Cool, unique gift ideas for friend who is expecting baby boy?

Q. I don't wanna go the usual baby Gap route, I like how Angelina dresses her kids, trendy but cute. Also looking for any additional DIY things I can make for the baby shower.

A. I think you should make a really cool personalized "Baby Book". Normal baby books from Target/Babies r Us are all exactly the same, and they are all pretty average. There are pages that never get filled out, things you want to put into the book but can't seem to find the right page...etc. Here's what I did for a friend's shower and she LOVED it.

Take a 3 ring binder and decorate it any way you choose. Then get baseball card page protectors, regular page protectors, photo page protectors..etc....get her some construction paper and a stack of index cards. Then you can cut the index cards in half and write down anything you want and just slide it in the baseball card sized page protectors. It's SO easy to forget the little things and when it's so easy to grab an index card and jot the memory down there's no excuse!

I am planning on making those for all future shower gifts b/c it was such a big hit. The new parents can write down little things like the first words, the first time they slept through the night, the first time you got a real smile, laugh..etc... and it's really cool.

Good luck though, there are lots of other good ideas too!!

What is a good gift for my 2 year old daugther's birthday?

Q. Need a lot of gift ideas from cheap ($10 or so) to about $50 -- lots of family coming to the party.
She likes stuffed animals, but she has way too many of them. She also likes little play balls and loves to color.

I'm not a big fan of "character" toys, and would probably return anything "character".

A. bubbles with non-spill holder, wooden blocks, something for the balls to ride on (like a track that's flat on the floor), alphabet or number foam play mats (they're like a big puzzle), books with hidden pictures under flaps, chalkboard or whiteboard with chalk and erasable markers, Magnadoodle

How about some Little Tikes toys?
a basket (and small ball) for her to shoot her balls into ($29.99):

What to get for family Christmas presents?

Q. Can anyone give me some ideas for good Christmas presents for the following family members? (Budget is $50 AUD)

1. Couple in mid 40's
2. 13 year old girl
3. 15 year old boy

They have everything they need, so I am just looking for some gift ideas (maybe nice soaps, perfumes, clothing etc)

Thank you for helping out!

A. Greetings.

I am so glad you have asked this question. I have simply been DYING to answer a question like this. As this is my specialty, I am expecting best answer.

A couple in their mid-fourties do like very different things, I suggest getting the wife a nice soap and bath salt pack or a nice smelling perfume etc. For the man perhaps a casual T-shirt or some nice sunnies. Unless of course they are lesbian/gay I would not know.

The 13 year old girl, perhaps some nice jewelry or perfume or clothes. They seem to be ravelled up in popularity and wanting good presents. I suggest getting her something she will actually like.

15 year old boys, are often easy. I suggest clothes, or a nice colonge. They never expect much, but always like a nice suprise. Probably get him something he can keep for a while.

Hope I helped, I know I did.

What kind of xmas gift to get for him?

Q. I want to get a special friend of mine a gift for xmas. He already sent me a gift in the mail all the way from AZ to MN! It was a diamond past present forever necklace and earrings, along with candy and erasers. Don't ask why. lol Anyhow, what ideas can you give me to get a 15 year old boy for around $10-$20 dollars?

He just moved to Arizona this year and lives in an apartment. He is into the Wild(hockey team) Modern Warcraft, Snowmobiling and lots of boyish things. so thanks!
(: please include thougtful things.

A. This a bit tricky, coming after Christmas & all. Also, you might have to consult someone in his family to see if it's something he already has or not. So, I would suggest for now you get a great blank card that he'd enjoy having forever on a bulletin board in his room. You'd write your thank you note in the card. It could cost about $4. You'd hint at whatever is the "why" for his selection but still is something that if somebody else got nosy & read it, it would still be okay. You'd say that receiving his gift made you think about whatever that you did together. Such a card should be related to his interests. Could be in a health food store or another small shop. You might see one or more large magnets to mail with the card. The health food store where I go has magnets, calendars, candles, wool hats with flaps from other countries (very much in style here for college students), socks, & gloves. Some of these would be cheaper in dept. stores, but sometimes I see something special & get it, like buying myself several magnets that I liked this year.

That would buy you time to shop for either his birthday or Valentine's Day & to consult with his mother or whoever if needed or to get info directly from him without him realizing it. Still have his dog? (if he had one) What posters do each of you have in your rooms? What books he likes? Has he bought that book he mentioned before? Just normal info you could share via email or texting. The risk is that you would spur him on to go ahead & buy that book. (groan!)

Suggestions for the future:
Poster related to his interests; framed or not
paperback book--allows tons of choices, since he has several interests. Could even be a book of Far Side comics or whatever.
Decorative stone. I'm thinking heavy & wide like a paperweight for a desk, bookshelf, or dresser. Maybe black & brown striped. Hope you get what I mean as I have an image of one that's maybe 3" high & 4 or more inches wide. Could be in a store that has accessories for the home like things that adults might buy to go on mantel, shelf, or coffee table. Could be in a hobby shop or gift shop.
Model kit of a war plane or similar war craft. Again, it would be in a hobby shop.
Incidentally, one time I bought a Star War's R2D2 with movable legs on a heavy chain for a necklace. Most likely you won't see that now, but there might be something else.
Bookends from a hobby shop or from a home furnishings store. These can be attractive or related to hobbies. When I was a teen I had bookends that were made like a ceramic dachshund cut into 2 halves. Would be heavy to ship. Check out the office supply stores to see if they turn up anything interesting that might be lighter but unusual. Could use metal bookends to hold the books with the ornamental ones outside of those.
Aside from home furnishings stores, gift shops, department stores, & import shops might have some of these things, too.
T-shirt or sweatshirt related to interests if you can find out his size. Could be with a design such as a rock group, a TV show or his favorite hockey team, or a snowmobile theme, or just something you like. Soon they will be coming out with spring colors for clothing. I bought a couple in spring colors for myself from the men's dept. of Target when they had a preseason sale one year. I've also bought very soft T-shirts form K-Mart. You're not really supposed to buy clothes for a guy that is just a boyfriend, but maybe there's an exception for Tees & sweatshirts.
Frisbee. The really good ones might be glow-in-the-dark or the Frisbee original classic, around $10. If he has a dog, he might like the soft Frisbee made especially for dogs.

As far as shipping something heavy is concerned, get in line at the post office & consult with them when you have something in mind but haven't bought it yet. When my mother was still alive & I was shipping stuff to her several times per yr (Christmas, Mother's Day, & birthday), sometimes I called a nursery in her town to have a plant delivered. Other times I got one of those slim Priority Mail boxes & then was often lucky enough to find a book and/or other items that fit in it. If it's not heavy, shipping would be even cheaper in their lowest price Priority Mail paper envelope that is one price regardless of weight. I say "not heavy" because you wouldn't want the envelope to rip. What you do is to wrap the item & then place it in the envelope or box.

Hope this gives you at least one idea that you like out of all of this.

What should I get for my teacher for Christmas?

Q. I don't know what to get my teacher for Christmas. My Christmas break starts on Saturday (Dec.17.2011) and so I need to get an idea in the next hour. Please something, inexpensive, and something men would like. Please no bathroom/kitchen gifts. Thanks.

A. My personal slant would be to not buy a mug (because everyone always winds up with so many more mugs than we could ever use) or anything related to teaching (because all teachers always get teaching items every year and how much of this stuff can you use or appreciate).

I do think that gift cards are nice - especially ones to Starbucks or to a bookstore, or like the other answer, one to a shop reflecting his/her hobbies or pets.

Merry Christmas!

Can someone give me a summary of the Whale Rider book?

Q. i need one by tomorrow. i really need help. Please!

A. description-
Eight-year-old Kahu, a member of the Maori tribe of Whangara, New Zealand, fights to prove her love, her leadership, and her destiny. Her people claim descent from Kahutia Te Rangi, the legendary "whale rider." In every generation since Kahutia, a male heir has inherited the title of chief. But now there is no male heir, and the aging chief is desperate to find a successor. Kahu is his only great-grandchild--and Maori tradition has no use for a girl. But when hundreds of whales beach themselves and threaten the future of the Maori tribe, it is Kahu who saves the tribe when she reveals that she has the whale rider's ancient gift of communicating with whales.

my ideas......
This is going to be another review featuring heavy reference to the movie about the book... just so's you're warned. In my defence, there probably aren't very many people around who read the book before seeing the movie, and they're likely all in NZ - the book was never even published in America before the movie, so at least I'm not alone.

Anyway, I was tickled (yes, tickled!) to find out that this was actually written in NYC, and in part inspired by a whale coming up the Hudson in the 80s. From NZ to NY... so I like identifying with authors, shut up.

Right. The book. The story has a bunch of extra stuff in written form (compared to the movie), and the narrator, Kahu's uncle Rawiri is a particularly nice one of those. He's an engaging character - both sympathetic and amusing (as with Pounamu Pounamu, one of the most fun things for me about Ihimaera's writing is how funny he can be), and he grounds the main plot well. I have a thing for stories where the narrator is only a peripheral character to the main action, so that's probably part of the appeal.

There's also far more context in the book - of the tribe, of the place of Maori in New Zealand culture as a whole, of the whales. The passing reference to Pacific nuclear testing and Muroroa gives away the period it was written (so 80s, and so very very kiwi to throw that in there), but on the other hand, the title character, Kahu, is less rich than Pae in the movie. I have a new appreciation for just how amazing Keisha Castle-Hughes was in the movie now, as well as the grandfather (who I can only remember as 'that guy who was on Shortland St [NZ soap opera:] for a while', but that describes pretty much every kiwi actor ever), because the movie was all about showing a very complex, very powerful relationship between the two characters, and the book is stuck with just telling us about it. It can't pack nearly the same level of emotional punch... but I don't think that's really it's fault (we're all just spoilt by the performances in the movie, and the difference in constraints in the two media).

It's still good, though, and it's still quite funny, touching, occasionally gut-wrenching, and even thought-provoking. Not a bad effort.

hope this will help you!!

what are some creative ideas for groomsmen gifts?

Q. I'm getting married next year and need some ideas for groomsmen gifts. I don't want to do the traditional (ie boring) flask or personalized beer mug thing. I just can't think of something more creative. My price range is about $50/person give or take. My best idea is a nice pocket watch but that's what my sister and her ex did for their wedding so I'd like to do something different

A. Check out capcatchers at http://www.capcatchers.com

They offer this awesome beer bottle opener that catches the cap when you open it, thats what I'm going for the groomsmen in my wedding, I think they're going to LOVE them! My FI liked it so much he got one for us! We had them personalized with their names, title, and date of our wedding.

They also do personalized glassware and beer buckets - we picked up our champagne glasses there with our names on them and our wedding date and location.

An Appropriate Wedding Gift from an American visiting the Irish Couple?

Q. I am friends with both the bride and groom (closer to the bride). He's actually from India and she's from Ireland & the wedding will be a "traditional" Irish Catholic wedding.

They've both lived in the US for the past 10 years, so it wouldn't be overly special if I brought something specifically "american" over to Ireland for them. So I was thinking of going the other route, to go with their theme of a traditional Irish Catholic wedding.

But as I am not an Irish national, nor am I catholic, what would be a good gift? Any ideas?

A. I agree with the two people up there. Give them something that is useful. Most Irish/Catholic stores have great gift ideas! A horseshoe with an enscription on it would be kind of neat; or anything basically that the bride and groom could have to remember their wedding day. Practical is nice (anyone can buy a blender); but sentimental is better! But before you go to all the trouble to find a Irish/Catholic store, give yourself a bit of a break! I'm sure something that MEANS something and is from the heart, would be just as good! Goodluck! <3

What kind of gift to get my artistic boyfriend?

Q. I already got him a leather sketchbook for Christmas, now I'm combining his birthday and valentine's day gift (since they're a week apart) and get something REALLY nice for him. My budget is $110-$150. I was planning to get him a drafting table, but there is no where to put it and I scratched that idea out. I'll get him an xbox 360 game as a last resort or as part of the present.
Any ideas as to what to get an artistic fellow?

A. tickets to an art show or gallery maybe? or go to the nearest art museum

What do you get them and how much you spend on daycare kids for their birthdays and christmas?

Q. I have just opened up my daycare and I want to know what to get daycare kids as gifts. How much money should one daycare provider spend on a child for their birthday or christmas gift. Any ideas would be great thanks,

A. I am a daycare provider ans I usually spend about $10.00 for birthdays and Christmas. Sometimes less if it's something the child will really like. I also spend about that much on the child's parents. Last year I took some really great pictures of the kids and then bought pretty frames and gave that to the parents....they love it.
Anyway, don't forget that a certain amount (I think up to like $20) is tax deductible for gifts given to your clients.

What are some good ideas for stocking stuffers and Christmas decorations?

Q. This is the first Christmas my husband and I are having together and I haven't decorated for Christmas for as long as I can remember. My family never really decorated after my parents got divorced and I never helped before then because I was too young.

My husband and I are decorating this year though, and other than the tree and lights, I really can't think of any other good ideas. I know he will have a few, but I want as many ideas as I can get.

Also what are some good ideas for things to put in stockings, because I want to do that this year too and I've never had one before. It's just me and my husband and our cat. No children.

Any ideas you have would be helpful. Thanks.

A. Depends on your budget...

We're having our first family Christmas since my father died (August), so we're thinking about having Christmas at my house instead of my mother's.

For us, the real memories come with the traditions and the handmade things...I've embroidered stockings for everyone in the family, my mother made the tree skirts we use...we still put up the little silver aluminum tree my grandmother bought for $1.98 in the early 1960's...and every "after Christmas" we go to the Hallmark store and buy 1 ornament for each of the kids (I usually get one or two for myself).

The best part is for you and hubby and kitty to go shopping together (try a pet store that allows pets to come in!). Think outside the box - how about one of those cool cat climbing/nesting things that are tall - you could hide kitty treats in it and new kitty toys...and decorate the climber with garland and unbreakable Christmas balls (kitty will love playing with them!).

Whatever you want in your stockings - you could be risque and go to an adult store and get all sorts of interesting things...or you could hint to hubby that you want lots of sparkly things, like earrings and so forth, in yours....cologne, aftershave, soaps...or be a kid, and buy silly stuff, like a slinky, silly putty, yoyos, whoopie cushions, wind up toys or race cars, kalidescopes, tops, jacks....gift certificates to a day spa....cheesy little pocket books that they display on the checkout counter of the bookstores at Christmastime...candy, fruit, nuts....mice (for the kitty)...basically, anything you run across that will fit in the stocking!

Other decorations than tree and lights....

Well, one year, my aunt did a tree for each room in her house, with a different theme...another year she did the whole house in teddy bears...

there's the requisite wreath for the front door (back door optional), a seasons greetings welcome mat, some jingle bells for the doorknobs....

Outdoor decorations - just go to WalMart and look! Animated reindeer, spiral light trees, nativity scenes, giant blow up snow globes and santas and grinches and snowmen

indoors, fix the guest bath up with seasonal towels, soap and lotion dispensers, tissue boxes, and Christmas scented air fresheners or candles

for the formal dining table - mix crystal and silver pieces with fresh cut or silk greenery and use lots of candles and throw in some pretty ribbons and bows

Get a copy of Martha Stewart Living for December for some great ideas...even previous year's issues....or go online to marthastewart.com

Try some of the other home decorating and women's magazines as well, like Better Homes and Gardens, Ladies Home Journal, Real Simple, Architectural Digest

Another great place to shop for Christmas items - your local pool and patio store - for Christmas, they usually restock the entire shop in indoor and outdoor decorations!

And don't forget the Advent Calendar!!!

Have a very Merry Christmas and I hope you have many, many more!!

What is a good idea for invitations for a cultural gathering?

Q. I need to make creative invitations for a party in the college office at my school. It's a small gathering [like 30 people]. I am being graded on my work. We're having a potluck and gift exchange. I need help!

A. Wrap around the World; Make a ribbon or gift wrap or ballooned themed card or flags of many countries and serve "wraps".
Using Large Flour tortillas:
Canadian wrap: smoked salmon cream cheese with a sour cream, cucumber and dill sauce within
Latin American Wrap: beans, rice and corn with a mango lime salsa
Mediterranean Wrap: Lamb meatballs in tomato sauce with feta cheese.

Using large rice papers:
Thai Wrap: Chicken, peanut sauce, cilantro, bean sprouts, rice noodles
California Wrap: avocado, shrimp, salsa and alfalfa sprouts

Japanese Wrap: Nori wrapped around rice and fish with wasabi and pickled ginger
Chinese Wrap: Egg rolls with plum sauce

Japanese culture has a gift wrap called a "furoshiki" which is a piece of fabric with a picture on it. It is used to wrap gifts. They are so beautiful that they are as nice as the gift. You could do a Japanese theme for your part, using Japanese food for your food contribution and making origami animals and all sorts of clever things for the invitation cards.

Any ideas for a brief engraved message on groomsmen gifts?

Q. I am getting married in a few months and want to put a little bit of a personal touch on my groomsmen gifts. They will be engraved and will need to be short (like 5 words or less). Every groomsmen gift I've ever received for participating in a wedding just had my initials on it. I want to do something a little different.

A. How about "thanks for being there" it is a dual sentiment like thanks for always being there for me and thanks for being my groomsman. "You are truly a great friend", "Friend's like you are priceless" or "Friends to the end". Hope this helps and congrats on your marriage.
