Gift ideas?

Q. Hi,

as I will soon be in Korea again, I was wanting to ask all of you what kinds of gifts would be nice to bring for my girlfriends family?

I have some ideas already in mind, and my gf has also suggested things too, but just want to know from this community, what you think would be good ~^^

please keep the suggestions to 'airplane friendly' items, and things that a Korean family would appreciate^^ Thx!

Cheers ~ M.
Hi,

The gifts will be for her mother, sister (& sisters husband), and brother.

Her sister is older then me (30), and her brother is younger(22). I'm 27 in case you really wanted to know :P

Thx ~ M.

Answer
One point not mentioned, though, and it's a big point here in South Korea; this is true, especially if the gift receiver is senior to you in age. Although it's not spoken, the idea is conveyed to gift-givers that -

the expense of the gift bears a direct relation as to how sincere the gift-giver is.

In short - the more expensive, the more sincere.

The suggestion of Alcohol is the most common gift that is given, especially if it's imported from outside the country.

Believe it or not, Imported vs. domestic also bears a direct relation as to how sincere the gift-giver is.

In short - imported shows more sincerity from the gift-giver.

For example - Johnny Walker Blue Label, when it's available, can be purchased at the Camp Humphreys Class VI store for about $75.00.

Likewise, a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label, imported, could cost around 240 thousand Won in a Korean store (average $269.00).

But, a bottle of imported Wine could cost anywhere on the average of perhaps 70,000 Won for a bottle (average $79.00).

In short, which item shows more "sincerity" from the gift-giver?

Is the gift-receiver a male or female?

Honey has been also suggested for gift-giving. But the downside is this; South Korea is still considered a male-dominant society, even though thoughts are slowly changing.

In a male-dominant society, the gift of imported Alcohol vs. a gift of Honey would definitely help your chances when gift-giving to a senior in age male.

When I asked my (Korean) wife, she informed me that a gift of Honey would be considered a female gift; don't give a senior male a female-related gift.

As for gifts of food; I don't suggest that. Simply put, avoid problems with Airport Customs on your way in.

Canned-type food; I don't suggest that either. Korean people is notoriously picky when eating foreign foods, not including imported meats.

what would be good for a couples 25th wedding aniversery?
we are their friends and need ideas!
if you have any ideas of what we could get we would appreciate it very much!
please only if it would be $50 or less

THANK YOU VERY MUCH â¥â¥â¥â¥â¥â¥â¥â¥

Answer
Since the 25th anniversary is the "silver" one, a great and thoughtful gift would be to purchase a silver picture frame and have their wedding pictures re-framed in it! It would show your friends that you thought of tradition, and put time and efforts into getting their original wedding photos! (Maybe pick a frame with several picture options and use different pics from the wedding).

Another sweet and caring gift is that of star registry! Its typically cheap (around $50.00 I think) and you can name a star after them. They will give you a star map and tell you how to find their "star" struck love in the sky!

See the website Star Registry

Christmas gift ideas for my future inlaws?

Donna C

Last year, before I was engaged to my fiance I gave his family a big basket that was just filled with a variety of things that they all like. It was good and appropriate because I didn't know them too well. This year I have to step it up a notch....

I'm thinking about giving his 3 sisters (one teen 2 young adults) snuggies (those blankets with sleeves). I really think they would like it, and I don't think we're close enough for personal gifts. Any other ideas?

Also...I honestly have no idea what to give his parents. We're also not too too close, but we're working on changing that (I live 4 hours away so its taking some time). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Answer
I've got an easy out.

Your fiance should purchase the gifts for his family . . . as supposedly he will know best what they would like. He puts both names . . . his name and your name . . . on the gifts as the givers.

You do the same . . . taking care of the gifts for your side of the family. You add future hubby's name to your gifts.

My advice? In gift-giving circumstances, act like you are already married. Buy one set of gifts for each side of the family. Put both bride's name and groom's name on the gifts as givers.

By buying only one set of gifts (not two), you two can save all that extra money for the wedding.

Christmas gift ideas?

Remus Lupi

Well, about a month ago I picked up my mom a Christmas & birthday present at Best Buy. I gave her a Lady Antebellum cd for her birthday and I'm planning on giving her a Rob Thomas cd for Christmas. However, I don't have anything for my dad. I'm 14 and don't plan to spend much. My dad doesn't necessarily need clothes or many electronics. He has a camera, gps, and laptop. Plus he doesn't listen to music enough to get him an iPod. I guess electronics are out of the question. He likes fishing and hunting, but I have no idea what to get him if it has anything to do with that.

I'm also looking for a gift for a (female) friend. I don't want it to be too personal. Plus, she has a boyfriend. I don't know what to get for her and I've been thinking of getting her something because I think she's planning on buying me something.

Can anyone help?

Answer
if your dad likes fishing, maybe you could get him a tackle box or something to do with fishing. or maybe just something stupid for a joke. :-) i got my dad this little reindeer that poops out candy when you push it down. it also plays jingles bells when you shake it. lol.

for your friend, maybe if shes a girly girl she'd like a bottle of perfume. maybe she'd like a purse of a bottle of lotion that smells nice. think of something she likes to do. for example, i do bowling. last year my bff got me a little figurine of a panda bowling.

hope this helps!

Cross Country Locker Sign & Gift Ideas ?

RunningIsL

We have secret sisters for state/region in cross country.
we make them signs and get them gifts before regions & state.
any ideas about what to get my "sister" or any good locker sign ideas?
I'd like to not just give her candy but im thinking like maybe some cute gifts
as for the signs -- im thinking of writing Good Luck and putting some cool running quotes??

Answer
As far as the gift goes, the reusable water bottles are great and something she'd probably use. They're fairly inexpensive and just a good gift that runners use. For posters, just say something like push it in or something and have a sweet animal on it. Everyone loves disney too, so you could always just do a princess or something that doesn't relate to running.

Other homemade Christmas gift basket ideas?

livin life

I'm making homemade Christmas gift baskets this year. And I'm planning on making oreo bon bons, peppermint bark, puppy chow, and (possibly) chocolate covered pretzel sticks. But I'm wanting to also make something that's not sweet. Any ideas of something that is easy to make and not costly that I can add to the baskets? Thanks! =D

Answer
There is a good article on making gift baskets and what to put in them at this blog, http://kidoozy.com/blog/?p=435, it also has links to ideas for food to make too.

Have fun!
It sounds yummy already.

gift basket for boyfriend? ideas?

inlovewith

Ok, so, i know i'm starting this a little early, but.. anyway.. our 7 month anniversary is December 24th, and i want to make him a huge gift basket. His family never really had a big christmas..so he never really got a lot of gifts... but my family, on the other hand, has always had a huge christmas. and we are engaged now, and this will be our first christmas together, and i want to make him a HUGE gift basket! Any ideas on what i could put in it? (sadly, we live about an hour away from each other, and don't get to see each other too often.maybe once a month, ish.) any ideas would be great!! thanks!!

Answer
I agree with the other answers. Your gift basket should include things that he likes, things that he can use, and gift cards could never hurt, especially the ones from department stores. He could probably get the things he needs with the gift cards, or maybe for the first time, he'll be able to use them to get gifts for others, and have a better Christmas. Definitely include something that represents your union, perhaps a picture of the both of you.

Christmas gift ideas?

Q. Every year me and my friends make a present or each other and this year i have no idea what to do for their presents. They are both girls aged 16 and i have no idea what to do please help.

I have already made things like scrap books for them before.

Answer
Go to the local craft store and buy: 2 small rectangular gift boxes, 2 sets of earring hooks, assorted beads, needle nose pliers, tissue paper and coloured yarn.
Go to the local supermarket and buy: chocolate melts, coconut, condensed milk, malt biscuits and chocolate sprinkles.

Crush 1/2 packet malt biscuits and pour into mixing bowl along with 1/2 cup coconut.
Pour 125ml condensed milk into saucepan and stir in 1/2 cup chocolate melts. Stir over low heat until Chocolate is completely melted.
Pour chocolate mix into biscuit and coconut. Mix well then put in fridge for 10 minutes.
line the gift boxes with tissue paper, leaving some hanging over the edges. Place a layer of mini cupcake cases along the bottom of the box.
Use a teaspoon to scoop a small amount of mixture into your hands and roll into a ball. Drop in either coconut or chocolate sprinkles and place into cupcake cases. Alternate between rolling them in coconut or sprinkles. When done, put back in fridge for an hour. Then take out, wrap the tissue paper hanging out of the box lightly over them and secure with the lid and a big bow. Put back in fridge until ready to gift. You've just made homemade truffles!

Google "How to make your own earrings" - there are many how to's online and they're very easy to follow. You can also google "How to make your own friendship bracelets" - there are hundreds of designs to choose from. Make a pair of earrings for each friend, add a few friendship bracelets and a box of homemade truffles.

Are Super Bowl tickets an appropriate gift?

Candy

I plan on getting married in 2011. In 2012, the superbowl will be held in my state of Indiana. I am not much of football fan, but my fiance is. That is the reason why I thought it might be a good idea to get him some Superbowl tickets. My question is: Would it be tacky to get him tickets to a football game as a wedding present? The tickets (approx. $8000 or so) will also be a little more pricey than what I had originally intended on spending, about $7000 on a Rolex watch. Which would you guys rather get? He currently has a Tag Heuer, but a Rolex is definetely a step up. However, this may be the only time he will be able to go to the Superbowl in a few years.

P.S. I know I am asking many years in advance, but I have to save and budget accordingly for the appropriate gift, wedding, etc.

Answer
Super bowl tickets would be a great gift if hes a football fan, very lucky man!

Gift Ideas for a 2 year old girl & 1 year old boy?

ME

I already have some ideas... but before I go out buying stuff I am looking for a few more suggestions, just in case I missed something :-)

Answer
Two year old -- Having just spent an hour and a half playing with my 2 year old daughter and a Melissa & Doug wooden pizza set with a bunch of playdoh, those would both be a good idea. She loves to make pretend food and have me eat it and she adores playdoh. :) She also loves doll houses, babies, horses, a kitchen, making art, books and blocks. Oh, and Dora, but that's a personal obsession of hers. :)

One year old -- The best toy I got for my kids as a one year old was Fisher Price's doorframe house thing (I'll find a link and put it below). As a matter of fact, they, along with their friends, all still play with it and the oldest are 4-5 years now. Another fav was LeapFrogs activity table but they didn't stay interested in that one as long.

Gifts ideas needed for my 1 year old God-daughter?

Rae

My God-daughter turns one this year and I would like to get her something special. Any ideas??
Thanks!

Answer
I got a Noah's ark made out of wood with a lot of animals, when I was 18 months old, I still have it. It was a pull toy. I really think you should give something that will last a long time so you can play with the child on and off with it and they will develop fond memories of you. Jewelry is nice, but don't you think when they are 13 or so, they would really like it then?

I got my first pearl necklace when I was 12 from my dad and he died the same year. When my own daughter turned 12 I gave it to her.

So gifts can last a life-time and even more. Don't forget to get plenty of pictures of you and her togther with the family ... you will want to remember the moment.

When my God-daughter turned 12 I got her a memory box with a picture of us on the top with the date. But she also has a keepsake toy animal I gave her when she was 3 and said in my voice, I love you when you pushed on the heart button. I hope it will last a long time.

So think of the child's long-term memory and what you want her to eventually see in the gift you give now for the future. Money is good, but finding that special one thing can be there forever. Good luck.

gift idea?????

Q. k for work we have this secret santa thing and i got this kid that's really into baseball. thats all i know about him really haha. he likes food um yeah so we can't spend more than 10$ and i can't ask him what he wants cause it's secret haha so if you could give me some ideas that'd be just great!! thanks :)

Maybe you could find out from his friends or ask one of your friends to find out what else he likes.

Some ideas would be a baseball hat or shirt. You could always buy him a $10 gift card for a sports store or restaurant.

Hope that helps!

Thank you or Gift Ideas?

melitys

My son was recently in the hospital and the folks at work took up a collection for him. There are about 74 people that work in the office and my son is only one year old. I am looking for a way to thank them. I don't want to be generic and buy a regular thank you card. I would like to do something else...any ideas? That are not too complicated???

Answer
Thank you for putting up such a great post. It's awesome to hear about the generosity of wonderful people in you and your son's life, and you wanting to be show your gratitude as best you can.

Naturally, with 74 people to thank, nobody would begrudge you if you gave out standard thank you cards. Some other ideas:
⢠Bake or buy cookies or bring in pizza or other snacks with flowers for the break-room.
⢠Does your office need a small appliance like a microwave or new coffee maker? An air purifier for the breakroom or a mini-fridge for common areas? It might make a nice thank you gift.
⢠The "lifesaver" thank you is always a hit. You use the standard thank you card, but you go to Costco or Target and buy those bulk lifesavers and your tape it to each thank you with the words "you're a lifesaver" on it.
⢠Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or and thanking everybody and then frame it. Your boss may thank you for the free publicity if it gets in print. If you'd like, I'll post your personal letter of thanks to your everybody at your company on my website, (contact me via my website page referenced below) and you can inaugurate the page this question inspired me to put up. "Acts of Gratitude around the world." I'll post a picture and help you write it, if you like. (We get over 9,000 visitors a month and counting).

No matter what you do, any kind of thank you will be perfect. Thanks for posting this. You're story is very inspiring.

Gratefully yours,
Christy Murphy

Gift idea for a mom?

Fiona

I wasn't sure what section to put this in...so I apologize if it's the wrong section.
I have a great friend who is due any week now with her second son...her first son is about 15 months old and will soon be going through open heart surgery...this will be happening not long after she gives birth.
As far as I know she doesn't need a whole lot of stuff for the new baby (she saved everything from her first)...I just can't think of something to get her that would be helpful for her newborn and for her son going through surgery.
I appreciate any ideas/suggestions.
Thank you

Answer
Ok, if the mom doesn't need anything maybe get something for her son that is about to have open heart surgery, maybe a blanket, or a stuff animal. YOU can get the mom something with a nice saying on it to let her know you are thinking about her. My son had open heart surgery when he was 5 weeks old and my friends wrote me little says and stuck them in a jar and when I Was sad or stressed I would read them. A lot of them had quotes from the internet. Sometimes the best gifts are the ones that come from the heart and home made. Good luck and I will keep your friend and her family in my prayers, I know what she is going through. My son is 5 today and he won't need any more surgeries.

how do i get over this friendship?

Suzie

In 2011, I met a friend at church, I am in my 20s, and have social anxiety and obsessive thoughts. This woman is 40, and so is her husband and they both are kind, caring, dont gossip and possess every good quality you would want in a friend. I really wanted to be there friend. This is going to sound so abnormal, but I had been to so many churches before and the people were cold and not friendly, mostly because of my SA, and not understanding me I am sure.

My mother was a teacher, and prior to attending this church, I knew that a former student of hers and her husband went there, and this incidently was the woman I was wanting to make friends with. They just looked really nice in their facebook pictures, and being that I have obsessive thoughts I felt that they would make me feel accepted and care about me, and I could just tell from the picture they would be those kind of friends to me.

At first, they appeared so welcoming and kind like the friendship would happen, and then at times it appeared they werent as friendly, and then it would hurt me deeply, because then the thoughts would start everyone hates me.

I got to know them for about 9 months. Then they called me that they were leaving and they wanted to stay in touch and would I be interested if they kept me updating on where they attend and that our friendship would continue. The friendship has grown since then and already in this past year we have gone to dinner 4-5 times, but keep in mind they have three teenage sons and both work 40-60 hours a week, and their sons are involved in every school activity. They also call me on the phone probably every 5 weeks. I have done nice things for them too, always getting them a gift for their bday, christmas, the last time we went out to eat, I paid the bill.

I am in school, so I will be transferring to another state and they assure me that the friendship will keep on, and that they will come out and see me. Still, words can be cheap too so you dont always know their sincerity.

It bothers me that I cant tell if they are friends with me because they like me or because they feel sorry for me that I have no friends and have social anxiety.

As time is going on, I am starting to believe they are true friends, but because I have obsessive thoughts and get obsessed with people (not in an unhealthy way) but more in a way of obsessing if they like me or will hurt me. You would think I would be grateful that they appear to be friends, but now thats not enough. You know how I mentioned the church I was going to. Well several couples that attend that old church, were really nasty to me and said I was a freak under their breath, and now my obsession is on whether or not this couple is still friends with those other people.

My mind keeps harping on the fact that, I have never had any friends before, so if this couple are my friends, then they have be 10x more of a friend to these other people they used to attend church with. It made me feel special they called me after they left the church, but then I would think they probably did this for essentially everyone at the church saying they wanted to stay in touch.

My mind keeps focusing on how 2-3 of these other couples at church said mean things to me, and my mind then starts, if this couple that are my friends, are friends with them, then I cant have any respect for them, and my instincts dictate for me to end the friendship. There's apart of me that wants to end it because I feel I am going to end up hurt and another part of me that doesnt want to lose them.

What do I do? Is it possible they just called me after they left because I was sort of a new person and they didnt get to know me and wanted to pursue the friendship OR would they have called the other people two including the couples that werent nice to me?

How can you tell without asking them.

I need some gift ideas for a 4 year old boy other than some Gap clothings :) Thanks.

Answer
I think that toys they can build with are great. I would look at Lego's and lincoln logs, tinker toys and things like...Look at the age range (ex 3+) and go with something that he can use now... but grow into as well. For example: I wouldn't get the biggest Lego's(duplos or quatros)... but the smallest recommended for that age group. That way he can continue to use them for some time.

I have a 4 year old girl and she really enjoys the new version of the Erector sets. The box says 5 and up... but I think that is mainly due to the difficulty of the instructions and not safely (the safety limit is 3 and up). She may not be able to follow the directions to build the toys shown on the box... but she can use her imagination and make her own cool things.

What are good gift ideas for a 4 year old boy?

I wanted to get him a 3-wheeler for his birthday, but he will not get much use out of it being winter is almost here. I need some ideas on a good fall/winter b-day present for a 4 year old boy no more than $50.

Answer
Arts and crafts items are great for keeping young boys occupied indoors (without them being glued to a tv or computer screen). Try washable markers with a superhero cartoon coloring book, or a themed play-doh kit (like the Backyardigan's pirate ship - or even play-doh by itself), a water-color book, construction paper and glue... this list is endless. You could create a gift bag full of an assortment of these items for not a lot of $. Boys that age really love to create, explore, imagine, and then admire their handiwork!

What is a cool gift for a 4 year old boy?

My nephew's b-day party is Sunday and I need a cool gift. I don't see him very often so I don't know what he's into, but great ideas would be awsome. Thank you.

Answer
My 4 year old is into Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einsteins, and of course things like cars, trucks, trains, batman, superman, spiderman, or others super heros. Here lately he has gotten into things artististically as well. He really likes colring or drawing things too. Also, being summer it might be cool to give him outside water toys or some water guns if his parents won't flip out about it.

Sexy Men Calendar as a gift- ideas for an ironic funny cover?

Lizzie

For Christmas I've decided I want to design a 'Sexy Men Calendar' for my girls as kind of a gag gift.
However I want the cover to be misleading to what's actually inside and be a (stereotypical) turn off for men.
I've thought of making it "The Ultimate Twilight Calendar" or "The 12 Best Seasonal Dishes" but I don't feel like that's enough.

Any fun ideas?

What is an awesome gift to get for a family Christmas party?

USAman

I am going to a family Christmas party in a few weeks. I need to know of a good gift to get for the gift exchange games. It has to be for both men and women and no more than $30.00. I don't want to get a gift card.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
The age range is from 13-60's.

Answer
Wow, that's a pretty big age range.

A few ideas:
Pick up a few Christmas DVDs. They are on sale at Best Buy starting tomorrow, 2 for $20; I'm sure they're available elsewhere for good prices as well. Elf, Charlie Brown Christmas, Grinch, etc. Classics and new classics that anyone can enjoy.

Make a gift basket of gourmet cocoa (You can get tins of it at Target or Starbucks), cookies (Biscotti would be good), white-chocolate covered marshmallows (I've seen these on a stick, dressed as snowmen, sold at Target), pepperming spoons (you stir these into cocoa), etc.

You could also order a few more expensive items from Crate and Barrel--they have gourmet cocoa ($4), chocolate covered marshmallows ($7) and their own peppermint spoons (about $10)

Calendar set--buy a fun wall and desk calendar. There are so many fun and interesting calendars out there now--I especially like the Cranium calendar, which offers a different challenge everyday (writing with both hands at the same time, brain teasers, etc.) And everyone can use a calendar. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780761146872&itm=2

An Ugly doll, because they're just fun. (And you can add something in with it, since they're less than $20--a tin of peppermint bark or Christmas chocolates might be nice.)

Ladies, please help with gift ideas for girlfriend.....?

Dumpy Poof

I think I will start shopping for x-mas for my girlfriend soon.

Last year I got her:

Pair of smallish diamond earrings.

$270 spa package thing which she just finished about a month ago by using on hair and other stuff

a few other smaller gifts like cd's/movies

1. She said that she really liked the spa package from last year. Would it be alright to get it for her again this year?

2. The woman at the jewelry store said that I can double the size of her earrings whenever if I bring them in. My girlfriend said that she is not interested in this. Do you think she is being modest, or would she like larger earrings and is afraid to admit it?

3. I don't think I want to buy her any other jewelry because she already has a bunch.

I like to buy a few big gifts, and a bunch of smaller ones.

Any suggestions on what some good gifts would be?

Would a surprise vacation work. or is that too cheesy?

Answer
She sounds a lot like what i like. I love it the most when my husband gives me spa certificates & stuff. I dont like jewlery at all. But get her a gift cert to her favorite store. Does she like makeup like me? You can get her a certificate to http://www.sephora.com/ Thats always so fun to order stuff. I hate it cause i spend so much on there. I think a vacation is kind of more like an anniversary gift, but you know her, not me. If you think she likes that stuff you can get you guys a room at a really nice hotel and set it up with champaine, flowers, dinner....and a hot tub. Put candles around it & rose petals in the tub. But if she really liked the certificate get it for her again. Just ask her what she wants. My hubby gets me a $100 gift certificate to Sephora & $150 to VS. Shes a lucky one. You seem like you really love her a lot.
