd consider some sugarcane or pictures of sugarcane. And pretty rum bottles to place around as decorations. They have some nice handpainted ones down there that you can get rather cheaply. If you use the rum in your punch, the bottles make great table decor.

How can I lose 20 pounds before december?
Q. I'm going to jamaica for my birthday in december and i need to drop some poundage w/o starvin myself...I'm taking suggestions...

A. Healthy weight loss tips

* Take one pound at a time
Don’t get overwhelmed by how much weight you need to lose. Try to remember that "losing 15 pounds in two weeks" is nothing to celebrate. It is important to realize that the more quickly weight is lost, the more likely the loss is coming from water and muscle, not fat.

Since muscle tissue is critical in keeping our metabolism elevated, losing it actually leads to a decrease in the amount of calories we can each day without gaining weight.

Fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Strive for a weight loss of no more than 3-4 pounds per week. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3500 calories.

* Set Reachable Goals
For instance, if you know you need to get more exercise, begin with a manageable goal of, say, walking 10 minutes a day that you know you can achieve. Then build your self-esteem by achieving the small goals you set yourself.

The same logic applies for losing weight.

* Stay off the scales
Don’t get discouraged when your progress seems to be slow according to your bathroom scales. They do not provide a true measure of what is going on with the body.

If exercise levels are adequate (5-7 days a week), you may be putting on muscle but losing fat, thus losing inches even if you are not losing pounds. It's always a good idea to do several body measurements to have a second objective way to monitor progress.

* Stay focused on being healthy, not thin
# Many people become more successful at long term weight loss when their motive changes from wanting to be thinner to wanting to be healthier. Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body's health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body's weight. The Food Pyramid offers a basic outline of the types and amounts of food you should eat each day to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health.

* Fat Free?
We've known for some time that limiting high fat foods in the diet can be helpful with weight loss. That's because fats pack in 9 calories per gram compared to only 4 calories per gram from proteins or carbohydrates. To many, the message to limit fats implied an endorsement to eat unlimited amounts of fat-free products. Just to clarify, fat-free foods have calories too. In some cases fat-free foods have as many calories as their fat laden counterparts. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you will gain weight. Eating less fat will help you to lose weight. Eating less fat and replacing it with excessive amounts of fat-free products will not.

* Drink plenty of water
Drink eight glasses a day. Water is a natural appetite-suppressant. Nettle tea is a great weight-loss tea as it supports metabolism and has diuretic properties.

* Reward yourself
# Each time you reach a goal, such as losing 5 pounds, reward yourself with a gift or a massage.

* Seek help if you need it
# A big key in long term weight control comes from receiving encouragement and support from others. Find a friend to lose weight with or you can check to see if groups such as Weight Watchers, or eDiets offer programs and resources in your area by clicking the links. You may also wish to check with your local hospital to see if their registered dietician conducts group weight loss programs.

* Watch your portions
With the advent of "supersize" meals and increasingly huge portions at restaurants, our concept of normal serving sizes is a distant memory. Be mindful of the amounts of food you consume at a sitting. When necessary, divide your food in half and ask for a take home bag. It is all too easy to be a "plate cleaner" even when served enormous portions. Learn to pay attention to your hunger level and stop eating when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed.

* Eat your food slowly
Did you ever notice that thin people take an awfully long time to eat their food? Eating slowly is one method that can help take off pounds. That's because from the time you begin eating it takes the brain 20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. Fast eaters often eat beyond their true level of fullness before the 20 minute signal has had a chance to set in. The amount of calories consumed before you begin to feel full can vary significantly depending on how quickly you eat. So slow down, take smaller bites and enjoy your food.

what are some natural resources in british canada?
Q. In British columbia, Newfoundland (labrador) nova scotia, ontario, prince edward island, quebec, saskatchewan, northwest territories, nunavut, and yukon? Im doing a paper @ school, its about the competition of america and canada in the market of imports etc. i need some base info in order to get the job done the way i want, don't think im asking you to do my work for me. I assure U im not.

A. The most valuable product coming from British Columbia (more valuable than all other agriculture production, petroleum & mining activities, and the forestry industried COMBINED!) is what we call "BC Hydro".

Geography permitting generation of abundant hydro-electric power has been a valuable natural BC resource. That's why, to take a conspicuous example, bauxite has been transported (mostly) from Jamaica, in the Caribbean, to Kitimat, on the northern BC coast. (Refining bauxite to make aluminum takes a lot of electricity.)

Another important natural resource in BC is many highly-creative, well-educated people. (I believe that in Nelson, BC. an anniversary memorial has been erected honouring the Draft Dodgers of the 1960-70s. They brought ideas and attitudes that have turned some pretty banal areas into charming communities - which were, until recently, being bought up by 'Merkin pensioners. But I digress ...) Some of them have been gifted geneticists and botanists.

The use of electricity likely to produce the greatest economic return is to power "grow ops". (That's why, for example, at the "Cannabis Cup", held in Amsterdam every year, "BC Hydro" is a good thing.)

As far as competition between countries above and below the "longest undefended border in the world" (which has acquiesced to US "No Fly" orders, and now has bombers belonging to the Untied States flying over without anyone noting it seriously), differences in drug attitudes and policies in the two nations result in very significant economic and social results.

In BC, legal enforcement at all levels has realized that if they tried to put all people who posessed and/or dealt in small quantities of cannabis into jail (as seems to be the case in some parts of the US), they'd have to put the rest of the population to work in "corrections". Although the laws are still on the books, only under unusual circumstances would a person be charged for anything but major operations. Drug enforcement resources have been directed more to heroin, cocaine, and "meth". One very ominous result is that in the US, it costs about as much to buy marijuana as cocaine. In Canada, cannabis is relatively inexpensive. So for the price of half a dozen beer, you have three or four dozy people rummaging in the refrigerator.
I think it would be worth looking at the relative rates of assault, homicide, automobile and other accidents, in relation to the two nations and their drug policies. But again, I digress.

You didn't ask for me to do your homework for you, and (obviously!), I haven't. But I think you got something that I would give an "A" to, as a simple research paper!

Learning is sweet!

What are some creative Easter basket ideas for a 1 year old with NO CANDY?
Q. I'm not putting candy in the Easter basket, he's not going to eat it, I will. He loves the Wiggles, semi likes Handy Manny and Mickey's Clubhouse, and loves being outside and animals.

What are some good filler ideas?

What can I use for a boy instead of a basket?

A. We used a sand bucket and shovel set as the basket. Toddlers (As well as older kids) LOVE this! They can play with it outside instead of tossing it in the trash. We filled their buckets with age appropriate gifts like jump ropes, bubbles, etc.

For a 1 year old I would put coloring books and those fat toddler crayons. Maybe a movie that he'd like. If he has a favorite show, you can pick up a $5 DVD at walmart to put in there. It will get use and give you a couple minutes of sanity lol.

You can also add baby wash (which is something you probably use anyway), and maybe a new stuffed animal if he's into that. I like to go to the dollar store and walmart to do the kiddos baskets. I can find great deals on things. The sand bucket and shovel set was $5 and came with sand toys inside of it.

I hope that helps some. Good luck!

EDITED TO ADD: If you don't trust him with crayons, you can always use color wonders instead. Then he can only draw on special paper. Anywhere he tries to color won't work.

Birthday gift ideas for a 14 year old boy?
Q. My son is turning 14, and he isn't giving out enough ideas for gifts. He has a laptop and an Xbox 360. He plays fighting/shooting games on them. We have 2 dogs, and he plays basketball, rides his bike, and plays on our trampoline. Please! I need ideas!

A. does he have an ipod touch? they're expensive, around two hundred dollars, but if you bought him one with a twenty five dollar gift card and some earphones he'd love you. if you consider this get skullcandy earphones, they're the best. im 14 and everyone has an ipod where i live; i got one last year and it was the best present i've ever gotten besides my ps3 and xbox.

if he doesn't have call of duty: black ops or mw3 you could get him that (though he probably already has it), but ask him if he likes it first. don't waste your money. another good game is assassin's creed 3 and elder scrolls: skyrim on xbox 360. this is my personal opinion but don't get mass effect 3 (a game that came out recently). the endings are terrible. dragonage 1 is a good game, but dragonage 2 is pretty bad. the whole entire time i tried to convince myself that its a good game like the previous but i just couldnt

anyways... i also have a dirtbike and longboard. those are mad fun, but dirtbikes are also like two hundred bucks. if he likes bikes consider a dirtbike or ask him about it

does he have a steam account (Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation (o yea i just copied that right off wikipedia i got swag))? if he does get him a vanilla card and let him buy games on there. i just got metro 2033 and total war on pc and theyre awesome.

if he has a favorite basketball player or something, you could buy a fathead for your son (could be about 100 dollars). thatd be pretty funny if i woke up to a life size michael jordan or on my wall lol id be like damn when did that get there

if he has a favorite book series... check which ones he has and get him the next one. though maybe hes not really into books.

lastly... no kid would mind if u just gave him 100 bucks or a vanilla gift card with 100 bucks on it. that way he could buy anything on like, amazon or something he likes. it gives him choice, so its a great present.

oh, i forgot. if he likes southpark, or family guy, dvd sets are good. just anything of his favorite tv show. southpark ftw

good luck dude, im sure whatever u pick will be good mamacita

Where or how did the author of goldilocks come up with his ideas?

Q. Ideas for associating hot and cold with men and women, respectively? According to the book Men are from Mars and women are from Venus, it would seem logical to associate cold with man since Mars is a very cold planet and hot with woman since Venus is very hot.
P.s I don't want to read any smart alekey responses such as the story of Goldilocks was written waay before the book Men from Mars Women from Venus.

A. The earliest recorded version of the tale is found in a collection of early children's books in the Toronto Public Library. This is a homemade book titled, The Story of The Three Bears. Eleanor Mure wrote and illustrated the story as a gift for her four-year-old nephew in 1831 from a story she already knew through oral tradition.

Origins of the story below.

what should i get my science teacher for an end of the year gift?

Q. I really need gift ideas for my favorite teacher for an end of the year to show her how much i appreciate her, any gift ideas?

by the way shes really girly and loves purple and polka dots!

A. I myself think that finding the right gift can sometimes be difficult. What I think is
that people tend to like unique gifts that are hard to find and not sold in stores. People like the gifts more this way since they cannot be replaced. I have been buying a few items from http://www.thinkfuntoys.com and giving it away to friends and family. They all love it. The stuff there are pretty cheap and unique and they deliver fast.

Whats a good gift for teachers at the end of the year?
Q. My son is in Kindergarden and I want to know of some good gift ideas on what to get his teacher/teachers as end of year gifts. Any ideas??

Thanks so much!

A. I think your son should make something crafty for her teacher, and you can assist your son making it. :)

What is a unique gift to give a third grade teacher for an end of the school year present?
Q. I have been a parent volunteer since my oldest started kindergarten in 1984 and have helped with numerous end of the school year parties. My youngest is in 3rd grade and I think my creativity has taken a leave of absence (or just too tired). I am just not coming up with any ideas for a teacher present this year. What are some good teacher gifts that you can think of? Some of the things I have done in the past are gift certificates to restaurants, teacher stores, sporting events, book stores; fabric painted sweatshirts, tote bags, aprons with kids' names and handprints; flowers, plants, and trees; one year I did a summer survival kit with sunscreen, a book, a sun hat, etc, in a styrafoam cooler. All of these are thoughtful gifts and appreciated by teachers. Does anyone have other suggestions for truly unique gift ideas? Thanks!

A. I am a teacher and by far the nicest suggestion is a book with notes from the kids. You have certainly given wonderful presents in the past too. But no one can ever give the gift of real appreciation. I have many mugs, t-shirts, plants etc but the gifts I treasure and that I take out when I need a lift are notes from my students and a well worn little book given to me by a class over 22 years ago. I love all my gifts and feel grateful that people have taken time to select and give a gift when we are all so busy so I am sure anything would be fine...but a little book of notes from the kids...a priceless jewel!

Its my great grandfathers birthday on the 19th and i want to make him a homemade gift any ideas?

Q. i want to make his 80th birthday special he is going threw alot....his son (my grandpa) just found out he has cancer and his wife (my great grandma) legs are like huge and see really cant walk cause their infected so any ideas?

A. You could make him a pillowcase, so he can rest from his worries. Get cute fabric that he would like, or else get a ready made pillowcase and iron on some photos, or use fabric paint to decorate it. You can print photos off of your computer on iron-on fabric. It's really very easy, and it would be homemade, with love, and mean a lot to him.

What's a better gift for my Grandma: edible panties or flavored condoms?
Q. Her 80th Birthday is right around the corner and I'm just not sure what she'd enjoy more. Ideas?

A. Give her both. ;D

What is the best gift for a boyfriend?
Q. ok so i need to get my boyfriend a birthday gift, and he has way more than enough clothing, sneakers, and jewelry. He's really not into the
iPod and those other music players, so i'm really out of ideas... I'm already taking him out to eat, and surprising him with a birthday cake and card. But i also want to give him a gift...so let me know any ideas!

Oh by the way we've known each other for almost 4yrs, but have been dating for about 2yr now. just in case you needed to know.

A. Overstock.com sells brand-name stuff at seriously discounted prices like ~80% off and they everything for only $2.95. I have been using it to buy gifts or just get ideas for many years now.

Some of the stuff I grabbed from their site that they have includes:
bed-and-bath, home decor, furniture, handmade goods, kitchenware, watches, jewelry, computers and electronics, sporting goods, apparel and designer accessories, books, magazines, CD's, DVD's, videocassettes and video games

The deal below gets you some $$$ off if you spend more than $100 bucks.

Hope this is helpful.

This is an idea for kids to make, but can be used by adults as well:
http://www.education.com/activity/article/Love_and_Kisses_Valentines_Day/

Laminate a photo of the two of you, made into a bookmark - so it can be a few small pics or just one, glue it to construction paper with hearts, then hole punch the top and put a ribbon of some kind through the hole and tie it off.

Make cookies:
Quick Banana Chocolate Chip Bars
1 Medium Ripe Banana, peeled
1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
¾ Cup Brown Sugar, packed
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
½ Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
¼ Teaspoon Salt
1/3 Cup Olive or Vegetable Oil
2 Tablespoons Milk
1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 Egg
¼ Cup Chopped Nuts
½ Cup Chocolate Chips (or what feels good)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray small rectangular or 9x9 square baking pan with non-stick spray.

Chop or mash banana. Combine with flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, oil, milk, vanilla and egg in large bowl. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips to this mixture OR save them to add as topping, sprinkling on top of mixture after poured into the pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Isabellas (Oatmeal Cookies)

1 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups oats
Dash salt, optional
Powdered Sugar

Cream butter and sugar until light. Mix in vanilla, then flour, oats and salt. Chill thoroughly. Shape into small balls and place 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten with a fork, crisscrossing. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-18 minutes (depending on your oven). Sprinkle with Powdered Sugar

what did you receive for your own OR give for your parents 60th birthday?

Q. Its a special day and a special gift is in order. I need good ideas for my father!

A. I have kids who live across the US. A couple live near me, but the other 3 live far away. For my 60th birthday, they all got some time off and came here to visit for a few days over my birthday. It was really great, because while I see them off and on, it had been years since I got to see them (& their families) all together again.

That was the best birthday they could have given me.

Can anyone give me ideas for a birthday gift for a 60 yr old woman?
Q. She is single, no children, great person. She's semi spiritual and loves theater, dinning out. Young at heart! Beautiful lady and a good friend of mine who I have worked with for 13 yrs.

A. Invite her to join you for a night out dinner and go to the theater.

Give her an experience:
Cooking class
Art class
Hot Air balloon ride

Think is she ever mentions "I love going to that place" or "I have always thought about going ... but didn't want to go alone"

Then see about making it happen.
I found more ideas here - maybe one will work for you.

What are some good birthday party ideas for a 14 year old girl?
Q. Ok, I am 13 years old and I am turning 14 in October. (so as you can see, no pool party's) I am planning on having a HUGE birthday party with around 60 people. I have no idea what to do. Something fun, maybe outside, i don't know! any ideas????

A. Happy Birthday a little early - October could be a good time for a outdoor bonfire party. Or maybe a big camp out in your backyard :) Check out these awesome camping glow-in-the-dark T-shirts at www.imagnTEE.com, they would be a great "party gift" and would be a lot of fun to see everyone glow at night! And yes you can get long sleeves, since it could be a little chilly out.

Can you give me suggestions for a good birthday gift for a 4 year old girl. I want the gift to be one that her parents will be glad I gave her in addition to one that she will like.

Thanks!

A. Coloring stuff (washable markers)

baby doll or Barbie

Hope that helps! My daughter is 4 and these r things she asked 4 4 her b'day!

Birthday Gift Ideas for a 4 year old girl?
Q. My friend and I whom we knew since elementary school, currently live in different states. We communicate often via email and her daughter's birthday is coming up soon, she will be 4 years old on Sept. 27. What kind of gift ideas for a 4 year old girl that would be useful and doesn't cost alot in shipping? I want to give something besides dolls. I plan on mailing the gift with homemade jam :-)

A. I would just give her a gift card to Toys R Us. She will most likely be getting gifts from relatives and friends (especially if her parents have a party for her) and you have no idea what she'll get. Maybe she won't get the one thing she really hoped she would or maybe she'll get duplicates of something. I would get her a gift card and a nice card. If you want to get her something small to open to go along with it, that would be nice too.

I know people frown on giving gift cards, but I don't know a single person who doesn't like getting them!

A. 1) Books - ask for recommendations at the bookstore or try to remember what you read as a child. Kids at that age are getting ready to understand slightly more complex stories, but still love pictures. "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" is a favorite of mine.

2) Craft items -- stamp sets, stickers, coloring books, paints. (although your friend might be irritated if your paints are to messy. :)

3) Dress up items -- what kid doesn't like make believe?

Gift ideas for my wife for Christmas?

Q. I need some gift ideas for my wife for Christmas. Not jewelry though. She is hard to buy for.

A. what is she into- give us a little more to go off of please.

What is a fun christmas gift for a couple that just had a baby?
Q. My brother and his wife had their first baby a few months ago, any gift ideas? I already got stuff for the baby, but wanted to get them something, and I don't know what to get them!

A. You could make them a basket of things needed for a movie night in. Some new parents aren't comfortable leaving their child for awhile. So make a basket of a couple newly released dvds or gift voucher for a free rental, some packs of popcorn and maybe some candy.

If not, I agree with eveyone who said a voucher to babysit while they go out.

What is a good gift idea to send my deployed husband for our 2 year Anniversary?
Q. What is a unique or thoughfull gift idea to send my husband for our 2 year wedding anniversary? It is on July 1st. I want it to be special. He is in IRAQ.

A. I think the ladies have said it best; send him a pillowcase from home with you perfme in it, a sexy something that you wear often, also with your favorite perfume, add to that a long letter describing how much you love him and how you yearn for his warm embrace (okay, I'm getting tacky now) :D.

Then send him pictures of you, the kids (if you have kids), family, home and things you all like to do together. That would bring him closer to home.

And please ignore the political comments; posting stupid stuff is not a crime yet. GOd bless your husband and you for being such a noble military wife.

Would you let your kids read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?

Q. I've heard that some schools won't let the students read Huckleberry Finn at all, only with permission, or edited because of the content. That is how it was back then and children need to learn about that time period.

A. Of course.

All mine did.

This banning stuff because of content is nonsense. Of course, they need to know how things were - doesn't mean they have to be it, do it or repeat it.

And how can one teach children about slavery and civil rights and how all that came about if they don't know the beginnings.

And besides the book is not all about blacks and slavery. It's about being a boy in the 1840s. Which is a lot different than being a boy now.

And what's with banning HF but being ok with Twilight and Hunger Games. HF is bad but being a teenage vampire, having a werewolf baby and running for your life to not be killed is ok?

Seriously?

There is a quote - I don't remember it exactly - something about "Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it".

Sanitizing everything to meet today's standards is not the answer.

And shame on that woman who re-wrote "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to get the pipe out of Santa's mouth. Sure, smoking is bad - but education is the answer to smoking. Not sanitizing Santa because he is doing what was accepted in the day the poem was written. Apparently the lollipops and gumdrops are ok. She isn't worried about all the sugar making children obese and diabetic. Apparently the idea of some dude dressed funny - coming into the house when everyone is sleeping and leaving gifts and candy for little children is ok. Actually when one thinks about it - it sound perverted, doesn't it?

Schools may be be banning it - and it's a good thing I don't have kids in school any more - or they would have one very irate parent attending meetings.

But you can do what you want in your own home.

Yes, if it was banned in school - I would let child read it at home. Or read it with child.

How does one learn anything if everything is banned and sanitized?

Censorship of any kind annoys the snot out of me. How dare anyone tell me what I can or cannot read. How dare anyone rewrite a classic Christmas poem because of personal preference. I'm old enough to decide if Santa with a pipe in his mouth is going to make me decide to smoke or not. And I'm confident that children are not going to focus on that one thing - and run out and buy pipes. I would find it very amusing if this woman's own kids were out behind the garage smoking weed on a regular basis.

Next - they will be editing history books to get WW11 out. Delete all the Holocaust stuff. Too scary.

The thing is - yes, we need to educate and protect our children. However, life does not come bubble wrapped and they need all the information they can get to get on in life.

And that - basically - includes reading Huckleberry Finn. And other things written prior to 2012.

What are some unusual, uncommon, yet thoughtful arguments against same-sex marriage?
Q. I am writing my high school senior thesis on why there is no reason same-sex should be illegal. I've covered all the typical, common arguments against it in my antithesis, but I know there are a lot more out there that I would like to include. Thank you.

A. Liberals mock Republicans for claiming that we are on a moral "Slippery Slope," but let’s look at the facts.

Not long ago gays proclaimed: “It’s none of your business what I do in the bedroom! Why can't Republicans mind their own business?” But their gay “lifestyle” somehow left the bedroom and is today being taught to school children...as an “alternate lifestyle.”

Then “the slope” steepened:

-8/18/12 foxnews.com: California law barring parents from 'curing' gay children moves through legislature.

French gays have an even better idea:
-10/11/12 http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012: Legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage and give homosexual couples the right to adopt children also would replace the terms “mother” and “father” with “parent 1” and “parent 2” in all legal documents, including birth certificates.

But why stop at “gay rights”?

-11/2/12 http://www.campusreform.org/blog/?ID=448… Evergreen State College in Washington State: A public school’s ‘non-discrimination policy’ allows Colleen Francis, a biological male who identifies as a woman, to use the women’s locker room and restrooms. According to the police report obtained by Campus Reform, the transgendered man in question, 45-year-old student Colleen Francis, was “sitting with her legs open with her male genitalia showing” with girls as young as six years old present.

-8/13/12 theblaze.com: Democrat Mary Gonzalez was the first lesbian to openly serve in the Texas House of Representatives, and now she’s becoming the first “pansexual,” too.
As Gonzalez defines it, apparently a “pansexual” is attracted to men, women, men who identify as women, women who identify as men, and everything in between....”

What’s next? Incest?

Woody Allen had an affair with his daughter-in-law. Morgan Freeman had an affair with his granddaughter-in-law.

How long will it be before Hollywood gifts us with a movie about this couple?
11/6/12 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-557600/Father-daughter-baby-30-year-separation.html:
-A father and daughter confessed on television last night to spending seven years in a sexual relationship and conceiving two children.
-"John and I are in this relationship as consenting adults," Jenny told Australia's 60 Minutes programme last night.
-"We are just asking for a little bit of respect and understanding."

In a recent episode of the History Channel’s miniseries “Midwife” an elderly brother and sister lived together incestuously for decades. When the two died in each other’s arms -- he of cancer, she of suicide -- the head nun (yes, a nun) who supervised their last days eulogized: “It’s not who you love that’s important, it’s love itself that defines human beings.” It was a real tear jerker...yes, sir.

Oh, look! Here’s another lifestyle!

-2/26/12 http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2012/02/26/bc-vancouver-bestiality.html CBC News, Canada: A Vancouver man is set to go to trial for bestiality, a charge that is rarely prosecuted in the courts. The SPCA alleges it has seized video of Brian Cutteridge, 38, engaged in sexual acts with his dog. Cutteridge has argued openly against bestiality laws and has written extensively about sexual relationships with animals. Two years ago he published a paper called For the Love of Dog: On the Legal Prohibition of Zoophilia in Canada and the United States. "He feels very strongly that that should be something that's legal," Moriarty said. "He feels those relationship with his dogs are equivalent to a marriage-type relationship...”

And another!
-1/3/13 http://m.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jan/03/paedophilia-bringing-dark-desires-light:
“But there is a growing conviction, notably in Canada, that paedophilia should probably be classified as a distinct sexual orientation, like heterosexuality or homosexuality.”
-----------
“nihilism” defined:
-A doctrine holding that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated.
-The belief that destruction of existing political or social institutions is necessary for future improvement.
------
Footnote: Should gay couples have the same legal status as hetero couples? Absolutely, and they have those rights in most states. In fact, they have rights superior to us due to their federal minority status. They get quotas just like racial minorities. But that’s still not enough! Now they want to change the definition of marriage from a union of man and woman, a tradition embraced by all cultures, world wide, since written history. Man, you talk about in-your-face!
------
How did we get here?

It all started 20 years ago with: “It’s none of your business what I do in the bedroom! Why don’t you Republicans mind your own business?”

I think I have the spiritual gift of prophecy?
Q. Please help, I just turned fourteen today and I'm really scared. I know God is calling me for this. How can I grow in it?
I don't need to prove anything. I've gotten some small visions about my life and they've come true. Wouldn't you be scared?

A. Trust in God, who raises the dead. I recommend spending time with Him in prayer and devotion, and follow the lead of the Holy Spirit at work in your life. Naturally, you're bound to face objection to women in ministry. Your call may or may not be to lead a congregation. For example, you may be called to lead women and/or children. I have no idea what God's plan and purpose are for you, and only the Lord can answer that for you. Nevertheless, you may find this article to be of interest:

A case for women in ministry
http://www.jameswatkins.com/womeninministry.htm

The author references John Wesley who was an Anglican priest and founder of the Methodist movement. From the Methodist movement grew what is not the United Methodist Church (and other churches), and the United Methodist Church is one denomination that ordains women clergy.

Peace be with you.

What to gift my wife at first Valentines' Day after marriage?

Q. What to gift my wife at first Valentines' Day after marriage?

I am looking for gift ideas (preferably non-conventional) for my girl friend cum wife...

A. You answered mine, figured I'd help you out too!

Jewelery is always a big bonus, and you don't have to spend more than $50 on something. When a man buys a woman something that is beautiful, it lets us know that when they picked it out, they saw it being as beautiful as us. Very special.

Flower are always a great thing.
Or when you cook for us.
A massage even.

Something I'm kinda wishing for, more or less for our 1 year in a few months...
My husband and I are using his parents engagement rings... well their relationship isnt working out... so a new and our OWN wedding set would be amazing... even if its fairly small and cheap.

If you have a similar situation, that would be great, or even see if you can take your wife;s ring, and get it engraved with something special.
My husband and I, always say "I love you forever and always..." and when we get our new set, we plan to have Forever & Always on both of our rings inside. Of course this is just Valentines Day, guess that would be more of an anniversary gift. But it's an idea if you guys have your own little saying.

Hope I helped! Glad you answered my question as well. It helped so much, so thank you.

What are good Valentines ideas for a teenage boy?
Q. I'm trying to think of what to do for my boyfriend for Valentine's day. We're close friends as well as a couple. He's a really loving, thoughtful and respectful person. I want to do something special for him, not really expensive but something that will make him feel loved. It can be a gesture, a present, or anything really. As many ideas as possible would be great. Also, please don't say anything sexual. Thanks in advance for the ideas. :)

What should I get my girlfriend for Valentine's Day?
Q. I am 13 and I need a gift idea for my girlfriend vor Valentine's Day. I want it to be something she'll like, like chocolates but I don't know. I don't want to go too small or over the top. Please help.

A. Firstly remember that she'll probably be so thrilled that you thought of her and took the time to get her a gift that she'll love it, no matter what. Boys sometimes don't care about these things and that's always saddening!

But of course you want to get her something good as well so think about what her interests are and what tastes she has in movies and stuff. A DVD box set of her favourite TV series will always be awesome. If she loves a particular flavour of food, e.g. cherry, find her a few different delicious foods that feature cherry (like cherry and coconut cookies, chocolate covered cherries, a bottle of cherry coke) and present them to her together nicely like a little gift box. Or say she likes cinnamon, then cinnamon dusted chocolates, a jar of cinnamon honey, etc. Girls usually like chocolate so if you find some special ones, they would be great. I'm thinking of amazing white chocolate honeycomb delights or something.

Oh and don't forget that girls appreciate cards or at least a little gift tag so she can see your name with some kisses after it. For some reason, seeing something your boyfriend has written is so just cute. His handwriting could be terrible and it still makes you think how adorable he is...

What gift should I bring my Japanese friend?

Q. It should also be noted that I'm interested in starting a relationship with her, if that changes your ideas for a gift. She's from Tokyo and is coming to NYC for a few weeks to study. I'm from Florida. What sort of thing should I bring her, is there anything specific that the Japanese like as gifts?
...Yeah, I don't think bringing sushi to a Japanese friend would be the best idea.

A. People always ask stuff like this and I always think that they are putting too much emphasis on "Japanese". Have you ever given a girl a gift before? What did you give? Notice how I said "girl" and not "English girl", "Korean girl", "Russian girl", "Spanish girl" or anything like that? Ethnicity does not make a girl super unique. It is not possible to generalize an entire ethnicity and say "oh, so she is Japanese. You should give her Hello Kitty merchandise.". By generalizing her, you have already made your first mistake and probably won't do well if you plan on starting a relationship.
That being said, how could random strangers on Yahoo possibly know a better idea for a gift than what you can think of? You obviously know her better than any of us. What kind of things does she like? What are her interests? Sure, I could give some half-assed suggestions that most girls would like, like saying "a box of chocolate", but do you really want such a dull idea? You say you are from Florida, right? How about something that is famous from your area? Hey, Disney World is in Florida. Does she like something Disney? How about a stuffed alligator? These are the only kinds of suggestions I can give for someone I don't know anything about.

What is an appropriate thank you gift for someone who let me stay in their apartment in New York City?
Q. I traveled from out of town to spend two days in New York City. The lady and her cousin were friends of a friend and they let me use their apartment as home base and showed me around the town a bit. I'd like to show my appreciation. I already bought them lunch but thought a card and a gift would be in order as well.

A. A gift or gift card is a good idea. If you are going to get a gift card, make sure the store is close to them. As you know, most of us NYC folks don't own cars. If they live in Manhattan, having to truck out to Brooklyn to use the gift card may be more trouble than it is worth. An Amazon gift card is a good choice.

What would be a fun gift is local goodies from your hometown. Is there anything special that they may not be able to get easily here that you can get at home? I'm thinking something like See's chocolates if they are sweet eaters.

Something consumable is better than something that will take up space.

Also be sure to write them a thank you note. Tell them what you thought was extra special about your trip. Share a favorite memory. Gifts come and go, but they seem like caring people, knowing that they were able to show you a great time will make them happy.

What are some really unique things to do when visiting NYC?
Q. I'm visiting with a friend in early May. I'm into photography but she's not. We are both women turning 40 -- but we would love to go out and have fun and do interesting stuff. Anybody got any ideas? I'm looking for something other than the standard touristy stuff (statue of liberty, churches, shows, etc...).
We are staying at the W Hotel in Union Square.

A. All these folks seem to be reading the same guide book. Spare me. Zzz-zzz.

You say you're looking for a New York adventure outside the standard tourist routes. Staying at the W in Union Square is a great start. Let's do this geographically and move outward from your home base. We'll hit restaurants, museums, photo ops as we come across them....

While Union Square is now a very popular tourist destination, it was until recently a place all New Yorkers avoided btw. Your hotel is a block west of Gramercy Park (only residents have a key) and from 18th Street south to 14th you'll find Irving Place - one of New York's hidden treasures. If you're a literature buff, be sure to stop in at Pete's Tavern at Irving and 18th - a favorite haunt of O. Henry (yes, "The Gift of the Magi").

Not far from your hotel, there are a handful of wonderful restaurants you absolutely must visit. Two blocks up Park Avenue South at 20th Street you'll find Gramercy Tavern - one of the single best restaurants in New York (a Danny Meyer jewel and one of my personal favorites). Futher west on 18th (15 W18th to be exact) you'll find Tarallucci a wonderful Italian wine bar while a bit further west and south on 6th Avenue and 13th Street you'll find Bar 6 a lovely French bistro (you'll never be bored at mealtime in New York). If you're in a mood to walk I stronlgy recommend an afternoon stop at McSorley's the oldest public house in New York, operating continuously since 1854 - men only until 1975 when they finally allowed women to drink in there. (If you want a real taste of old New York I also suggest reading "Up in the Old Hotel" by Joseph Mitchell).

Now, if you're looking for interesting photo ops, you can grab the L train at Union Square and take it to Bedford Street, the first stop in Brooklyn. Williamsburg may now be full of hipster doofuses and yuppies, but it still retains its very gritty and industrial look which you may find interesting, You'll also find Peter Luger's here, New York's oldest and least pretentious steak house (be warned, it ain't cheap and it's cash only, but it's a helluva good time). Further south by taking the B63 (or B61) bus I can't remember exactly which, but you can grab a bus map at any subway station, you'll find DUMBO which used to be very gritty, but is now an up and coming yuppie neighborhood (they all are sadly). The cobblestone streets and industrial buildings will look very familiar and make for some wonderful photos. There are even old rails still embedded in the streets.

A short walk south and you'll find Brooklyn Heights - an oasis of tree-lined brownstones and The Promenade offering the best view of lower Manhattan you'll ever find. And (I'm giving you an insider's secret here) at Henry Street and Middagh Street right by the Brooklyn Bridge, you'll find Noodle Pudding - a little northern Italian place that's a very popular neighborhood favorite. (There's a big window, but no sign).

From here, if you're feeling adventurous, you can ggrab the F train out to Coney Island and photograph to your heart's content. Take the train back into Mahattan and take it all the way to 52d Street. Get off and enjoy Bryant Park, one of the city's magnificent and unsung jewels. The buildings around the park are almost as enticing as the park itself. Not far away you'll find all the usual tourist suspects, but if you're still looking for interesting destinations, venture north to the Bronx where you'll find bother Fordham Road and Fordham University (both great photo ops) as well as the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Gardens (both good photo ops off the beaten path).

My last bit of advice would be to track down the places Mitchell mentions in "Up in the Old Hotel" and see how things have changed.

Enjoy your trip!

What are some good recipes for homemade Christmas gifts?

Q. I am already planning on making fudge, and toffee but would like some more candy or dessert ideas
I am also looking for some gift jar ideas/recipes. I already plan on one for chocolate chip cookies and homemade hot cocoa. I would really like a good recipe for a blueberry muffin one if you know of any.

I have a large family and want to give each of the adults (24) a gift somewhere along these lines, but I don't want to make all the same things so any ideas?

A. Flavored sugar is a great 'gift jar' gift. I used a spice mill to grind dried lemon, orange, lime peel (separately) and added them to sugar with a drop of food coloring shaken in for effect. I also buy a bag or two of sugar every January and go to the whole foods store and buy vanilla beans (they are cheaper). I make a slit down the middle lengthwise (careful not to go all the way through to the other side) then I place a bunch of these beans in an airtight jar with the sugar and leave it alone until Christmas. Then I put it in jars and give out. The lime sugar and the vanilla sugar seem to be the most appreciated. Especially by tea drinkers and bakers.

You can also take last years fruitcake (you know it lasts forever) and crumble it up. Then, dip your hands in a little water or flavored liqueur and roll into small balls and place in a pan to dry overnight. Then melt some choc chips in the microwave (one bag choc chips and 1 teaspoon Crisco for shine) dip balls and place on wax paper til chocolate sets. This recipe makes fruitcake lovers out of anyone who loves chocolate (esp. the dark chocolate).

what kind of gift jars can i give using cereal?
Q. id like to make gift jars for my family this christmas and i have a ton of rice krispies, kix and cornflakes that i would like to use in the jars somehow. thanks for any ideas !

A. A twist on this is to make a savory crispy chicken coating using cornflakes, kind of like homemade super yummy shake n bake. I'm sure you could find a recipe on line.

If you do the sweet cereal bars, I would pack the marshmallows separate, since that's the way those recipes cook up.

I admire your resourcefulness!

Cool, unique gift ideas for friend who is expecting baby boy?

Q. I don't wanna go the usual baby Gap route, I like how Angelina dresses her kids, trendy but cute. Also looking for any additional DIY things I can make for the baby shower.

A. I think you should make a really cool personalized "Baby Book". Normal baby books from Target/Babies r Us are all exactly the same, and they are all pretty average. There are pages that never get filled out, things you want to put into the book but can't seem to find the right page...etc. Here's what I did for a friend's shower and she LOVED it.

Take a 3 ring binder and decorate it any way you choose. Then get baseball card page protectors, regular page protectors, photo page protectors..etc....get her some construction paper and a stack of index cards. Then you can cut the index cards in half and write down anything you want and just slide it in the baseball card sized page protectors. It's SO easy to forget the little things and when it's so easy to grab an index card and jot the memory down there's no excuse!

I am planning on making those for all future shower gifts b/c it was such a big hit. The new parents can write down little things like the first words, the first time they slept through the night, the first time you got a real smile, laugh..etc... and it's really cool.

Good luck though, there are lots of other good ideas too!!

I could use some ideas of fun and useful gift ideas for a bridal shower gift?
Q. I am the maid of honor of my best friends wedding. I am already spending a lot of money to throw her a bridal shower and buying what I need to wear for her wedding. So I thought It would be a cute idea to make a gift basket or like a picnic basket type of thing to give to her as my gift to her. I was wondering what would be some cool and also useful ideas to put in the basic. If anyone else has a better idea for a gift please share!

A. When my brother got married, they had a lot of kitchen items on their registry, in all price ranges. A neighbor who was invited to the wedding bought a bunch of the smaller items (wisks, ladles, spatulas, measuring cups, etc) and put them all in a basket and attached little cards with recipies on them to each of the items. My brother and his wife loved it because they love to cook, and are ALWAYS trying out new foods and things.

So my suggestion would be to think of things that the couple like to do together, and fill the basket with stuff that will help them enjoy that. So if they like camping, find small pieces of camping equipment like those wind up flashlights that don't need batteries, and bug spray and stuff like that. Or if they love the beach/are going somewhere beachy on their honeymoon, get them sunscreen and flip flops and beach towels...if they like doing gardening, get them a bunch of small gardening tools and seeds that will do well in your area...if they like doing home improvement/diy projects, get them paint brushes and things to hang paintings and stuff in their home....

Think of who they are as a couple, and what they like to do, then personalize it to their tastes.

My fiance and I are planning to be married in October. Does anyone have any thrifty ideas?
Q. We're kind of tight on cash. I'm looking for suggestions and ideas to pull off something nice but very reasonably priced. DIY ideas welcome as well!! Thanks!

A. I got married last December and did a lot of it on a budget as we were paying for it. I know that because I live in the UK how we have weddings over here may be in some way different to in the US or Australia but the principals are probably the same :)
first of all make a list of the 'must haves' - the things you have to have to make it your day; you want to do it as cheap as possible but you also dont want to look back in the future and think 'I wish we'd had....' as you can't go back and re-do it. that said, don't lose sight of what the day is about - you and your partner making a life-long commitment in front of family and friends.
For starters, we made out own invitations - buying the card, paper and decorations from ebay and online craft stores. i am not a 'crafty' person but with some practice had made something no one else would have. I got some plain card, printed the inserts on the home computer on paper sheerts and attached them using silver cord that i tied in a bow, with silver beads threaded on to the cord. Glued some red hearts and stamped the wording on the front and voila... enlist the help of friends and your partner and you're set ;) I bought the place cards online and hand wrote them with silver pen - but some people let people sit wherever so you dont need place cards and I didnt bother with a seating chart. i made the favours, buying bits from ebay, including the sweets to go inside. I also made small table gifts, which were fun 'toys' I got from ebay and wrapped in silver paper then got my sister and nice (bridesmaids) to give them out when they were seated, as an ice breaker - it was Christmas season so it seemed apt and people loved them.
My dress was a bridesmaids dress, cos I wanted a simple strapless red gown and the one I chose was just right. It wasnt second hand, it was off the peg but the shop took it in to fit me and I loved it. My hubbie got his suit and his brothers best man suit from an outlet, so that was cheaper. My tiara was from ebay, as was my bag and I bought gorgeous artificial cala lilly bouquet from ebay - bonus being I get to keep it forever - no bouquet tossing for me! :P
We had our wedding in the afternoon, straight away cutting costs for everyone, and chose a venue we could hire for free - they recoup their costs through the bar bill, food etc. I invited only family and very close friends to the wedding breakfast and went for the menu that would suit most tastes - no one will remember if you had fancy nibbles or if they had a fancy plate of something unprounounceable... they will remember if it was edible and thats about it :P
I had one free drink for each of the wedding breakfast and included in the budget wine to go with the meals, but for the toast gave the guests sparkling chardonnay and only had champagne for the top table - no one noticed the difference. I didnt have an open bar and no one expected it - its an unneccesary expense and weddings cost enough as it is, plus its not a tradition over in the UK.
I had a DJ quite cheap through the venue but the ipod idea is great and make your own cd to be played while you eat. The crockery and glasses and stuff came from the venue.
I negotiated with the venue re table decorations but i would say you dont need to go OTT with those and can make your own - no one will remember them and a couple of fish bowls with bear grass and gerberas looked really effective - in the evening they were put on the bar with tea light candles in, which are super cheap to buy from Ikea.
My photographer and I negotiated too, and I settled on a DVD only deal, which means I get all the pictures and can print out what i want when i want. I limited his time with us as luckily our venue had an in-house photogrpaher who took pictures of the evening guests, as I think its great to have pics of everyone there - but you can aks guests to give you copies of theres and may be worth putting blank recordable discs on the tables with little cards inviting people to take them home and out their pics on their then send them back to you - people really dont mind.
The cake I found via the internet - a lot of it was done over the internet because I was being married miles from where I live - but shop bought cakes can be as good and you can buy decorations to go on there from most supermarkets. I didnt have a videographer as I am camera shy but thats personal preference - i did consider hiring or borrowing a camera and asking a friend to do it.
I didnt go crazy on a honeymoon - we had a 'mini moon', which was cheaper and closer to home but no less special.
i think that covers most things.. theres also a site called 'myweddingpath' which lets you build your own pages for free, really easy to use and is a handy way for people to RSVP, get involved with the planning etc.
Good luck and have a great great day :)
