Christmas Gift List....?

Olivia

Hello People,
Christmas is on it's way, and I'm getting into the spirit a bit early...
I need to get everyone gifts, of course, but I don't know what, and no one will give me a straight answer.
Could you guess what they would want based on these descriptions, please?
Brother: 9 years old, loves everything technological, bought his own ipad, flatscreen tv, google tv, ipod, psvita, etc...
Stepmother-33, loves gardening and movies
Dad-44, loves everything technological, movies, and cooking. I was thinking of getting him slippers, but he just got a pair...
Mom-46, realtor, always grumpy, loves reading the news...
Cousin-boy, 14, loves video games, tennis, biking, and technology...
Cousin-boy, 14 (they're twins), loves video games, tennis, biking, and a spy tv show...(it's called Nikita, if you know what that is.)
Aunt-49, loves dogs, jewlery making, gardening...
Uncle, 50 (i think), loves sports and cooking...
Aunt, 48, editor for the denver post, loves long walks, and her dogs
Uncle, 50 (i think), loves biking, handyman work, works as an english teacher at a highhschool...
Grandma, 87, pack rat. loves dogs...
Grandpa, 85, recently diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, (this is very likely my last christmas :-( with him ever), he loves to do things. literally, he walks everywhere, built his own boat, put a solar roof on his house, etc...I want to get him something amazing, but i don't have any ideas...a simple idea could help me come up with something.
Grandma, 79, lives in portugal, makes her own jam, very good at bruising herself accidentally, has tons of fruit bushes...
Me- I don't really know what I want, but an idea for the list would be great. I'm 14, Have 4 dogs, love art, dance, and music, love to read (harry potter is my FAVORITE!!), i'm going to be an architect and/or lawyer when I grow up and want to go to harvard...

An idea or two for each person would be awesome!! I'll answer your questions if you link to them :-)
please give serious and thought out answers.
Thank You!!!!
<3,
OB

Christmas gift exchange game ideas?

m_lvb18

My extended family instead of drawing names and buying presents for them, we've decided to do a game and girls buy a girl gift and guys buy a guy gift. We need an idea for a game to play to exchange. we'd also like to be able to steal gifts.

Answer
We do a gift exchange grab bag thing. Basically all the presents are in a big pile...you could seperate these out into boy pile and girl piles. Then we draw numbers. Person 1 goes and picks out a gift and opens it. Person 2 can either steal Person 1's gift that they just opened or grab a new present to open. It goes on like that until the last person has opened a gift. We also have rules that the 3rd owner of a gift is the final owner. That sometimes comes into play if there is a REALLY popular item and everyone keeps stealing it.

I stopped past a local thrift store and picked up an 8-track tape (in excellent condition) titled Jesus Loves You (pretty sure it contains traditional christian hymns), a cook book called West Coast Cook Book (copyrighted 1965, in great condition) and a book called Mixed Roots: a Guide for Jewish Grandparents of Interfaith Grandchildren (in excellent condition) where someone carefully highlighted all most important parts on every single page. For all of them it was under $5, including tax. And the pièce de résistance: a bag of working, but used light bulbs (incandescent/flood blubs) I've had in my cupboard for 2 and a half years (maybe 7 - 10 of them total). It's one gift wrapped wrapped in a box with the light bulbs put into a gift bag.

Answer
The idea of a white elephant gift is that in some culture (I'm guessing in India?) if the king wanted to give you a special gift he would give you a gift of a rare white elephant. You would have to cherish it and take care of it for the rest of its life while it ate you out of house and home. So on one hand it was a gift and an honor, but on the other hand you really didn't want it. It has evolved to mean exchanging gifts that no one wants. For example, one guy emptied his closet of his ugly ties. Another friend painted a pretty picture of a road running through the woods, over a bridge and up to a distant barn - but she forgot to put a stream in the picture. The bridge was over nothing. And then there was the puzzle with one piece missing. Sounds like your gift will fit right in.

I was wondering what (if anything) people get their children as a "big brother/big sister" gift the day their next baby is born. My first son will be 7 when my second son will be born and even though he'll be included in everything, I don't want him to feel left out or that more attention is being shown to the baby. Also, my mom, sister-in-law and mother-in-law are planning my shower. What is something I can get them as a thank you gift for all their hard work? It doesn't have to be the same gift for all three, but I have no idea of how to thank them.
What great ideas, everyone! Now my problem is deciding which one to do!!

Answer
Involve your son while also giving him a gift. Get him an inexpensive digital camera. (CVS even has 1-time use digital and video cameras that are very reasonable) and give him the job of documenting what is going on--taking pictures of the baby, of what's going on at the house, of what's going on in his life that you are missing while in the hospital, etc. And if it's not a disposable camera, he can keep it for years. http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?sr=1&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2254197&origkw=digital+camera&kw=digital+camera&kwCatId=&view=all

For the folks who gave you the party, it's so nice that you want to thank them with a gift. Have you considered sending them each flowers? 1800flowers has "Happy Hour" bouquets that look like mini margaritas, starting at $30 + shipping http://ww12.1800flowers.com/dataset.do?dataset=10361&cm_search=happy%20hour

Or, have a photo book made for each of them filled with new baby pics. You can upload your photos to Snapfish.com and then order professional-looking photo books complete with captions! http://www.snapfish.com/tourphotobooks. These start at less than $15 each.

Ideas - wedding gift for future sister-in-law?

tangshengy

My fiance's sister is getting married this Sunday. They just announced it officially two days ago. (Very last minute). Need ideas for a really great gift. Please, serious suggestions only. I appreciate your thoughts in advance but criticism is not necessary.

A little background:

My fiance and I are not close to his sister (C) or her fiance (K). She is not a girly girl, we both don't know what she likes at all. Her fiance is a techy computer type. They both have dogs that hate each other. "K" already owns his own house and it's pretty much furnished except the unfinished basement.

The gift has to be really nice and something that I hope they will like or at least be impressed by. The budget is about $400 but I'm willing to go over for the right gift. Gift cards and cash are out - my fiance doesn't like it.

I had thought a nice luggage set but remembered "C" didn't like the last one she got as a gift. No idea where the honeymoon is, or if there even is one. No kids yet.
A few more details:

Neither of them cooks. They eat carry out EVERY DAY. They don't travel often. I don't know what they do with their time to be honest. They are not having a traditional wedding ceremony - just the reception for about 100 people.

They don't work out often. They don't do "cultural" things. They don't do much of anything! Sorry...I'm frustrated because I just don't know enough about them to get them anything.

Answer
The best wedding gift for a couple throwing a rushed wedding is a little relaxation. See if there is a massage therapist that specializes in couples massage that you could get to visit the newly weds. You can google therapists in your area, or use a phone book. Normally you can get a good hour and a half for around $150 per person. Some of them will even come to you, rather than you having to go to a spa!

Need gift ideas - too many kids!?

joc_8522

I now have seven nieces and nephews that I need to shop for Christmas gits for. Because there are so many I would like to start my shopping now (I am horrible with saving money so spreading it out would be helpful!). The problem I am having is that theses kids have EVERYTHING so they are difficult to shop for. If you can give me some unique ideas for any of the kids listed below I would be so grateful! Here are there ages they will be at Christmas and their sex:

Girl - 11
Girl - 9
Boy - 8
Boy - 4 1/2
Boy - 2 1/2
Boy - 1
Boy - 9 months

Because there are so many I can't afford anything too expensive, but any help is great!

Answer
For all of them, clothes are always a good option.
11 year old girl: try getting her a video game, a book, or a cellphone case. It really depends on the person.
9 year old girl: a book is a good idea. Also try finding out what movies she likes.
8 year old boy: maybe a soccer ball, or even really cool sneakers. A exciting movie or book is a good idea.
4 1/2 boy: Try getting an interesting toy, such as an assembling one: where you assemble different parts and get a kind of robot.
2 1/2 and 1 year old boys: I would get building blocks for them...
9 month boy: Try getting a sort of key-chain with his name on it. Clothes are always good, again.

I would just like to say that a Christmas present doesn't have to come wrapped. You could take them to a movie, a restaurant, or just spend a really fun day with them.
Hope this helps!

Retirement gift ideas?

gsgirl

So I need to buy a retirement gift for my father in law...the thing is, he really doesn't "need" anything, and he's pretty simple, so would't want anything fancy. But it's a pretty big deal and we want to get something special. Ideas, thoughts would be great!

Answer
if hes going to be traveling a lot during his retirement or hanging out with family and friends, he might enjoy a new camera to take pictures or better quality pictures where ever he goes. Cameta Camera also has some nice ones on sale right now.

retirement party ideas?

the_sweete

i am helping my mom plan a retirement party for my grandma. we were thinking of having it a luau theme but we need ideas of how to keep the guests entertained... and we are pretty sure its going to be "open house"... where people can come and go as they please... we are having it at our house in the backyard food is already taken care of...any ideas?

Answer
I just love this website and its ideas!

http://www.stretcher.com/stories/04/04jan19a.cfm

And this one:

http://www.shindigz.com/tipz.cfm?caid=707726

"Many people consider retirement to be one of the most relaxing and happy times of their life, however, others may approach this time with mixed emotion. Above all else, when you are planning a retirement party, be sensitive to the feelings of the retiree. If the guest of honor is being "forced" into retirement because of poor health or company downsizing, don't put the emphasis on how wonderful it will be to sleep in and to have all the time in the world for leisurely pursuits. All retirement celebrations should be as upbeat as possible, and should "honor" the life of the retiree.

As with any party, whether it be a milestone birthday party, anniversary, graduation, etc., we recommend that you center your theme around the guest of honor's interests, hobbies, passions, or hopes and dreams for the future . To get your creative juices flowing, we have outlined a few theme ideas in the sections that follow. After you make your selection, choose invitations, decorations, favors and games/activities that match your theme.

â¦Because life should be more funâ¦don't forget that even as the host or hostess, you should absolutely enjoy yourself and reap the rewards of your good planning. Choose a theme that you are excited about, and take pleasure in the little moments of satisfaction you'll encounter along the way. Let the celebration reflect the caring and joy you have put into your planning. If you need additional ideas or suggestions more specific to your party, please email us anytimeâ¦we're here to help make all your parties a huge success!

HOBBIES/INTERESTS OF THE RETIREE:
SPORTS
Golf â "Teeing up for an awesome Retirement!", "Retirement suits you to a Tee!"
Baseball â "A Grand Slam of a Career!", "Take me out to the Ballgame!"
Tennis â "Serving up wishes for an Ace Retirement"
Fishing â "Casting Wishes for a "Reel" Great Retirement!'
Sailing/Boating â "Bon Voyage", "Setting Sail for A Brighter Tomorrow", "Anchors Aweigh!"
Sports Spectator/Couch Potato â "King of the Remote", "Sports Fanatic!", "Take me out to the Ball Game!"
BOAT BUILDING- "Building a Better Tomorrow", "Anchor's Away!"
TRAVELING- "A World of Wonder Awaits!"
NATURE - Hiking/Camping â "The Great Outdoors awaits!" Environmentalist â "Rainforest Safari"
JIGSAW PUZZLES- "You've made this picture complete!"
music- "Set the Night to Music", "You've never missed a Beat!"
MOTORCYCLES/HARLEY DAVIDSON- "Hog Wild!"
PRO WRESTLING- "Stone Cold Steve (retiree's name) retires at the Peak of his Career!"
WINE CONNOISSEUR- Wine Tasting party-"A Vintage Career!"
GARDENING- "Everything's Coming up Roses" or "Time to Blossom"
WOODWORKING/CRAFTING/SEWING- "Crafting a Brighter Tomorrow!"
RODEO/SQUARE DANCING-"Wild Wild West!", "Bye-Bye Buckaroo!"
FLYING/HOT AIR BALLOONING/SKYDIVING- "Flying High Into the Future!"
By choosing a theme that fits the interest of the guest of honor, you will have made choosing the perfect gift easier for your other guestsâ¦they can purchase something that will be useful for the retiree as they pursue their interests, hobbies, goals or fantasies. We've only hit the tip of the iceberg hereâ¦have fun being creative!

NOSTALGIA:
If a trip down memory lane would appeal to your guest of honor, choose a theme with a nostalgic mood:

"REMEMBER WHENâ¦"
"ROAST AND TOAST!"
"THIS IS YOUR LIFE!"
"NOSTALGIA NIGHT!"
Using a nostalgia theme is a wonderful way to hi-light the career and life of the individual you are honoring. Do as much research before the party as you possibly can. Decorate a special chair for the honoree to sit in while they are being toasted, shine a spotlight on him or her, and preserve as many mementos as possible. A thoughtful scrapbook can then be assembled at a later date. If you are including a "Roast", ask the roasters to balance the silly comments with flattering commentsâ¦this party should make the guest of honor feel good! Ask each guest to come up with his or her own toast, tribute or remembrance. This can take many different forms: A note of thanks, a tape recorded message, a video segment, a telegram, a singing telegram, a poem, song, or skit, a photo collage, slide presentation, or a homemade music video. If you think you may have reluctant presenters in your group, ask an outgoing guest to serve as MC for the evening, and put everyone at ease. There's a ham in every group!

If the idea of spotlighting the life and career of your guest of honor doesn't appeal to you, but you'd still like to invoke a feeling of nostalgia, salute the era most appealing to the retiree, or the decade in which his/her career began. These themes are always a big hit:

"RETRO THEME" â 60s & 70s
"FABULOUS FIFTIES" â A sock hop or just good old Rock n' Roll fun!
"SWING PARTY!" â A salute to the 40s!
FANTASY RETIREMENT LOCATION:
TROPICAL PARADISE? â "Hawaiian Luau"
SANDY BEACH? â "Beach Bash"
YACHTING AROUND THE GLOBE? - "Anchors Away", "Nautical" or "Bon Voyage"
A DUDE RANCH? â "Wild Wild West!"
LAS VEGAS/MONACO? â "Casino Night"
THE AMAZON? â "It's a Jungle out there!"
GLOBE TROTTING? â "A World of Wonder Awaits!"
SULTRY SOUTH AMERICA? â "Mexican Fiesta!"
Decorate your party rooms to resemble the fantasy retirement location as much as possible. Include lots of authentic music, lighting, and food to transport guests to a really soothing place!

GENERAL THEMES:

"YOUR SHOES WILL BE HARD TO FILL"
"DREAMS OF TOMORROW"
"HOW BRIGHTLY YOU'LL ALWAYS SHINE!" â Stars, stars & more stars!
"KING/QUEEN FOR A DAY!"
"EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES"
"THE BEST IS YET TO COME"
"WE'LL BE INSIDE OUT AND BACKWARD WITHOUT YOU!" â Encourage guests to wear attire inside out, present food in reverse order (every meal should start with dessert!), have banners and invitations written back-to-front, etc.
"IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE!" â Take guests on a safari!
"PROGRESSIVE DINNER" â Include all the favorites of the guest of honor at different homes, or choose multiple restaurants, and transport all the guests from place to place on a trolley or bus, or in limousines!
"TACKY NIGHT" â Hi-light everything tacky the guest of honor has embraced or avoided over the years!"

Family gift ideas?

SJM

Money is extremely tight with everyone this year and I was trying to come up with a neat idea for a gift to give to the whole family instead of buying for each person individually. It would be for my dad, stepmom, brother age 3, brother, age 15, and stepbrother, 19. Am I just being cheap not buying individual gifts and taking the easy way out? I think everyone will understand that money is tight becasue my husband and I are also helping raise our nephew while my sister is in Kuwait. I just feel that a family gift is impersonal and need great gift ideas! PLEASE HELP!!

Answer
Family gifts are not impersonal...you are thinking of them and that is what really matters! Set a price for your gift....now go to your local Thrift Store and find a nice sized basket...maybe you can also find some Silk Christmas Floral arrangement..tear the arrangement apart, and wire some of the flowers to the basket, (or glue them with Hot Glue...you can also use Floral Picks from a local Variety Store or the Dollar Store...depending on the size of Basket you find, fill it...here are some ideas for it...While you are at the Thrift Store, look for Coffee Mugs and Tins with Christmas Motifs and scenes...these can be filled with Christmas Candy, Jelly Beans, Foil Wrapped Chocolates, or individual packages of Cocoa... or you might add Marshmellows and a can of Whipped cream found in the dairy Dept of your Grocery Store and a large box of Hot Chocolate mix, maybe find a Christmas Movie that you think they all might enjoy...wrap it or place it in the basket.....or buy the Christmas Cokes in the Bottles, and add Popcorn and Butter with the Movie....or MCDonalds Gift Cards..use a little imagination, and put the gift together.....If the basket will hold the tin, make and decorate some Sugar Cookies... and place them in the tin and if you want to....take over a gallon of Milk! Nothing is better than Milk with Cookies! You can wrap the Basket or Tin in Celephane Wrap, (to do this, Cut 4 very long pieces of Celephane, enough to go completely around your basket or Tin, or Coke or whatever......Criss-cross them in the shape of a X, draw up the ends, and tie with Curling Ribbon, and add lots of Curl ,a Card and tie at top of package.) Other ideas, make a Cheese Ball, and do Crackers and Wine, or make some Cider or Wassail and take it over...You know your family, and you know what they like...I'm sure you can think of something that will turn out to be personal and not too expensive! They will understand that you are on a budget..do not let the Commercialism of the season play on your heart. And you might want to buy a little something special for the 3 year old, Tootsie Toy Cars are not very expensive or a color book and crayons, a 3 year old is not hard nor expensive to buy for, and so you might make a small exception there if you want to...the others won't take offence at this....Good Luck, and God Bless! Hope I've helped!
Here is my favorite recipe for Sugar Cookies, I have made them since I was 10 years old and continue to make them every year (I am 56 now) They have always been popular wherever I take them...I like this recipe, because it makes about 6 dozen cookies, and you do not have to refridgerate the dough before rolling them out. However you can refidgerate the dough if you want to wait. Your nephew might want to help you and send some to his mother in Kuwait...if you do this, Freeze them before mailing and they will get there fresher....
I mix these cookies by hand, not a mixer!

Sugar Cookies
Sift together the following ingredients:
3 c. Flour, 1 tsp. baking Powder, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 1/4 c. Sugar.

Cut in 1 c. of Shortening with Fork or Pastry cutter. (You can use partial Butter or Margarine if desired)

Add 3 Unbeaten Eggs and 1 tsp. Vanilla...mix well.

Roll out onto lightly floured Board, about 1/4" thick and cut with Christmas Design cookie Cutters. Bake in Moderate Oven preheated to 375 degrees, for about 8 minutes.. Cool and frost or decorate.

(You can roll a little thicker or thinner, depending on how you like the cookie, but must experiment with cooking time if you do this)

Frosting

1 c Sifted Powdered Sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp Vanilla or other flavoring, (I always use Vanilla) 1 1/2 TBsp. Cream or Milk. Mix well... color frosting if desired with Food Coloring-Frosting will be thin....Frost your cookies and use sprinkles, decorator Sugars and decorettes, or decorate after Frosting sets. Have a table covered with Waxed Paper to let the Frosting set on the cookies, then deorate with decorator icing. Then let Frosting set again. Place in Air Tight Tins or Tupperware and Refridgerate, or Freeze until distribution.(Sometimes I go the extra mile, and decorate, but most of the time it is just the frosting and decoator Sugars & sprinkles...the cookies are always a big hit, and I also do them on Valentines Day!

Humorous Story: I was a Room Mother for 6 years, and always took these Cookies for School Parties...when the kids got older they had to take Home-Ec, and at Christmas time their teacher had them make sugar cookies and then eat them at their party..most of the kids had been in one or more of the classes of which I had been Room Mother......when they had their party, they all piped up that their cookies were terrible, and that the teacher should get my recipe! (My son flunked that assignment, and the teacher never asked for my recipe!)

Business Ideas for 2013?

Nelson

Hello! I would like to start my own Business and want some ideas. Thanks!

P.s- A home-based business would be best.

Answer
Best way is to find business that has products/services you have a interest in. Be sure to do research on the company you are interested in (how long in business, compensation plan, startup costs, etc.). Npros website (npros.com) has a directory of home based businesses. Not every company is listed, just those that registered but it has alot of info.

I decided to have a home-based business in the gift basket area as that was a interest I had for a long time. Made my own baskets for years. The company has a residual income plan which I find beneficial. You can check all details on my website (listed below).

Hope this helps.

16th birthday gift!!! IDEAS?

Scribbler4

It's my sisters 16th birthday. She is into cross country and lacrosse. Any good ideas of what to do/ get for her?

Answer
a gift card from Lady's Foot Locker. a very cool pair of athletic shoes used for cross country and lacrosse. get matching necklaces or bracelets for you and her. a gift card of her favorite restaurant. make -up kit if she wears make-up. Bare Essentials and Bare Minerals are good. very nice and natural. get her a package@ the local spa. Packages usually consist of a massage, pedi, mani etc. earrings. take her out to eat. Send her flowers to school or to her home an edible arrangement. You know the one with fruits. Buy her a perfume. I recently bought my sister in law Flora by Gucci and she asolutely loved how it smelled. get her a nice cool backpack for school and fill it with lil stuff inside. get her workout clothes for when shes in cross country or lacrosse.

im in a long distance relationship n i havent seen my gf in a month n im goin 2 c her over christmas break. wut should i get her 4 christmas?

Answer
How about a new digital camera with some "sexy" photos of you already on it? Then you can tell her that you can e-mail each other pics of yourselves every day even though she's far away. If she already has a digital comera, you could get her an iPod with some romantic songs already programmed on it, and call it "(her name)'s Playlist" and tell her to listen to it whenever she wants to feel close to you. Those are both really nice gifts, and she will be happy because they're thoughtful since you're in a long distance relationship.

Thank you gifts ideas?

Jasmine

I'm hosting a benefit concert tomorrow night. All of the bands are donating their time. I'd really like to thank them some way. I don't have a lot of time. Any ideas?
Yeah, I am cutting it dangerously close. I was really busy arranging things like lights and sound and this just occured to me.
Keep in mind, I have no budget, all of this comes from my pocket.
Um, most of them are high school bands.

Answer
You really are cutting it close aren't you? Bless your heart. I would be a basket case by now. *lol*

How about mugs with the name of the benefit on them. A t-shirt could have the same thing. Gift certificates to a local restaurant.

If the bands are from out of town or out of state, perhaps something from your area.

A nice thank you in the newspaper with the names of the bands would be a nice gesture as well.

Thank You Gift Ideas??

Its my last year of high school, and I have a real nice counselor I want to buy a gift.

She's a woman probably in her high 20's low 30's and I was planning on buying her a store gift card. What store do women mostly like to shop at?

Answer
May I suggest a potted plant for her office - a gift card is very impersonal. If you are a guy, then a plant is non-threatening/non-gender specific and would not be seen as anything inappropriate, as long as it is not 1000 red roses! Potted plant.

Good plan , our mentors need to be thanked.
