What fathers day gift would be permitted on a plane that is inexpensive and nice?

Q. My two sisters and i need to get a fathers day gift for my dad, but we are going to be on the plane with him tomorrow. So we need to get something that he can bring with him. Any suggestions? He never asks for anything. He likes Techno but we always get him weird dance music. Any input is great

A. In addition, or in place of any gift, make a list of the reasons why you appreciate him. Perhaps have it inscribed on a wall plague.

Please don't get a joke card. In my 20+ years of working with fathers, it has been rare that a joke card that makes fun of his abilities is really appreciated.

I wrote this to "Dear Abby" for Father's Day, March 19, 2005.

APPRECIATION FOR JOB WELL DONE IS WHAT FATHERS WANT TO HEAR

DEAR ABBY: Today is Father's Day, so why don't we try to do more for dear old Dad than give him the usual greeting card that promotes the idea that all dads are imbeciles, followed by a collect call to see what he thought of the card. (Father's Day is the day when the most collect calls are made.)

We should treat our fathers the way we treat our mothers on Mother's Day and show them we appreciate them for being there. Yes, you probably tell your father all the time that you love him, but the minds of men work differently. Anyone can say "I love you," but as men, knowing that we are appreciated for a job well done is what really gets us teary-eyed.

Something else you can do -- especially you sons out there (but daughters can do it, too) -- is to make sure Dad has been to the doctor for a checkup, including depression screening. This can go a long way toward making sure he's here on Father's Day next year.

I wasn't raised by my father, but by a stepfather. Although we did not see eye-to-eye on many things, I would not be the person I am today if it were not for him. This man, who spent years climbing on top of heavy construction equipment to prepare the ground for many of the homes, businesses, roads and highways of Southern California, now finds it difficult to get into a car. Although none of the houses or roads have his name on them, they are all testaments to his life and the lives of men like him.

So today, let's do something extra for Dad, without him pulling out his wallet to pay for it. -- George McCasland, Overland Park, Kansas

Remember, there's a lot of us fathers sitting in nursing homes whose children live too far away to visit. Contact an activities director about volunteering Sunday morning. Read a list out loud about why you appreciated your father.

What will we do when the unemployment checks , the retirement checks, the social security checks bounce....?

Q. because we are broke?

A. American Woman, don`t worry yourself about these matters; we have Obama in the White House, he has every little detail under his control. He will make sure that he borrows a couple of trillions from China to cover all of those checks & simply add it to our national debt. The anointed one will have his health insurance take care of all that stress that is going to make you sick.Plus, he is going to extend unemployment benefits all the way to 2012, isn`t he a wonderful guy? Just think about it, if you lose your job Obama will take good care of you for the next 2 years. Oops, I`m sorry, I just remembered that Obama`s health plan will not treat anyone until 2014, I wonder how many Americans will be able to live long enough to enjoy this wonderful gift that the great Obama has bestowed upon us. Oh no, I just remembered something else, China will not lend Obama anymore money, I wonder why they pulled Obama`s credit card, after all he`s such a wonderful person, he`s not a dead-beat like other peolpe I know. I guess we may have to move in with Mr. Obama at the White House, I`m sure he will welcome us with the biggest smile & arms wide open. Mr. Obama is such a wonderful person. Wait a minute, I just remembered that those pesky Republicans don`t want Mr. Obama to borrow the billions necessary to cover the cost of his unemployment benefits, they want him to cover it with budget money. Rats, I just remembered another thing & this one is a bit scary, we may not be able to move in with Obama, at least I`m having second thoughts because I saw a mouse crawl right in front of Mr. Obama`s feet. & you know what they say about rats, if there`s one in your house there are probably 10 to 20 or more hiding around. There are also a bunch of unruly flies all over the White House, they even land on Obama`s face a lot of times, maybe they are just giving him some fly kisses, yeah, those flies must also worship Mr. Obama, that`s why they can`t resist kissing his face, they`re in such awe with his presence. But the worst thing I remember is that there are a bunch of bees that will sting you if you dare to approach the White House & I`m allergic to bee stings. Unless Mr. Obama gets rid of those bees I will have to go somewhere else; boohoo, oh woe is me. Say, come to think of it, maybe ther`s some money to be made with those bees, flies & mice. Why, maybe this idea can help Mr. Obama in reducing the national debt. So many people are afraid & concerned over that huge debt you know. But if Mr. Obama likes this idea he will have everyone at the White House rounding up all of those flies, bees & mice. Then he can sell every single one of them for a thousand $ dollars a piece on E-Bay. This sale could generate trillions of dollars for our Treasury, you know Mr. Obama is so popular & people just fall over themselves in his Presence, they will sell their grannies, mamies, children, even their family jewels just to get one of those little critters that constantly surround Mr. Obama. Imagine having one of those little mice that have rubbed against Mr. Obama`s feet, cuddling in your arms & since they lived with Mr. Obama they will become famous & very valuable. You could also imagine one of Mr. Obama`s flies kissing you all aver your face & you will say, "Wow, I can`t believe that this little fly that has kissed Mr. Obama all over the place is now kissing my face." Your friends will be so jealous that you were able to buy such a wonderful pet, considering that the economy is so bad, but in the other hand the money spent on buying even just one of these lovely critters will infuse the economy. Now those bees are not only famous & priceless, they can make lots of honey which you can sell for about $20. dollars per ounce; & if Mr. Obama lets you stamp his image on each jar of honey they will sell like hot-cakes; (whatever they may be) & you could even raise the price to $50. dollars an ounce. Can you imagine how much money we could earn selling honey made by Mr. Obama`s lovely bees? We could make millions, I will have to pay someone to tend them because I`m allergic to them & Mr. Obama will come down to congratulate me for helping him create more jobs; & after his appearance at my honey plant, people will buy even more honey. What do you think we could name the honey?; "Obama`s Honey", "Honey-Bama" "Anointed Honey", " Miche-Bama", yeah I think we could include Michelle on the name or do you think that would be a bad idea? A lot of people still remember that little slip she had about when she was so proud of our country. Nah, I think we should stick with Mr. Obama`s image, after all no one gets a tingling feeling going up their legs when they see Michelle, only Mr. Obama can produce such a miracle.

LOL, I just couldn`t resist myself, I hope you can laugh a little when you read this post, I almost went into a laughing fit writing this answer.
May God continue to bless you.

do you know of any good mystery books that have some sex scenes in them?

Q. I am looking for a really good mystery book that has some erotic scenes in it. Im dont want a erotic novel that has a horrible story line. Im just looking for a good mystery book.
thanks

A. !!!I highly recommend the fever series by Karen Moning
***The first book of this series is DarkFever. MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.
When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….
As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands. . . .
This series is really really good. It's like a jigsaw puzzle that you have to piece together. It will keep you thinking and wondering :) It's full of suspense, action, drama, and a touch of romance. You will love it

What would be some good gifts for a Japanese 13 year-old boy?

Q. I live in Baltimore, Maryland and a 13-year old boy from Kawasaki, Japan is staying at my house for 2 and a half weeks. I need to get him several gifts, but unfortunately I don't know anything else about him. Does anyone know any general gift ideas? Would something Baltimore-themed be good, or tacky?

A. That's a tough one... typical japanese boys of those age nowadays are into games and mangas of their own country.

If you can at least find out what sort of sports he follows, it would make things little easier. Like, if he follow baseball, then something to do with Ichiro (Seattle Mariners), Daisuke Matsuzaka (Boston Red Sox), or any of the Japanese baseball players would be good. If he follow football, then something to do with David Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy) might be cool.

A. There is a fairly new, and little known of, web site called freecycle.com. Their only mission is putting people together, in the same community so that they can help one another. You simply go to the site, find your community, sign up, and tell people what you have to give away, and things that you need.

You will be surprised how many people are willing to help when it is for someone in their own towns. Please try it out. I love it, and have met new friends in the course of giving and receiving. The ONLY condition to signing up is that your first post must be an offer.

Offers cover everything.....4 wheelers, clothes, books, beds, toys, pets, dishes, fencing....you name it. Please try them out, you'll be glad you did.....

Merry Christmas and God bless

I know it's early but....?

Q. we have 4 kids. One 8 yr old girl, a 7 yr old girl, 5 yr old boy, and 3 yr old girl. We start buying Christmas gifts early so it's not an overload financially in December. We are looking for UNIQUE gifts because they have way too many damn toys (not from us, I can promise you that), lots of books, computer games, movies, clothes, etc. What do you get the kids that have everything (it feels like.) We need unique ideas and are really into things they will learn from as well. Most their toys are educational, as well as their computer games, and books. We would like to keep that trend. So.....any suggestions??? Id appreciate them!

A. Give tickets to the zoo, aquarium, museums, places like that. Also, magazine subscriptions are great, depending on what each child likes, get each child their own subscription. Kids love getting mail, and many of the magazines for kids are educational, like National Geographic for Kids, Highlights for Children, etc. When I was a kid I used to get this packet in the mail every month, it would have a book, a craft, and several other activities, like word finds and fact sheets about different things. My Mom subscribed to it for me and it came in my name, which I loved. I don't know if they still have anything like that, but I remember I loved getting my little package every month more than I loved most toys.

What do you give the man that has practically everything for Christmas?

Q. I have a wonderful, hardworking husband. He never asks for anything. In fact, when I ask him what he tells me to keep my money. Give me a great gift idea.

A. The one gift that everyone wants and no one has enough of is time. Give your husband time. Time with you, with the guys, with the kids, with the dog, whatever. Make plans for a weekend away just the two of you and concentrate on spoiling him all weekend. Book a room somewhere, locate a nice restaurant, plan the entire weekend and then give him a card with a date and time. Sometimes the best gifts are experiences. Give him a fishing expedition for two and send him off with his best friend for a weekend. Purchase a skydiving trip. Wrap up the brochure, or a card with an explanation, he will love that you took the time to think about what means the most to him. Sometimes to have something for a person to unwrap I give them a small representation of the experience. For example, if I was sending somone on a hunting trip I would wrap up a camo hat, or a fishing game for a fishing trip. Perhaps a sanddollar for a weekend at the coast, or a monky for a trip to the rainforest, an airplane for skydiving, there are a multitude of ideas. Concert tickets, theater tickets, membership to beer a month club, etc.

I hope my ideas help!

Does anyone have Christmas gift ideas for a 10 year old boy?

Q. Anyone have any fun gift ideas for a 10 year old boy that is financially disadvantaged. He is already receiving the necessity gifts (e.g. new coat, gloves, hat, clothes, etc.). Obviously, if he is in financial need he should get the necessities, but he's a 10 year old boy and allowed to want things other than those gift ideas. Can anyone think of something a 10yo boy may like for Christmas within a budget of $20-25?

A. umm.... you could get him a ball, or sport that he likes, some books, maybe the Hardy Boys?

I need a GREAT gift idea for a 3 year old autistic boy. Any ideas?

Q. My son was invited to a birthday party for a 3 year old boy. I guess they would be cousins. Anyway, he is autistic and has a mom that is very into his therapy etc... I am looking for gift ideas with links maybe? I would like to find something that will make her go wow, he could really use this. I am not really looking for toys like trucks etc... I am looking for toys that are learning toys.

Have any ideas?

A. Honestly I would ask the mother, its better to find out what type of gifts she would like for her son, especially she is very proactive in her son's therapy.

Saying that, you could look as sensory toys, educational toys, musical toys/instruments, communication games, hand puppets, wooden puzzles etc.

The toys need to be sturdy to take bit of rough handling, be colourful and stimulating enough for them be interested in playing with the toy, also make sure there are not to many parts to cause frustration, and certainly no small pieces (choking). Be careful with books unless they are thick chunk cardboard or fabric type as they wont tear/rip.

Or you could give a gift voucher to Toy-R -Us, Target etc, which means the mother can purchase something to her liking for her sons needs.

How does one give an inappropriately generous gift to a subordinate without sending the wrong message?

Q. I worked my secretary to the brink of hospitalization this year, so I feel she deserves to receive an exceptionally charitable Xmas bonus. In addition to a vintage fruitcake, I've also decided to throw in several Taco Bell coupons, good for one free Chalupa with the purchase of 10 Taco Supremes and a large soda.

I know, I know...it's a lot - which leaves me fearing that she may read too much into this obscene display of prodigality and misconstrue this as an act of affection. If that happens, I'll be left with no choice but to terminate her right before the holidays....and I *really* don't feel like breaking in a new lackey...I mean, "assistant" this 2013. Help!
@GreatGoogly: OK, so maybe she's not the most attractive beast at the petting zoo, but calling her a "troll" is a bit harsh.

A. You're in a tight spot. She may even slack off thinking you'll both share that Taco Supreme in front of a purple orange sunset. Disgusting, can't risk it. Hell, give her nothing and make her work Christmas Eve until 10pm, just so she doesn't get any ideas.

What are some simple homemade christmas gift ideas for adults?

Q. I need different ideas on what are some easy handmade christmas gift ideas that adults will enjoy for christmas time.
Any help will be great.
Thanks.

A. After seeing store bought baskets, and being disappointed in their shoddiness and poor quality, I make baskets, and varied them by theme according to each family. It got quite expensive last year because it was my first time, but this year I am picking up wicker baskets at thrift stores such as The Salvation Army and Goodwill.

1. Bring baskets home. Line up in the bathtub . . . turn on shower with warm water over them to remove the dust. Place them out in the sun to dry, and air.

2. Silver, gold, red, and green (or whatever color you like) paints and lovely 2" Christmas ribbon can be picked up at Dollar Tree for $1.00. It is embossed with gorgeous designs. Make sure to keep in the mind's eye how that ribbon will coordinate with the colors you have chosen to paint your baskets, or leave them natural.

3. Filler ideas:

Edible Ideas: home baked cookies, fudge, breads . . . a pretty mug stuffed with individually wrapped teabags, a pound of good coffee, beef jerky, summer sausage, nuts, chocolate covered pretzels, fruit, etc. Also candies and cookies that you find at a reasonable price such as Target, Tuesday Morning, local dollar stores etc.

Luxury: Bath mitt, bubble bath or oil, loofah sponge, scented soaps, lotions, bath salts (that can be made with epsom salt, and essential oils.)

Kitchen: pot holders, oven mits, homemade cookie mix, dishtowels, etc.

You can also tuck in a farmer's almanac, crossword puzzle books & dictionary, pencils, manual sharpener, a favorite magazine that the recipients would enjoy, but would normally not splurge on for themselves. I found so much pleasure in making or finding items to go in my baskets.

The possibilities are almost endless regarding the themes that can be used . . . gardening, makeup, shut-ins, etc.

Last year when I delivered my baskets to my family members they were surprised, and I could tell that they enjoyed the fact that I had put time into their gifts. I had placed a 2008 farmer's almanac in my oldest brother's basket last year. He said he started to buy one, but saw the cost, and did not . . . so he was obviously pleased. The beautiful baskets were placed in prominent places where family and holiday visitors who dropped by could rummage through the basket, and find some goodies to nibble on. After the holidays, they own a pretty basket that can be used for fruit, etc. next year.

Anyway . . . I hope this helps.

What should I get my mom for christmas?

Q. I need ideas on what to get my mom for christmas. She really likes the nicer gifts, but I really don't want to spend a fortune. she likes things like designer clothes, bags, and accessories. She also really likes jewelry and kitchen gadgets. Could you give me an idea and maybe a specific item too.

A. You could go to Kohl's and get her a top. Or you can go to like a Walmart and get some PJ's. There's also Claire's. Get any jewelry that looks like something she'd wear (Necklaces, Earrings- if her ears are pierced, bracelets) ALSO, a prepaid gift card from American Express is a GREAT gift. You can put whatever amount you want on it and just give it to her (you might want to tell her how much is on it though). You can also go to Walmart, Sears, or Meijers to get some new knives, a food warmer, a new cookie sheet, some new silverware, stuff like that. Or a new wisk. Those break easy, so she may need one.

What are some gift ideas to bring for sponsored kids in Guatemala?

Q. I'm visiting them next month. A 4 year old boy and a 16 year old girl... Any ideas?

A. The teen girls here like the same things the teen girls like anywhere. That should be easy. Clothing is big, especially Hollister and American Eagle. You'll be a hero if you produce a lightweight jacket or t-shirt from one of those brands.

4 year olds are about the same. Candy, especially suckers seem to be the thing here for little kids. They call them bon-bons. Little boys here also like toy cars and trucks, the little girls like dolls.

Hope that helps.

60th Birthday Gift for the Mom who has everything?

Q. My mom's 60th birthday gift is coming up and all the kids are pooling together about $800-$1000 to get her a really nice gift. The problem is the woman has everything!!! Any ideas on a unique and meaningful gift we could give to her on her birthday? Thanks!

A. A 60th birthday is a milestone and you guys have a good budget to work with.

Is there a show in another city that she might like to? Perhaps a weekend away for her and someone else to see the show (tickets included).

Or is there something she has always wanted to do? For example learn to ballroom dance? Lessons might be an idea...

There is a company called Red Balloon Days in Australia that have some fantastic experience based gifts that might help you with some other ideas about what you could do for your Mother closer to where you are.

For a milestone birthday for my now husband, I arranged a limousine to pick him up with his favourite cold beers and had him dropped to the harbour where we took a harbour cruise together before dinner with friends. He loved it and will always remember it because it was an experience.

Good luck!
