Is this a lame gift idea for my girlfriend?

best gift ideas for a girlfriend

best gift ideas for a girlfriend image

Sawyer P

My girlfriend and I have been together for over five years. I have given her many pieces of jewelry as well as other common and not so common gift ideas. We have been doing it long distance for the last 1.5 years which kind of plays into the theme of the gift I was thinking of giving her for xmas this year. The gift is a personalized throw pillow on one side it is a cute picture of both of my dogs on my family's boat with their tiny dog life preservers on. On the back it is a good picture of us both on a trip Cancun this Summer, in text underneath it says "Cancun, 2012" and centered underneath that "I love you". The pillow is a light pink color that fits in with the color of her bed. I was thinking this would be nice since we do not currently live together as it has pictures of both us together and my dogs that she loves. I am worried however that this is a lame gift... I am also planning on getting her some chocolates or something along those lines and obviously a card.

What do you think, lame idea or a nice idea?

Answer
No, that is not a lame idea. That is a great gift. I think your girlfriend is going to be very happy.

What are some gift ideas for meeting my girlfriend's parents for first time?

SeanB

I am meeting my girlfriend's parents for the first time in under two weeks. I'm not a 'youngin', so I have been down this road before, but 20+ years ago.

What are other gift ideas beyond wine and flowers? For further refinement, we are meeting for dinner in a restaurant.

Answer
Hey I think you can get them something practical yet personal. For the mom, you can get her a nice pair of gloves. I recommend you check out KinaRosa on Etsy ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/kinarosa ) These gloves are handmade, very high quality. They are unique yet affordable. My mom loves the gloves. I am sure it'll be a great gift for your girlfriend's mom since it's winter time. If you are not sure what color to buy, go for black, chocolate brown or burgundy red. They are safe colors that every woman loves.

For the dad, do you know what he likes? I think it's always good to go for more practical gifts for men. If he like cigars, you can buy him a nice box of cigars. If he like coffee, get him some good coffee beans. If you really don't know what he likes, you can get him a nice pen. My dad likes pens from Cross. They are not too expensive, but they are good pens.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your gift searching!

I would like to know if anyone has some good ring bearer gift ideas. My best friend is getting married, and her ring bearers are two 2 1/2 year old boys. She would like to get them something meaningful and appreciate later on in life and not just some little kid toy. (Her wedding is in ten days, and it would really mean a lot to her if she got some good ideas) Thanks so much.

Answer
A toddler does not have the capacity to appreciate a meaningful gift. No offense, I think your friend is doing this more for herself than for them.

I say, make sure she gets some good photos with them on her wedding day. When they are older she can have these printed and framed or used in a scrapbook. Im sure when they are older they will enjoy looking at the pictures and they will see how happy they all were on that wedding day. Honestly, photos are one of the most meaningful gifts you can give a person.

When my daughter turned 1, we bought her a bounce n spin zebra (fisher price) for her birthday. She absolutely loves it! She'll be 2 in December and she still plays with it quite a bit during the day. Especially when we have guest over, she'll jump around on it just to show off!

Q. Birthday gift ideas and any other good ideas are necesary?
I need some ideas of something nice and thoughfull for my grandmother B-Day tomorrow in a couple hours any ideas? PLEASE its URGENT!!

Answer
Depends on whether you have money or not, and whether she has money, because it's harder to give thoughtful gifts to people who can buy anything.
Here are some things she might like:
* A gift certificate for a massage. A lot of older people are rarely touched. If you don't have money, offer to do it yourself. If you or she is shy, get or give her a hand massage. It's quite nice.
* Pedicure -- it's wonderful to have your toenails done, and a lot of elderly people don't take good care of their feet because they don't have flexibility.
* Offer to cook for her or take her out for a meal.
* Write her a poem about how much you love her. If you have money, buy a frame and frame it, perhaps with a picture of the two of you if you have one.
* Buy her a certificate to one of those Glamour Shots places where they do a person's makeup and then take a picture. Older women still want to be glamorous.
* If she likes to cook, buy her some really nice spices.
* If it's cold where she lives, buy her some lovely gloves.
Think about what she likes but might not buy for herself. Good luck!

There is this small detail, that I apparently get teased about how she is going to end up being a future girlfriend, and I have cleared it up that we are just friends, but good ones. She apparently already bought me a shirt, but i really dread giving any woman clothes because its so complicated and mostly they think I'm giving mixed signals or some secret message. Any ideas?

Answer
Nail polish, candles, 2011 calendar (flowers, maybe dogs or kittens), a card & wrap it all in a basket! It will be cute & she will use those items everyday if not often.
Find out her favorite colors for the polish & candles. Maybe you can find out if she likes a certain scent...
Oh! Don't forget to add a stuffed animal like a bunny or puppy. I personally like monkeys but that's your call.

What are your reading resolutions for 2011?

Dragonfly

I find the whole enterprise of New Year's resolution making extremely depressing. A have a stack of past resolutions shelved away somewhere in my mind, with other such vain ideas as discipline and persistence. But tradition compels me! So my resolution for 2011 is about books and reading, something innocuous and meager and attainable. I aim to read more non fiction.

How about you? Do you have any reading/writing resolutions? To conquer the literary greats, or perhaps your aim is to explore unfamiliar genres? More books, more diversity?

Answer
I always was an avid reader. I do love fiction but I also tackle the classics. Jane Eyre. I have a book about the Broente sister and their real life what it was like and that all of them died at such a young age from consumption and they all were talented writers. I will read that soon as it interests me. Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, I love '' the woman in white''. Jane Austen ''Sense and Sensibility'' that's my favourite of hers also was a great movie with Kate Winslet as Marianne and Emma Thompson as Elinor.

I do love a good detective story. Dame Agatha Christie definitely is one of the best female detective fiction crime writers.

I got a very useful book here which contains a lot of interesting things to know about life in general which is not fiction... it's ""LOve your life'' "Oprah Winfrey's handbook for your best today and tomorrow.. it deals with health, Diet, menopause, beauty and style, going from 'consumerism'' back to basics of voluntary simplicity. The book deals with happiness, how to get out of being ''stuck in a rut'' ''What if I'm scared of change?" Tips by Suze Orman about how to handle ones finances.
''spirtuality'' about a troubled marriage and a couples journey to a more perfect union, amazing acts of heroism, ''what are animals thinking'' (as experts now believe that animals share human feelings such as compassion and embarrassment. Pioneer families, Spousal abuse, about how to ''let the wall down'' between a son or daughter and their parents.
About starting with $ 100 and a dream and turning a modest gift into a dynamic little nonprofit, 36 scholarships, dozens of changed lives.. lots of inspirational and spiritual and some practical things to know all in this one book...

What are some good baby shower gift ideas?

Ashley

My sister-in-law is having a baby shower next month and I am not sure what to get them for a gift. They registered for mostly high priced items that are out of my price range. I am looking to spend about 30-40 dollars on their gift. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
The thing I appreciated most for my baby shower wasn't the cute little onesies and thumb-sized socks, although they were adorable. My friend got me a little divided-up basket filled with things like baby nail-clippers, one of those little nose-suckers, a thermometer, etc. There was baby shampoo and lotion in it, and Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Plus some lotion and bath salts for me. She also gave me these hand-written coupons. There was on for a weekend where she would watch the baby, one to take me out for lunch, things like that. The cute clothes and stuff like that are great, but that one I got was very personal and thoughtful. I still use the basket to put diapers and wipes out in the living room so I don't have to go all the way into baby's bedroom when I'm cooking or something.

Check it out! I have many new home decor and office decor products, as well as great gift ideas for every special occasion....just need ideas as to how to market this without it costing an arm and a leg....am working on a limited budget. The idea is to MAKE money with it, NOT SPEND every dime I have just to get it marketed and ranked on the search engines. If anyone out there has resources for excellent internet marketing, that is reputable, NOT SCAMS, and is easy to understand for the beginner, let me know! I know amazon.com has several books you can get, such as "search engine optimization for dummies", or "keywords for dummies"...may have to go with that for now, to save on my expenses...already put TOO much into this project to give up on it....getting several hits a day to the site, but still no significant sales....any help I can get out there would be greatly appreciated. debs3

Answer
You can do it for free no problem but it will require a little time on your part.

First you need to get two books from the library:

Designing with Web Standards http://www.zeldman.com/dwws/

Don't make me think http://www.sensible.com/buythebook.html

Reading and understanding these two books alone will put you ahead of 99.9% of webdesigners.

Then you need to read a free, reliable and up to date SEO tutorial. There are only two of these on the web that are considered worth reading.

http://www.seomoz.org/article/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization

http://www.seo-blog.com/tutorial.php

That's it! Read, learn and implement.

Good luck!

What is a good birthday gift idea for a Chinese lady boss?

best gift ideas for women
on Gifts for Mothers, Sisters, and Best Friends | RealSimple.com
best gift ideas for women image

trainee_ha

Hi, I have a new chinese lady boss who is a very nice person and I would like to get her a gift for her upcoming birthday. I havent had the time to really get to know her, so I am counting on finding some standard time tested gift ideas that I cant go wrong with. It would be preferable if the gifts have some sort of a chinese theme to it that she might appreciate.

Please help!

Answer
I'm Chinese!

As the Belarussian answerer said, you give gifts as you would any lady. However, do be aware of some Chinese gift codes:

- Most Chinese value the colours red and gold, because it is the colour of good luck
- Never give any forms of knives as a gift (e.g. letter openers, manicure sets etc) because it is perceived as a symbol of severing the friendship.
- Never give clocks, fake cash (like those rectangular notepads with dollars printed on the back of them) or white flowers--these are mourning items, and receiving them would be perceived as wishing they were dead.

Normally I don't give personal birthday gifts to a boss, but might initiate to arrange with some colleagues buying a joint gift for her. This makes the boundary clear that our relationship is business, not personal; and it avoids misinterpretation, especially in cross cultural situations.

My top picks for lady gifts are usually stuff she could wear, including earrings/bracelets, handbags, belts, perfume, or a silk shawl. However, these are very personal gifts that could be inappropriate for a boss; especially, if as your username says, you are but a trainee. Don't forget that Chinese people are very hierarchical, so receiving gifts as such may be awkward for a Chinese woman even if she is very nice.

If you really want this birthday to be your appreciation for her being part of your life, it may be best to get her a gift that she will use up and can share with her someone special. This may include vouchers to dine at her favourite restaurant, get pampered at a fabulous spa, stay at a hotel in a nearby weekend getaway spot, or enjoy an evening at the opera if she's into that thing. If you don't want to spend too much, vouchers for Starbucks or a movie would suffice. But whatever you get her, make sure you have two of them included, because (especially if you're a man) it's not as nice to receive one of these and not be able to take her someone special with. Not only is including two a sign of respect for the possibility that she may want to spend it with someone special other than you, but also two is a lucky number in Chinese numerology.

If you decide not to have a go at any of these, a birthday cake jointly bought with your colleagues to be eaten in the office/wherever you work never fails. Don't forget candles! Party hats & horns and decorations would be nice, but optional.

My mom is turning 60 in a couple of weeks. She doesn't want a suprise party... been there done that!

She's a casual dresser, retired, likes going to flea markets and watching the soaps. She doesn't collect anything right now. She used to be a seamstress. Not really into frills and prissy stuff. Loves jewelry though. The problem is she doesnt NEED anything materialistic. So I am kind of at a loss. Need some creative help from you guys. Thanks so much!

Answer
Well, if she doesn't need the jewelry, but she loves it so much, why not get one cute piece that will mean something to her? A personalized necklace is a cute and fun way to show you care and it sounds like she's love it. I found some simple but fun pendants here:

http://www.justcufflinks.com/pendants.html

I was thinking maybe the scrabble tile one with her first initial? It's not too fussy and it will get a lot of good attention. I got one for myself and everyone at my office is jealous and wants one of their own. :)

Our office is having a book exchange at our office for Christmas. We have a couple of guys but the rest (7) are women. The exchange is random. What is a good book? Keep in mind that our office is full of readers and have read a lot already. Ideas would be useful- Nothing childish or stupid please!

Answer
Hi there,

Well, if your colleagues are readers who have already read a lot, you should pick something that is not so very well known. Some ideas that would be suitable for men and women and that are not so very well known, but still very good:

- Dorothy Porter, "The Monkey's Mask" (a crime novel in the private eye tradition, but in verse - don't be put of, it is amazing!)
- Kate Grenville, "The Secret River" (an Englishman is sent to the newly opened convict colony Australia and has to decide whether he is good or evil)
- Anthony O'Neill, "The Lamplighter" (this one is a combination of thriller, fantasy and philosophy; I couldn't put it down, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea)
- Friedrich Dürrenmatt, "The Quarry" (a police officer dying of cancer seems to find out that his doctor is a former concentration camp torturer)
- Kazuo Ishiguro, "Never Let Me Go" (clones are raised merely to harvest their organs, but unfortunately turn out to be actual human beings)

I hope this'll help!
Cheers
S

My fiance and I are planning to be married in October. Does anyone have any thrifty ideas?

maery

We're kind of tight on cash. I'm looking for suggestions and ideas to pull off something nice but very reasonably priced. DIY ideas welcome as well!! Thanks!

Answer
I got married last December and did a lot of it on a budget as we were paying for it. I know that because I live in the UK how we have weddings over here may be in some way different to in the US or Australia but the principals are probably the same :)
first of all make a list of the 'must haves' - the things you have to have to make it your day; you want to do it as cheap as possible but you also dont want to look back in the future and think 'I wish we'd had....' as you can't go back and re-do it. that said, don't lose sight of what the day is about - you and your partner making a life-long commitment in front of family and friends.
For starters, we made out own invitations - buying the card, paper and decorations from ebay and online craft stores. i am not a 'crafty' person but with some practice had made something no one else would have. I got some plain card, printed the inserts on the home computer on paper sheerts and attached them using silver cord that i tied in a bow, with silver beads threaded on to the cord. Glued some red hearts and stamped the wording on the front and voila... enlist the help of friends and your partner and you're set ;) I bought the place cards online and hand wrote them with silver pen - but some people let people sit wherever so you dont need place cards and I didnt bother with a seating chart. i made the favours, buying bits from ebay, including the sweets to go inside. I also made small table gifts, which were fun 'toys' I got from ebay and wrapped in silver paper then got my sister and nice (bridesmaids) to give them out when they were seated, as an ice breaker - it was Christmas season so it seemed apt and people loved them.
My dress was a bridesmaids dress, cos I wanted a simple strapless red gown and the one I chose was just right. It wasnt second hand, it was off the peg but the shop took it in to fit me and I loved it. My hubbie got his suit and his brothers best man suit from an outlet, so that was cheaper. My tiara was from ebay, as was my bag and I bought gorgeous artificial cala lilly bouquet from ebay - bonus being I get to keep it forever - no bouquet tossing for me! :P
We had our wedding in the afternoon, straight away cutting costs for everyone, and chose a venue we could hire for free - they recoup their costs through the bar bill, food etc. I invited only family and very close friends to the wedding breakfast and went for the menu that would suit most tastes - no one will remember if you had fancy nibbles or if they had a fancy plate of something unprounounceable... they will remember if it was edible and thats about it :P
I had one free drink for each of the wedding breakfast and included in the budget wine to go with the meals, but for the toast gave the guests sparkling chardonnay and only had champagne for the top table - no one noticed the difference. I didnt have an open bar and no one expected it - its an unneccesary expense and weddings cost enough as it is, plus its not a tradition over in the UK.
I had a DJ quite cheap through the venue but the ipod idea is great and make your own cd to be played while you eat. The crockery and glasses and stuff came from the venue.
I negotiated with the venue re table decorations but i would say you dont need to go OTT with those and can make your own - no one will remember them and a couple of fish bowls with bear grass and gerberas looked really effective - in the evening they were put on the bar with tea light candles in, which are super cheap to buy from Ikea.
My photographer and I negotiated too, and I settled on a DVD only deal, which means I get all the pictures and can print out what i want when i want. I limited his time with us as luckily our venue had an in-house photogrpaher who took pictures of the evening guests, as I think its great to have pics of everyone there - but you can aks guests to give you copies of theres and may be worth putting blank recordable discs on the tables with little cards inviting people to take them home and out their pics on their then send them back to you - people really dont mind.
The cake I found via the internet - a lot of it was done over the internet because I was being married miles from where I live - but shop bought cakes can be as good and you can buy decorations to go on there from most supermarkets. I didnt have a videographer as I am camera shy but thats personal preference - i did consider hiring or borrowing a camera and asking a friend to do it.
I didnt go crazy on a honeymoon - we had a 'mini moon', which was cheaper and closer to home but no less special.
i think that covers most things.. theres also a site called 'myweddingpath' which lets you build your own pages for free, really easy to use and is a handy way for people to RSVP, get involved with the planning etc.
Good luck and have a great great day :)

My brother and his wife had their first baby a few months ago, any gift ideas? I already got stuff for the baby, but wanted to get them something, and I don't know what to get them!

Answer
You could make them a basket of things needed for a movie night in. Some new parents aren't comfortable leaving their child for awhile. So make a basket of a couple newly released dvds or gift voucher for a free rental, some packs of popcorn and maybe some candy.

If not, I agree with eveyone who said a voucher to babysit while they go out.

Is this a lame gift idea for my girlfriend?

Make a heart or a rose (or make a bunch and fill a ‘love jar’ with a love note included)

This is an idea for kids to make, but can be used by adults as well:

Laminate a photo of the two of you, made into a bookmark - so it can be a few small pics or just one, glue it to construction paper with hearts, then hole punch the top and put a ribbon of some kind through the hole and tie it off.

Make cookies:
Quick Banana Chocolate Chip Bars
1 Medium Ripe Banana, peeled
1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
¾ Cup Brown Sugar, packed
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
½ Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
¼ Teaspoon Salt
1/3 Cup Olive or Vegetable Oil
2 Tablespoons Milk
1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 Egg
¼ Cup Chopped Nuts
½ Cup Chocolate Chips (or what feels good)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray small rectangular or 9x9 square baking pan with non-stick spray.

Chop or mash banana. Combine with flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, oil, milk, vanilla and egg in large bowl. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips to this mixture OR save them to add as topping, sprinkling on top of mixture after poured into the pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Isabellas (Oatmeal Cookies)

1 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups oats
Dash salt, optional
Powdered Sugar

Cream butter and sugar until light. Mix in vanilla, then flour, oats and salt. Chill thoroughly. Shape into small balls and place 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten with a fork, crisscrossing. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-18 minutes (depending on your oven). Sprinkle with Powdered Sugar

I photographed my two nieces for Easter and gave the photos to their grandmothers for an Easter gift. I would like to do the same thing for fall, winter, Halloween, & Christmas (lol, I know that's a lot) and give them more photos as a Christmas gift this year. I would like some sites for ideas on posing them/props etc. Can anyone help me?
K, thanks! Those are some great ideas.

Answer

http://www.photographers.co.uk/html/photography-tips.cfm

but please do keep in mind that if you just let them do their thing then the best pictures will come from that like i take pictures of children just let them go to the park ect. i have the best turn out in those pictures cuz you can see that they are having fun and not just sitthing there waiting to be done..

good luck!
