What is a good fundraising idea for a personal trip?

Q. I am trying to go on a leadership trip with my school's gifted program to Columbia University this summer. It cost around $1600 and is a 6 day trip in New York City. I just need some ideas that my friend and I can use to raise that money.

A. Grocery bagging, candy selling, gift wrap sell, and gift wrapping holiday gifts, birthday gifts,, car wash, detail car, house cleaning, cooking, babysitting, leaf raking, snow shovel, personal shopper,, chauffeur, dog walker, pet sitter, house sitter, tutor, senior companion, errand runner, fruit and nut picker, usher at local theatre.

You could call around and see who locally sponsors scholarships, and funds for academic support. Churches are good too.

And lastly .....set up a spot in a ladies room with a designer fragrance, mints, gum, kleenex, and stuff.... if a club will allow. Don't forget to take all the paper towels and make us pay for free stuff lol.

Seriously good luck on your job search, and continue to stay focused in school.

What is an appropriate thank you gift for someone who let me stay in their apartment in New York City?
Q. I traveled from out of town to spend two days in New York City. The lady and her cousin were friends of a friend and they let me use their apartment as home base and showed me around the town a bit. I'd like to show my appreciation. I already bought them lunch but thought a card and a gift would be in order as well.

A. A gift or gift card is a good idea. If you are going to get a gift card, make sure the store is close to them. As you know, most of us NYC folks don't own cars. If they live in Manhattan, having to truck out to Brooklyn to use the gift card may be more trouble than it is worth. An Amazon gift card is a good choice.

What would be a fun gift is local goodies from your hometown. Is there anything special that they may not be able to get easily here that you can get at home? I'm thinking something like See's chocolates if they are sweet eaters.

Something consumable is better than something that will take up space.

Also be sure to write them a thank you note. Tell them what you thought was extra special about your trip. Share a favorite memory. Gifts come and go, but they seem like caring people, knowing that they were able to show you a great time will make them happy.

What is a gift for a friend in the Czech Republic?
Q. I want to get her something that is special and preferably something only available in America. I live in NC, but may be going to New York City over Christmas break. Any ideas? Also, it needs to be somewhat light because i want it to be affordable to send.

A. It depends on what your relationship and spending limits are. If you are just friends, I would aim for something from NC. You know, the touristy stuff, maybe a nice sweatshirt with the state symbols or something along those lines. If there is anything your region is known for, try to go for something that relates to it. For example a friend of mine sent me a bottle of olive oil that was made at the farm she worked at.

How do I tell my dad that we're planning a surprise trip to New York?
Q. My dad's favorite place in the whole world is New York City and my mom and I are scratching our heads in terms of how to tell my dad! Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!

P.S. I'd like to tell him in a comical way! Thanks!

A. You could order a NY style pizza and put a note in the box or something. Or call a radio station and dedicate a NY-themed song to him. If he hates any NY sports team then get him an item from that team as a gift. Make up fake tickets to something that he actually wouldn't want to do/see there. Or you could make a cheesecake and hide a note inside the cake. Probably want to laminate that first though. Good luck with the ideas.
