What to buy in preparation for NYC trip?

Q. I'm planning to take trip to NYC this spring with some family members. I've been numerous times, but my mother-in-law never has. For Christmas, she's asked the family to get her things that she'll need for the trip. I already bought her a book of things to do, but am drawing a blank on what else might be helpful. I'd love some suggestions for gift ideas! Thanks!

A. How about theatre gift vouchers, if she like broadway shows?

my girlfriend wants to take classes at the broadway dance company i think?
Q. I'm not sure which place she's talking about, but for christmas I thought maybe it could be a good gift idea. Does anybody know what she may be talking about in NYC?

A. It is called Broadway Dance Center. Here is their site. http://www.broadwaydancecenter.com/
Perhaps she should also consider Steps on Broadway. http://www.stepsnyc.com/
If she takes a lot of Ballet she might prefer Steps. You can by a class card in both places.

What's a good gift for a friend leaving to study abroad?
Q. A good friend of mine is leaving NYC to study abroad in Europe; I'd like to get her something, but I don't know what. Any suggestions?

A. Some ideas:
~an international phone card
~camera (depending on the budget!)
~a journal
~a language book if her country speaks something other than her native language
~a voltage adapter

Be creative based on her destination!

Gift ideas for my awesome class advisor?
Q. My class advisor is one of my favorite teachers and she has been so helpful to all of us this year, that we just have to get her a gift. I am already planning on taking a pic of our class and her on our NYC trip in April and putting it in one of those frames that people can sign, but I want to do something else. This teacher used to play basketball and is kind of a tom boy, and she teaches math, but I don't want to get her something corny like a calculator or really anything math related...any ideas?

A. That's so thoughtful of you and your class. Taking a picture will be memorable and heartwarming. You can also create your own frame to personalize it.

There are a lot of picture ideas online that you can chooses from. Try to pick the one that is easy to do and displays how you guys feel for her.

You and your class will be happy to know that your class adviser will appreciate the thought of receiving a gift that you guys will be giving. what ever it may be.

my 26th birthday is coming up and my family are asking me for plans?

Q. I'm from Vancouver BC, i don't drink and Im not sure where to go or do for my birthday this Friday any ideas?

A. Watch nice movie and give birthday treat to your friends and family either at home or outside. Get a gift card for yourself and enjoy thrills of online shopping on your 26 birthday.

I want to get Bruins tickets for my boyfriend's birthday this year, but I know absolutely NOTHING about hockey?
Q. My boyfriend's birthday is in November, but I'm trying to think of some good gift ideas since our two year anniversary is at the end of October and Christmas isn't too long after that. I'm gonna do something cute for our anniversary, but for his birthday I really wanna get him Bruins tickets. The only problem is, I don't know what are good tickets to get, like what games, and seating and stuff. Can anyone give me some tips? Thanks (:

A. look onto the bruins website and look at the schedule. Games agianst rivals like the habs, philedalphia, tampa bay or even new york would be good. Also, if they play a really good team like washington or vancouver in that time, the pace will be good and exciting. I personally like to sit near the back of the first balcony. Still pretty close to the ice, but you have a wider view.

Where can I get Australian native plants in Vancouver?
Q. In particular I'm looking for snow tolerant varieties of Eucalyptus (gum trees), melaleuca (paper barks/ti-trees), or Callistemon (bottlebrush). Banksias would be alright too, but I'm not sure if their are any snow tolerant varieties.

I've been on exchange here for a semester, and I think an Australian native plant would be a nice parting gift for my housemates
I'm in Vancouver BC

A. You haven't specified whether you are in Vancouver, B.C. or Vancouver, Washington State.

There is a individual in Washington State who has a web page devoted to hardy Eucalyptus species. The url is http://www.angelfire.com/bc/eucalyptus/

This will give you some ideas about the species that will survive where you are. The page also has links to plants other than Eucalyptus that you may find interesting, as well as to seed sources.

where is the cheapest spa place in vancouver?
Q. just looking for gift ideas for my hardworking mom...I live in coquitlam, so if anyone can give me some feedback about where i can find the best deals on massage packages in spas, i would really appreciate it! =)

A. It's a very lovely idea, and will be a well-appreciated gift for your mom. Of the prices I checked, the least expensive seems to be offered at The Wild Orange Spa:

What is the best holiday gift for a girlfriend of 6months?

Q. What are some awesome gift ideas for my girlfriend of 6 months? I already got her some lingerie, but need to get her something that she can tell her parents about :) Any and all ideas are helpful. Thank you very much!

A. Something beautiful and romantic. Hot air ballooning would be amazing or even a weekend trip away to a place away from home. An expensive dinner, jewelry something worth while.

Is this a lame gift idea for my girlfriend?
Q. My girlfriend and I have been together for over five years. I have given her many pieces of jewelry as well as other common and not so common gift ideas. We have been doing it long distance for the last 1.5 years which kind of plays into the theme of the gift I was thinking of giving her for xmas this year. The gift is a personalized throw pillow on one side it is a cute picture of both of my dogs on my family's boat with their tiny dog life preservers on. On the back it is a good picture of us both on a trip Cancun this Summer, in text underneath it says "Cancun, 2012" and centered underneath that "I love you". The pillow is a light pink color that fits in with the color of her bed. I was thinking this would be nice since we do not currently live together as it has pictures of both us together and my dogs that she loves. I am worried however that this is a lame gift... I am also planning on getting her some chocolates or something along those lines and obviously a card.

What do you think, lame idea or a nice idea?

A. No, that is not a lame idea. That is a great gift. I think your girlfriend is going to be very happy.

What are some gift ideas for meeting my girlfriend's parents for first time?
Q. I am meeting my girlfriend's parents for the first time in under two weeks. I'm not a 'youngin', so I have been down this road before, but 20+ years ago.

What are other gift ideas beyond wine and flowers? For further refinement, we are meeting for dinner in a restaurant.

A. Hey I think you can get them something practical yet personal. For the mom, you can get her a nice pair of gloves. I recommend you check out KinaRosa on Etsy ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/kinarosa ) These gloves are handmade, very high quality. They are unique yet affordable. My mom loves the gloves. I am sure it'll be a great gift for your girlfriend's mom since it's winter time. If you are not sure what color to buy, go for black, chocolate brown or burgundy red. They are safe colors that every woman loves.

For the dad, do you know what he likes? I think it's always good to go for more practical gifts for men. If he like cigars, you can buy him a nice box of cigars. If he like coffee, get him some good coffee beans. If you really don't know what he likes, you can get him a nice pen. My dad likes pens from Cross. They are not too expensive, but they are good pens.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your gift searching!

Is it true a serial killer can repent on his deathbed and go to heaven?

Q. I'm a Christian, and I'm not a big fan of this idea. I feel like if someone kills someone in cold blood multiple times, that should make them ineligible for heaven?

A. In some instances, possibly yes.

A hardened criminal MIGHT repent on his deathbed, but I think there's a greater probability that he CAN"T, on his own, that is.

The biblical basis of this belief is the narrative in Luke 23, as Jesus was hanging on the cross between 2 criminals:
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence?
41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Some people think it would be easy even for hardened sinners to just repent and believe. How can it be, when it's difficult to do even for those who haven't done any crime; those who are upright based on human standards (I can sense many of them here in R&S)?

On the other hand, I don't think any sinner is ineligible for heaven.

I believe that there are only 2 requirements to be saved:
(1) One must be a sinner. All sinners are qualified; not just the minor offenders; ALL sinners; therefore ALL people.
(2) One must repent and believe. This is an individual, subjective matter.

Once a person has heard and understood the Good News, yet decides to continue in his life of sin and defiance of God (deceived into thinking that he will still have a chance to decide otherwise later), the more difficult it would be for that person to repent and believe.

Hebrews 6
4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,
5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age,
6 if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

Luke 8
4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable:
5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.
6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.
7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.
8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant.
10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, "'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.'
11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.
14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

What gift to give to my Japanese friend?
Q. My japanese friend is coming to visit in October, and i have no idea what gift to give him. I know it is an act of politeness to give gifts in the japanese culture, but i honestly don't know what he would like. I know for a fact he likes comedy, but i can't get the box set of his favorite American show cause i can't find it anywhere.
I live in California, so maybe something unique or local? Suggestions?

A. Kingdom Hearts

If Paul baptized entire households, did those households exclude infants and children?
Q. Acts 16:14 One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Pauls message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home.

Acts 16:33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

I Cor 1:16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I dont remember if I baptized anyone else.

A. Further, St Peter said that baptism was offered to everyone: "repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children" (Acts 2:38-39).
1) Where in Scripture do Catholics get the idea of infant baptism?
The first place to look is in the Old Testament, where baptism in prefigured in circumcision. St. Paul makes this comparison in Col. 2:1112: "In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism" (emphasis added). The Old Testament presents the similarities that St. Paul is writing about. The first is that children were circumcised in Judaism, even though they had yet to make a 'profession of faith.' It was assumed that they would be raised in the faith. Faith was not a prerequisite for circumcision or baptism in regards to children. For adults in Judaism, faith was a prerequisite for circumcision. The pattern is the same in Catholicism: if one is an adult, faith is a prerequisite before receiving the rite of membership (i.e. baptism); if one is an infant (can't make the decision for oneself), one may be given the rite of membership in the knowledge that one will be raised in the faith. Pauls reference to baptism as "the circumcision of Christ"- that is, the Christian equivalent of circumcision- becomes clear.
What we do find is entire households being baptized... everyone. Some Fundamentalists will assert that children are not part of these households... but that is a ridiculous idea! Of all the households mentioned, they all contained only adults? Let's look at those Bible verses: "She [Lydia] was baptized, with her household" (Acts 16:15); "I [Paul] did baptize also the household of Stephanas" (1 Corinthians 1:16); "he [the jailer of Paul and Silas] was baptized, with all his family" (Acts 16:33). St. Peter said that baptism was offered to everyone: "repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children" (Acts 2:38-39).
What did the early Church say about infant baptism? I'll only include two in this post, but you can read more of them here.
Irenaeus: "He [Jesus] came to save all through himself; all, I say, who through him are reborn in God: infants, and children, and youths, and old men. Therefore he passed through every age, becoming an infant for infants, sanctifying infants; a child for children, sanctifying those who are of that age" (Against Heresies 2:22:4 [A.D. 189]).

Hippolytus: "Baptize first the children, and if they can speak for themselves let them do so. Otherwise, let their parents or other relatives speak for them" (The Apostolic Tradition 21:16 [A.D. 215]).

Let us remember the words of Christ- "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God" (Luke 18:16).

etc....

What is this bible verse referring to, exactly?
Q. Luke 21:35
For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.

I think I have an idea, but I can't be too sure.

A. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass and to stand before the Son of Man.
-Luke 21:35-36

This bible verse is referring to the "Rapture".

Jesus is coming for a pure and spotless bride. He is not coming for a bride that loves sin and practices lawlessness. The scriptures are absolutely chock full of passages that consistently state this in clear terms. If our sins are not blotted out, they are remembered and we will not be spotless and will not enter the kingdom of God. To sincerely repent, we must not only avoid our sin, we must HATE SIN. The flesh, our unrepentant heart is hostile to God and cannot please Him period. s, the Holy Spirit. The whole heart means ALL, 100%. Anything less is not true repentance and we harbor idols in our hearts. If we do not repent we do not fulfill Gods law, we practice sin or said another way commit lawlessness. Once we fully repent, the power of God comes into us and circumcises our heart and so long as we are led by the Spirit we will purify ourselves of all sin and idols. Paul told us in Romans 8:14 Those who are led by the Spirit of God those are the sons of God.

If we are not led by the Spirit of God, we are tares and deceive ourselves about our faith. Jesus cannot be our Lord, we have not repented or if we had, we have fallen away from the faith. Paul confirmed that repentance is a change of heart. Not a partial change of the heart, but a radical change of heart.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
-Romans 6:23

We must ALWAYS be bearing good fruit.

I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;a and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does NOT abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
-John 15:1-8

What should I get my 7 year old sister and sister in law for x-mas this year?

Q. They both don't play with barbies. They are both sorta tomboys. They don't play sports though. I am stumped as to what to get them. They have tons of toys already. I don't know anything about thier clothing sizes (do you think a 7 year old girl would want clothes for x-mas?). What do I get them?

A. There is a Hannah Montana doll out that a lot of girls would be interested in. If they are into animals, my Littlest Pet Shop is also popular. Clothes are not a bad idea. You could ask their sizes. Another neat gift is a video game or one of those game controllers where the whole game is built into the controller. They have Pac-Man and games like that, all you have to do is plug the controller into the tv. A lot of times I'll take my niece shopping. That way we get a fun day out together and she gets to pick exactly the present she wants. It makes it easier and fun at the same time.

I need a gift idea. What can I give a 7 year old ghost for Christmas?
Q. I have a 7 year old female ghost living with me. She's mostly quiet and shy but she wants to be noticed and recognized. She will do what ever it takes to be acknowledged. I just to acknowledge her with something special this Christmas. Any thoughts?

A. You get props just for asking this oO I think that most little girls like dolls and what not, if you want to go that route.

Can you give me a Christmas gift idea for a 7 year old girl?
Q. We would like to give our niece a gift in the $30 range. This girl has everything so I'd like to give her something unique. I asked her mom for ideas and she said anything Barbie, a baby doll, or artsy. Suggestions please!

A. What about a gift card to Chuck E Cheese, the zoo, or any place she would like to do. Some other things you could get are craft kits, paints, art set, easy bake oven, 2008 Barbie Doll, or Walmart has a Big Barbie cart set with crayons, glue, and a bunch of activities she can do and it is only $10.

What to get a 7 year old for her birthday?
Q. I need gift idea's for a 7 year old girl. Please don't ask me to just ask the child. It's a surprise and I just need some gift idea's. Thanks!!

A. Maybe a small pet (if her parents allow one) such as a fish, guinea pig, puppy, or kitten. If she plays with Barbie's then get her one of those. Or maybe a Webkinz or a Club Penguin membership if she would be interested in that. A stuffed animal, book, art stuff, or a movie would probably work, too.

What would a 13 yr. old girl like for Christmas?

Q. A woman at work had her husband just abandon her and her two children, ages 9 and 13. A couple of us are buying gifts for the kids... I have some ideas for the 9 yr. old boy, but what do 13 year old girls like these days? I have absolutely no information about her other than her age, and don't want to ask the mother what the little girl would like, for fear that she'd be embarrassed about her situation...we're not really supposed to even know about the husband leaving! Help!!

A. What lovely work mates you are so thoughtful.

Thinking of a list don't expect you to be buying them all just some ideas:-

Hair products
perfume
make-up
necklace/chain
watch
clothes
bath products
smelly's
socks
slippers
nightwear

I think she a bit old for high school musical stuff

Just some things my 13yr got on her list for Christmas

Hope my friend would be like you lot if anything happened to my marriage

What are some unique homemade xmas gift ideas?
Q. Creative, afforable, unique gift ideas and crafts???
i need help-i have less than 100 bucks to spend on these ppl:

1)My mom who loves handmade and unique things(she gets 3 gifts cause of her birthday)
2)A picky 9-yr old sister(something huge and affordable)
3)A outgoing and energetic grandma that likes to collect everything especially dolls)
4)My 2 friends that i work at the library with(ones a rocker boy and the others a christian girl)
5)The elders at the library(something simple, something that they can put on their desk maybe)

A. 1) Make her a blanket that she can keep on the back of the couch. If you go to a fabric store or Walmart you can get fleece anywhere from 2.00 and up. Then just fringe the edges. You can be as creative as you want. Then grab a mason jar some epsom salt, food coloring and concentrated liquod potpouri (in a scent she would like) mix the salt with a few drops of food coloring and scent. (not to much on the color or scent, it only takes a little bit) Mix it in a bag until the color and scent are mixed well with the salt. Pour into the jar and tighten with lid. Add a small piece of material and ribbon to make it cute and add the tag- Add a handful to a hot bath for a relaxing break. For the third gift, make her a homemade gift card for a couple peaceful bath time breaks. That should make her happy.
Cost 10.00-15.00
2) Make her a photo board. Grab a thin piece of board. Something that is like 3ft by 3ft. But very thin. Just a little thicker than cardboard. Put something you can stick tacks in. Cover it with a thin layer of batting, and her favorite color of matierial. Then take some cute cloth ribbon and run it back and forth to make a criss cross shape (like tic tac toe, or a chess board # kind of design.) Then tack the ribbon in place with cute little tacks. Start her out with a disposable camera. Then help her arrange the pics when they are developed. She can add her school friends and other photos.
Cost 10.00

3)You can make Grandma a mop doll. Their really easy.
You can get the mop and the pattern at most fabric shops. She will love it. I made a few of them. The more creative you are the nicer they are.
cost 10.00-15.00

4) Get them stockings of goodies. You can make them special for each
Cost 10.00

5)Since you see them daily (most of them right) Make a big plate of cookies one day and some punch. Give them each a card telling them merry christmas.
cost 15.00

Hope some of it helped.

Any ideas for 9 yr old boy sleepover party?
Q. I'm looking for fun ideas for a sleepover birthday party for about six 9yr old boys. I don't want them to just sit in front of the PS2 all night. Any ideas for fun games, activities, gift bag treats, etc?? Both indoor and outdoor game ideas would be appreciated. Also, any tips or advice from parents who have lived through one of these parties? lol

THANKS!!!!

A. I've hosted my share of sleepovers despite my young age (lots of brothers and I'm the oldest). I would recommend if it's warm where you live, to let them loose with water guns or balloons, if that's not your sort of thing I always thought foods make or break a sleepover. Something I used to always do was buy the ingredients to make mini pizzas and then let the kids make their own, they really enjoy it. At the end of the night though some of the best memories they'll have is being in front of that PS2 with their friend(s) so don't take that away completely.

I am Having a hard time finding a gift?
Q. I have to buy a gift for a 9 year old skater boy and a little evil 3 year old that has everything. Does anyone have any suggestions.

A. It really depends on your price range, but here are some websites you can find gifts:
For the 9 yr old skater: www.360skate.com, www.plusskateshop.com another option is a skating video game, like Tony Hawk: Proving Ground, it's available for most game consoles or a bongo board.
For the evil 3 yr old: There's always coal, j/k. ToysRus.com has a guide for ideas for kids of specific ages, he might enjoy a monster truck or pirate ship playset.
I hope this helps. Happy holidays!

Cheap gift ideas for male coworkers?

Q. I work with about 5 guys and i have no idea what to get them for a holiday gift. We're all about 17 year old so, i don't want to get them something for an older person that they wouldn't use and I don't want to spend too much. For the girls I work with, I spent about 5-7 dollars each, so the same would be given to the guys. I know gift cards work but aren't they kind of tacky since people know how much you've spent? any gift ideas would be greatly appriciated!! Thanks in advance!

A. Cookies, if you are any good at cooking, anything edible will be a hit. These gifts aren't meant to be keepsakes, cherished forever. They say, thanks for being you. Any sort of tasty treat YOU make will be talked about next Christmas.

What should I get my coworkers when leave?
Q. I have been working at an assisted living home in New England for a year, and just gave my notice yesterday for a new job. I want to get the residents a really nice gift- any ideas?

A. A heartfelt thank you note would certainly be appreciated by all the residents. Candy, baked goods, etc. would be appropriate depending on varying dietary needs. A potted plant or something that the residents can continue to appreciate would also be lovely. Remember it is the thought that counts and whatever you give will be enjoyed.

Another question regarding baby showers; who is supposed to give a baby shower and who should be invited?
Q. Is there proper etiquette in regards to whom gives a baby shower? Who should be invited, not forgotten? I was thinking of perhaps thinking of the "new mom" as well in gift ideas, what do you think?

A. Friends or family give the baby shower. Doesn't matter where it's held (sometimes at the mom-to-be's house because she has the largest 'free' space). It also depends on if this is a co-worker shower (just coworkers) or friends/family. If a coworker shower, just invite coworkers, the mom and maybe a friend to help afterwards. If a family/friend or just a single shower, invite close coworkers, family members, friends and close neighbors (usually childhood home, not current).

Don't forget the stepmom, if there is one, although this is sometimes a challenge. Usually best not to seat them together.

What kind of gift should I give a coworker?
Q. I need some gift ideas for a female colleague is now leaving our work place after some years.

A. Nothing too personal. But something to remind her of where she worked and her colleagues.
I like plants because they last if taken care of just like friendships.
Perhaps better is a book of Wise Sayings or Workplace Jokes. A photo album of them and their colleagues at different events and parties or picnics. If it is from the group it can be signed by all and be a permanent remembrance.

I prefer a well thought gift rather than a gift card for amounts of $25.00 or less.

If it is a large gift from a group or department, consider a gift and a check or gift card.

Just a gift card (unless it is for a place you know they will love to shop) says I don't really know you and I want to give you something so here. Then there is no lasting memory of the giver If they have to purchase something for themselves.

God Bless You, ;-)

What is a good birthday gift idea for a Chinese lady boss?

Q. Hi, I have a new chinese lady boss who is a very nice person and I would like to get her a gift for her upcoming birthday. I havent had the time to really get to know her, so I am counting on finding some standard time tested gift ideas that I cant go wrong with. It would be preferable if the gifts have some sort of a chinese theme to it that she might appreciate.

Please help!

A. I'm Chinese!

As the Belarussian answerer said, you give gifts as you would any lady. However, do be aware of some Chinese gift codes:

- Most Chinese value the colours red and gold, because it is the colour of good luck
- Never give any forms of knives as a gift (e.g. letter openers, manicure sets etc) because it is perceived as a symbol of severing the friendship.
- Never give clocks, fake cash (like those rectangular notepads with dollars printed on the back of them) or white flowers--these are mourning items, and receiving them would be perceived as wishing they were dead.

Normally I don't give personal birthday gifts to a boss, but might initiate to arrange with some colleagues buying a joint gift for her. This makes the boundary clear that our relationship is business, not personal; and it avoids misinterpretation, especially in cross cultural situations.

My top picks for lady gifts are usually stuff she could wear, including earrings/bracelets, handbags, belts, perfume, or a silk shawl. However, these are very personal gifts that could be inappropriate for a boss; especially, if as your username says, you are but a trainee. Don't forget that Chinese people are very hierarchical, so receiving gifts as such may be awkward for a Chinese woman even if she is very nice.

If you really want this birthday to be your appreciation for her being part of your life, it may be best to get her a gift that she will use up and can share with her someone special. This may include vouchers to dine at her favourite restaurant, get pampered at a fabulous spa, stay at a hotel in a nearby weekend getaway spot, or enjoy an evening at the opera if she's into that thing. If you don't want to spend too much, vouchers for Starbucks or a movie would suffice. But whatever you get her, make sure you have two of them included, because (especially if you're a man) it's not as nice to receive one of these and not be able to take her someone special with. Not only is including two a sign of respect for the possibility that she may want to spend it with someone special other than you, but also two is a lucky number in Chinese numerology.

If you decide not to have a go at any of these, a birthday cake jointly bought with your colleagues to be eaten in the office/wherever you work never fails. Don't forget candles! Party hats & horns and decorations would be nice, but optional.

What is a good red wine and a good fruity wine?
Q. It's almost christmas and I'm looking for some last minute gift ideas for my girlfriends parents. The mother loves fruity wines and the father loves red wine. I need to find two wines, preferably wines that I can find at an LCBO or a winery in the Toronto area. I'm very inept when it comes to wines and all the help that can be provided would be very appreciated.
Thanks

A. A good choice for sweet wine:
Rieslings have a floral aroma. They range from very dry and crisp to intensely sweet depending on where it is from. German Riesling is slightly sweet and balanced with some acidity. California Riesling tends to be sweeter.

A good choice for red wine:
Zinfandel can be light to full bodied. It can be rich and spicy or lighter and fruitier. Aromas and flavors that are typical include raspberry, jam, black pepper, and licorice. A specific Zin suggestion -

Renwood 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel
The 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel is medium ruby in color. The bouquet consists of brown sugar, caramel, sage, eucalyptus, and bursting with dark berry fruit. The flavor is a sumptuous blend of warm blackberries on the entry, with a hint of dried fruit, finishing with sweet fleshy tannins.(around $20)
If you can't find Renwood other good wineries are Rosenblum, Serghesio, and Ridge.

Good luck!

Gift ideas for a 6 month anniversary with my girlfriend?
Q. Our 6 month anniversary is coming up next month, and I just heard from my girlfriend tonight that she was working on my gift. We've never exchanged anniversary presents before, and by the way she's talking, it sounds like she's making me something.

I'm a little surprised, and also a little worried about how I can match her gift.
I can't draw, or write, or any of that stuff. So poems and drawings are out of the question.

I need gift ideas now, please.

A. Here are some gift ideas:

The Six Flowered Bouquet:

Since it is your sixth anniversary, get six bouquets for her from a florist. Each bouquet will contain bundle of different flowers. Red roses, tulips, lilies, canna, lotus, columbine, cherry blossom, hydrangea, etc. look beautiful. Write a short message of love on each bouquet.

A Memory Locked Scrapbook

The idea of making a scrapbook for your sweetheart is indeed very romantic. Get a blank scrapbook from a paper house. Procure decorative materials like colorful ribbons, glitters, frames and decorative pieces. Scribble everything chronologically right from the day you met her and jot every details about the sweet and sour experiences, being in the relationship with her. Glue pictures of the special moments captured. Embellish the pages and the cover. This is one of the best romantic gifts to tell how much she means to you.

The Love Basket

Six months have rolled on and you very well know what interests her. Collect the tit bits and put them inside the 'LOVE BASKET'. Your girlfriend might be a music lover or a movie buff. Stack up inside the basket a medley of songs and her favorite movies as well. You can also fill the basket with books she is fond of.

The Permanent Gift

If you can spend some extra dollars on the gift, then a ring or a chain will be a permanent gift for her. A simple and chaste diamond ring or a necklace of dazzling white pearl. A swanky silver chain with a heart shaped red pendant. These gift items are exquisite. You can even purchase a watch from the best brands available in the market. Surely she will exclaim in joy when you open the surprise for her.

What are some websites that I can find unique and fun gift ideas for both children & adults?

Q. I'm looking for some different birthday & Christmas gift ideas for people and I wanted to know if anyone knew of some websites they love that could help me in my quest?

They don't have to sell both kids & adults on the same website per se! They can be totally separate!

I would like to know how much the average American parent spends on Christmas gifts per child?
Q. I would like to know how much an average American parent spends on Christmas per child? What are good gift ideas for adult kids ages 25, 21, and 19? Is it ok to give gift certificates with maybe another small personal gift?

A. My parents were what some would consider middle class. They spent no more than $200 when times were GOOD an no less than $20

For those age ranges they should not expect you to spend much, they are probably just learning how to be independant and are beginning to understand why their parents used to say 'we can't afford that" now that they are paying bills on their own.

My sister and i LOVED whenever we got giftcards....it meant that we had the opportunity to shop......whcih is something not many have the luxury of doing at that age....unless they still live at home.....even if we did live at home, we would have loved them.

Some things I loved...or would have loved, getting at that age

1.Gas gift card
2.Forever 21 gift card
3.old fashioned bored game that we playd on christmas as a family
4. A nice christmas breakfast
5. Gift certif to M.A.C.
6. Taget or grocery store giftcard.
7.Ikea Giftcard

What are some good recipes for homemade Christmas gifts?

Q. I am already planning on making fudge, and toffee but would like some more candy or dessert ideas
I am also looking for some gift jar ideas/recipes. I already plan on one for chocolate chip cookies and homemade hot cocoa. I would really like a good recipe for a blueberry muffin one if you know of any.

I have a large family and want to give each of the adults (24) a gift somewhere along these lines, but I don't want to make all the same things so any ideas?

A. Flavored sugar is a great 'gift jar' gift. I used a spice mill to grind dried lemon, orange, lime peel (separately) and added them to sugar with a drop of food coloring shaken in for effect. I also buy a bag or two of sugar every January and go to the whole foods store and buy vanilla beans (they are cheaper). I make a slit down the middle lengthwise (careful not to go all the way through to the other side) then I place a bunch of these beans in an airtight jar with the sugar and leave it alone until Christmas. Then I put it in jars and give out. The lime sugar and the vanilla sugar seem to be the most appreciated. Especially by tea drinkers and bakers.

You can also take last years fruitcake (you know it lasts forever) and crumble it up. Then, dip your hands in a little water or flavored liqueur and roll into small balls and place in a pan to dry overnight. Then melt some choc chips in the microwave (one bag choc chips and 1 teaspoon Crisco for shine) dip balls and place on wax paper til chocolate sets. This recipe makes fruitcake lovers out of anyone who loves chocolate (esp. the dark chocolate).

What kind of baked good mixes have people made to give as gifts in jars?
Q. I am not a very creative person and am looking for any cheap homemade gift ideas for Christmas. I thought these baked goods in jars were pretty cute. I was just curious as to what kinds of things people have put in these....or if anyone has any other cheap gift ideas I'd love to hear them!

Thanks!

A. Great question! Brownies work well! Layer dry ingredients in jar w directions to add to melted butter, eggs and vanilla. Also most cookie recipes ie choc chip, oatmeal raisen and almond. Other inexpensive gifts could be a cute pad for a groc list w magnet to go on refrig ( try target or walmart or dollar store), a single voltive in a cheap glass holder ( walmart or ben franklin), or buy a bag of red & green M&M's and present in a cheap but pretty glass container. Hope this helps!

How and how much do you use Facebook? Do you feel that this has changed how you communicate?
Q. I am writing a research paper on Facebook and how it effects communication. Please include any imformation regarding your likes and dislikes about Facebook.
Please include your age and gender in your answer. I need this information for data purposes only.

A. I generally like Facebook. I don't use it as much as I used to, but I do spend about half an hour a day there checking up on those games that still amuse me.
What I don't like about Facebook is the annoying way those same games make your friends post lame "click here to get a gift" posts on my wall. Especially since that triggers the alert email to my account. *sigh*
But that's a minor annoyance which is weighed out by the fact that it's suddenly a lot easier for me to have at least some of sort of grasp of what's going on in my family. I live far away from any relatives and I'm not the type to grab the phone and call people, so I rarely had any idea how they were doing before joining Facebook. Now I can just read their status updates and be up to date with how they're doing. Yay for technology.
(And yes, I do know that it sounds sad. But no one in my family calls unless there has been an emergency of some kind. We are simply not people who chat over the phone for hours on end.)

And I am an 23-year old female.

Is a gender neutral baby gift appropriate as a Christmas gift for a couple expecting their third child?
Q. My boyfriend's friend and his wife are expecting their third child. They already have two boys ages three and one. I thought since they are being so kind to let me stay with them and my boyfriend for three weeks, I'd get them something for Christmas.

I don't know the gender of the baby, so would a gender neutral baby gift be appropriate for their Christmas gift?
I have no idea what that will be. Suggestions are appreciated!

A. Of course! I'd be terrible to give them something feminine when it turns out to be a boy!

Oh, I guess you mean to get them "a baby gift?" :) Yes, I'm sure the parents would love it. What woman DOESN'T like getting baby things(especially a pregnant woman)? Plus, I'm sure it will be very useful to them as well.

I'd be interested to know what you were getting them(not that it matters too much I guess).

ETA: clothes, bottles, pacifiers, blankets, booties, rattles, teddy bears, bibs, new born mittens, onesies(sp?), etc. What all I suggested in my other answer. I wasn't sure if you knew what a diaper cake was. I didn't ever see one myself until about a year ago. It's a shame you couldn't bring that.

Or, you could get something little for the 2 little kids? Something distinctly American and/or of the state you're living in. Maybe a Christmas ornament - "for the ..... Family" or "Merry Christmas from Montana" or wherever it is you're from. Just an idea...

What is a good gift idea for a 7 year old girl?

Q. She is a wild 7 year old girl who acts like she is 16 hahaha
She is my girlfriends little sister and I want to get her something that she will like
Ideas?

A. If I had a seven year old girl to shop for, I would get her roller blades.

I have my seven year old brother in law to shop for. We're going to get him a baseball glove, bases, and a bat. He plays with his two friends at homeschool every day but he doesn't have much to play with for baseball.

What are 7 year old girls into these days?
Q. I need to buy something for my goddaughter who turned 7 today. I am not that close to her unfortunately as I do not see her often but I still get her presents and hopefully will see her for her birthday this year. But I have no idea what 7 year old girls are into. I doubt it's Dora the Explorer as that was her favorite show. So any ideas of what I can get her to surprise her?

A. My 7-year old daughter liked Dora as a 3-4 year old, but no more! Here are her current favorites:
* Polly Pocket
* Doll house
* Jewelry & hair clips
* Disney princesses
* Outdoor toys; roller blades, bicycle, jump rope. She loves to decorate her bike.
* Interesting school supplies (cute erasers, sparkly pencils, stickers, and sets of colored pencils, paints, etc.)
She's not crazy about Barbies, but some of her friends like them.
Her aunt gave her a gift certificate to Target last spring, and that was VERY exciting for her.

Hope that gives you some ideas!

What are good gift ideas for a 7 year old girl?
Q. Looking for some cool gift ideas
she is into Crafts,Sewing ,and music

so maybe something along those lines

A. Go to micheals craft store. Get her pots, paint brushes and paint. It keeps you busy and a great hobby.

What is a good idea for a gift for someone that volunteers as a subject for a psychological report?
Q. I want to give, as a token of gratitude, something to this young female and to these two children, a 9 year old boy and a 7 year old girl, who will help me prepare a psychological report posing as subjects. They will be asked to perform several psychological tests as well as to fill out questionnaires and forms with intimate and maybe critical personal information. They are assured that this information will be kept confidential although it will be supervised, and I will make sure that this report actually ends up with them.

A. I had to do this when I first started grad school. I administered a lengthy cognitive test to a 9 year old and had to write a report. Before the test, I did a quick interview and discovered that the little girl really liked art, so I got her a little art case with crayons, pencils, paints, and pastels. So, maybe you can ask the boy and girl what they like and what their hobbies are. It will help you build rapport and you'll get some gift ideas too.

What are the best places to golf in San Diego county?

Q. I recently moved to San Diego with my boyfriend. My boyfriend loves to golf and I would like to know about the different golf courses/centers in the area. It is almost his birthday and I would like to surprise him with some type of golfing excursion or golfing gift certificates. Do you have any ideas as to where/what I can give him?

A. You have something like 82 golf courses to choose from in the county and you can't go too far wrong. The ones people from all over the country travel here to play are:

Torrey Pines - the only public course on the professional circuit. If a golfer plays one course in San Diego (or in California for that matter) in his/her lifetime, it will be Torrey Pines.

Steele Canyon - a newer course out past El Cajon, but people travel from all over to play it.

The Aviara golf course in Carlsbad - Adjoining the Four Seasons Aviara, another very popular course.

The golf course at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in Rancho Bernardo - another course people travel from all over to play.

Riverwalk in Mission Valley - the closest to downtown and a good bet if cost is a factor.

...but like I said, it's hard to go wrong and you have tons of choices. If you're having a hard time securing a tee time for Torrey Pines, call The Lodge at Torrey Pines and ask the concierge. If they can't help you, ask them about ticket brokers - there are a couple who buy up open tee times at some of these courses and resell them.

Give me ideas for a mini golf course for work?
Q. The golf miniature course has to be 10 by 3. It's going to be in a Meeting room with 4 other golf courses. I'm going borrow my buddy's indoor putting green (a small green runway with a ramp and hole). I need to do something clever b/c i'm competing with other marketing mangers. Sr. Mangers will be putting in these courses and judge which one is best. The courses should relate to accounting/finance and be tasteful. Can you give me some ideas?

A. If you are interested to present some Golf Accessories to your Friend or some relatives, these points can be considered:

* The best present for any serious golfer is a gift certificate for a round of golf (with a buddy) or to a pro shop. He can get whatever he wants, which is good because most golfers are pretty picky about their equipment. He will appreciate it.

What would a good birthday gift be for a late 70s Male that is an avid golfer?
Q. It is my grandfather's birthday and I have no idea what to get him. He is an avid golfer (during the summer as we live in an area with winter). He watches lots of sports on TV.

A. I'm that age and I just recieved a nice 3 quarter rain, pull over rain jacket that keeps me warm and dry because I live in Michigan. Any golf store will know what I'm talking about. I would not have thought of it myself.

What to get for a parent who has everything?

Q. I'm having trouble with gift ideas for my mom. We're celebrating Christmas later than the 25th, so I still have time, but I'm struggling. My mom has everything. I always end up getting her the same thing because I never know what to buy. It usually has something to do with wine or perfume of some kind. The biggest obstacle comes from the fact that my mom and stepdad living in Bogota, Colombia, meaning any kind of gift that would be like a massage or something is out of the question. I've already designed coffee mugs for them since they're avid coffee drinkers but I know I need to get something more than that.

Does anyone else have an idea of something sweet and simple that isn't over done? I'm a college student, too, so I don't have that much money to spend.

Thanks!

A. Does she like to read? If so, how about a favorite book that you liked and include a hand made bookmark. It would be like sharing time together and she would also have a piece of you.

What do I get for my new mother in law for Christmas?
Q. My new husband has just handed over the responsiblity to me of getting a gift for his mom, 6 days before christmas! Eye yi yi! Does anyone have any gift ideas for a in her late 60's women who has everything and I don't know too much about. Any generic cool gift I may not have though of, any suggestions appreciated!
Merry Christmas!

A. you should ask your new husband, if he is giving you the responsiblity of getting the gift, he could at least give you some ideas. if he isn't willing to help, get a gift basket of things she likes. or some tickets to a play or something. it kinda depends on what she likes. some people like sports, or music, or knitting, cars, it's hard to give you ideas when i don't know what she likes. maybe a day at a spa. does she like coffee, you could get her some fancy coffee and some cups and such to go with it. give her a night out on the town or bring her to dinner one evening.

What would be a great gift for my cheerleading coaches?
Q. I have three AMAZING coaches. I need some gift ideas that can be personalized for each them. It needs to show how much my team truly appreciates everything they do for us, everything they have sacrificed for us, and how much they support us. Please and thank you! =)

A. Make them each a scrapbook. I did this for my coach once and they loved it. Have all the girls get together and put money in towards a scrapbook and the materials and put it together. There must be girls with moms who take bunches of pics at competitions, games, and practices. If not and you dont have enough pictures, get a team photo and put it in a nice frame for each of them. Have all the girls sign and then they'll always remember you guys. Good luck and I hope they like the gift... Whatever you get them.

What is the coolest mothers day gift you have ever recieved?
Q. Trying to find a neat and different idea for Mom this year. She is retired, has everything she ever wanted, and no real hobbies except gardening, and I live several states away, so plants or trees are kinda out of the question.

A. Having never received one as you can readily tell, I can only share stuff I thought my mom liked.

Stuff I got for her that I thought she would like often ended up stored away for posterity somewhere. The stuff that I saw she put in places she could see anytime were things where I put some "heart" into it.

Some examples are: souveniers I got for her while on trips abroad where she could see I was thinking about her even while I was busy with many other things. A small trophy for "world's best mom." A framed poem about how much I appreciated the things she taught me, and another one about the hard times in her life when she sacrificed so I could have, and another about "now I understand what she was trying to explain." And other things that let her know how much I appreciated and loved and thought about her a lot.

Maybe consider sending her your answer to the "hereafter" question with things about her too? Anyway, just my opinions.

How can you get papers for a dog when you cant contact the seller?
Q. the dog was a gift and it has no papers and the sellers moved and i have no idea how to get ahold of them

A. If the dog was registrable, the papers would have been sent with the puppy.
There are many reasons that a breeder doesn't register a litter, even of purebreds. However, a litter may only be registered by the owner of the mother. A pup can't be individually registered unless its litter was registered.
IF you know the breeder's name, and the approximate date of birth of the litter, you can contact customer service at AKC to ask if they registered a litter that was whelped at that time.

What would you give a new puppy owner?
Q. What do you think is the best gift for new puppy? For their owner? I have good ideas but would like some others opinion. Not big expensive gifts like kennels, but something they might not have thought of when preparing for the puppy.
It will be coming home altered, it is a contingency to getting it, but that would be a great idea. Especially if you know what vet they use.

A. I like the first poster's idea of the personalized tag. You can also get a paw print kit, and some teething rings.

The best gift is helping them understand they can train their dog early. How about a gift card for a puppy training class?

What should I get my husband as a commissioning gift?
Q. My husband has been in the Army for 10 years. In May, he is graduating and commissioning. After 10 years of dedicated service, schooling, deployments and training, I feel like he deserves something really special. One idea I had was to ask family members to pitch in for a trip (we have been married for 4 years and never went on a honeymoon). But a trip won't fit into our schedule right now and we also have a 2 year old little boy we'd hate to leave behind. Any other ideas?

A. Maybe get him a kindle fire: http://amzn.to/zSXKGE and a gift card. Or get him any kindle. You could always plan for a trip in the future (have family chip in) and then have someone babysit your son (a family member if you feel comfortable). Surprise him with having an ebook about the destination that you are travelling to already downloaded on the book.

Hope this helps!

A. Forget about asking family members to pitch in for a trip (or anything else for that matter). It's not a gift if you solicit, it's more like a demand.

Stick with a gift from you, tie it directly to commissioning.

My suggestion would be a sword. While NCOs can wear a sword, most won't have one, and swords are typically more marks of officers anyway. He can wear it with a dress uniform, it'll also display well at home or in an office if he likes, you also can (and should) get it engraved with his name.

Link to a nice package with everything here (top brand, everything he'd need), or inquire in your base exchange.

Good luck!
