Like I said in my previous question I'm considering the Vtech V.Smile V-Motion TV Learning System. But I know there are also other gaming systems out there for his age group too. I got my own almost 3 year old daughter a Nintendo DS and she amazes me how she manages every single bit of it. She loves playing games on it as well. I would personally recommend it.

At the ripe age of 1, he won't really remember much, unless you take lots of pictures and teach him later. If you're looking for the bestest, most greatest gift, trust me, he'll be sitting in the boxes, after he tries to chew on them.

what does he play with now? there will be no great change in him, so maybe just a fresh supply of things you know he's plays with. maybe something like a sand/water table, so he can stand and dump and splash.

does he like trucks and cars? maybe something he can use in a sandbox. or the thomas the train stuff. there's also cheaper copies of the wood sets. good if you don't know if he likes them.

blocks? there's tons of choices. we got a 10 piece stacking buckets toy maybe 8 years ago, and every grandkid stacked it up, kicked it over.

he probably has plenty of stuffed toys, so considering the season, maybe you can hold up on those until the holidays.

bath toys? things to use in the water. pouring things.

and you can always hold up a bit, until the next time you and son stroll through a store. birthdays are kinda overwhelming, so spacing the goodies out a bit might not be a bad idea. something small on that day, then enhance as you go.

I would just give her a gift card to Toys R Us. She will most likely be getting gifts from relatives and friends (especially if her parents have a party for her) and you have no idea what she'll get. Maybe she won't get the one thing she really hoped she would or maybe she'll get duplicates of something. I would get her a gift card and a nice card. If you want to get her something small to open to go along with it, that would be nice too.

I know people frown on giving gift cards, but I don't know a single person who doesn't like getting them!

My Friend's mom has Cancer Just before Christmas!? How do i help?

My Best Friend Krista's mom has just been Diagnosed with Lung Cancer. Her older sister Stephanie(who is a Senior in High School) is upset and doesn't speak to her friends or her Cheer-leading team (she is captain). But, Krista (who is a Sophomore as am i) is always talking with us and with her boyfriend( of 2 years). Krista is the type of person who just accepts the things God has done and tries to figure out her own way to fix it. Krista and her boyfriend Chris are Captain of the Soccer team so they got together to make a fundraiser to help with Cancer research. They made a soccer clinic at our High School for over winter break to help kids learn soccer skills (which i think is amazing and so does our Principal and their coaches). Christopher's dad passed away earlier on in the year after a 10 year battle with Cancer. Her dad is also helping out (he is great at soccer) as well as her 2 younger brothers and chris's 2 younger brothers (who are the same age as Krista's and who love soccer as well) Our whole Community loves Krista and her family, but we are confused on how to help Krista and her family during the Holiday season while she is helping out us? our friends want to get her a awesome christmas present but still don't know what? How do we help out Krista, Her wonderful parents and Older sister and 2 younger brothers (one who is in 8th grade one who is in 3rd grade)? Also do you think it is a good idea for our gaelic football team (chris's and krista's) to also raise money?

I'm single and also turning 30 this year. Hey, maybe you're my friend and this party is for me! ha! just kidding... ;)

If she's anything like me, and dreads turning 30, the last thing I want is to have people rubbing my new age-bracket in my face. Who wants to be reminded of how old they are getting when they're still single? So forego any "Over-the-Hill" type of decorations, or anything referring to "Old Maid" (I absolutely HATE that term!!!) Here are some parties that she may like:

-Honestly, I think a dinner party with her closest friends would be the best. Make reservations at her favorite restaurant and make a fun night of it. Take pictures!
-If she hates the thought of turning 30, do a "Happy 1st Anniversary of turning 29" party. Have 29 pink candles and 1 white candle decorating a white-frosted cake.
-Decorate the party like the 70's since that was the year she was born and have everyone wear 70's attire and play 70's music. Have 70's style posters decorating the room and maybe a history board of pictures of her growing through the years.
-Or if she's a fan of the 80's, throw an 80's style party, same idea as the 70's version...
-Or perhaps if she's a movie buff, have a party of "Big Movie Hits of the Last Three Decades". Have everyone dress up as their favorite movie character over the last 30 years.
-Maybe have people bring inexpensive gifts in thirty's. Thirty candy bars, thirty birthday cards about turning 30, a mixed CD with 30 songs on it, etc. Let your guests be the creative ones too.
-Murder mystery parties are awesome.
-Perhaps if you and her close friends can afford it, go on a road trip somewhere and celebrate. Vegas, Atlantic City, etc.

I don't suggest strippers or strip clubs. To me, that's fun in your early 20's. Turning 30 is a big step and the party shouldn't be reduced to something silly, unless she would like that...? *shrug*

***The most important part: Whatever you decide to do, invite men and women. If any of your guests have any potentional, great single men, bring them along! The more the single men, the merrier, right? ;)

Activities to entertain wild 8 and 9 year old boys?

I'm babysitting these out of control boys tomorrow, and I'm not sure how to entertain them. Normally we go on bike rides or something but it's too cold to go outside. I'm watching them for 4 hours and they are only allowed to watch one movie a day or 2 hours of TV and aren't allowed on the computer and don't have video games. So is there anything that I can do to entertain them? Maybe Christmas activities or something?

I say do a scavenger hunt in the house and winner gets to pick the movie.

Or put on some christmas music and do some crafts (i.e. make gifts for mom & dad or grandparents)

Or make dough ornamnets their really easy, google the recipe online. and you bake them. Once their done the boys can use paint or markers to color them. (And its like play dough they can cut out shapes or do free form stuff)

I think I would try to stay away from the gift card thing though because it seems like you put less thought into it. Most men love getting manicures even though they don't like to admit it. And pajamas are always a safe way to go and you can get a good brand for under 50 dollars. ok. well some ativities you can try are filling some baby bottles with wine or beer. and having a contest to see who finishes first.

another one that I did has buying the cheap plastic babies and putting diapers on them with ketchup, or mayonnaise, what ever as long as it feel nasty. they will have something on their eyes so they can't see. and try their best to change the diaper and put a new one on. they also need baby wipes. the guy who cleans better the baby, and puts on the diaper correctly wins.

The boys are super excited so I thought it would be fun to find some Christmas-y activities to do with them for the evening. I'm already planning on streaming a movie, probably the Polar Express on Netflix for them but I need some other ideas.

Well, ..., teach them to dance Gangnam style. My son-in-law's company did that for a bunch of kids for their Christmas party and the kids really liked it. 'Chutes and Ladders' or 'Candyland' are great games for young kids to play. The Polar Express is a great movie to watch and more than likely that will be more than enough to tire them out. You could always bake Christmas Cookies, decorate them, and enjoy them during the movie.

Definately do the homemade idea. Cash talks...and since a good portion of tattoo artists can be flaky its best to have it on hand and not a gift certificate that has already been paid for. Think about it. The artist has already been paid if you have a gift certificate....it would make much more sense to him to book someone when he can still make money. Sounds bad and I am sure all artists are different but its how it works most of the time. In regards to how much $$$ to give as a gift, it totally depends upon the tattoo. As little as $50-75 to cover a shop minimum...or A couple grand for sleeve. Figure $100-150 an hour for a good artist.

I’m not sure if I posted this in the right section, but I want to buy my mom a house for Christmas of 2010, but I really don’t know all the ins and outs that I think I should be aware of before buying a house. Like back taxes? Escrow repairs? City inspection?

Let me give some background information. My mom’s mother died when she was 4 years old, and her father drank himself to death when she was 16. From the time of her being a very young child she was shuffled from different foster homes, with no one really caring about her. She had my older sister at 18, another girl at 20 whom she gave up for adoption, and then me at 24.

We were always very poor, sometimes without heat or electricity, or food to eat. We had to take many meals in a homeless shelter, and sometimes lived in shelters. When I turned 16 I started working, and helping with the bills, and moved out at 19. I got married, and recently divorced. Since I’ve been divorced I’ve been doing great, improving my credit and saving up money.

My mom lives in Jackson, Michigan. If you go to century21.com you will see the houses there are VERY inexpensive. There is one in particular for $16,900.00. My credit score is only 604 right now, but I have 2 credit cards that I’ve had over a year and have never been late on them, so I’m hoping my score will be higher in November of next year.

What are my finance options? I was planning on putting 20% down. I know most loans are based on 30 years, but I know that this loan stretched out over 30 years is highly unlikely (and what? 75 a month? Haha). But I also can’t afford to pay 17k right out, either.

Can anyone give me some ideas of what to expect? Also, my plan is to go to Michigan for Thanksgiving next year ( I live in NYC) and start the loan process. Given worst case scenarios, when can I expect to give my mom a gift box with her keys inside?

while you are in Michigan - contact a real estate agent and sign them up as your buyer's rep (no cost to you) - they can then get you the official MLS listing that will show more details than Realtor.com, like RE taxes, etc

research data on different towns at www.city-data.com - has stats on crime, unemployment, demographic info, more

On top of 20% down, yo will need another $1000-2000 for closing costs, inspections, etc.

when you next visit - try and get to see your top 2-3 choices for houses in person - ask lots of questions - get disclosure documents

when you make a decision, and AFTER you get pre-approved for a mortgage, and are ready to make a written offer - include in that offer - CONTINGENCIES for the home inspection, and anything else your RE agent suggests - the contingencies will allow you to back out of the deal and get your deposit money back if the home winds up having major problems discovered in the inspection

for $17000, don't expect a pristine house, but if there is termite or mold issues, RUN AWAY - you won;t get your inspection money back, but it would have cost you a ton more to deal with those issues after buying the house - IF the mortgage company even went thru with financing - they might not if there are major issues - same thing with homeowners insurance - they might not insure the house if it has a leaky roof

Insure the house for the REPLACEMENT value - which may be $150,000 or more - it will still only cost $500/yr or so and well worth it, otherwise if house burns down, you have no house and you still have a mortgage to pay, plus no where to live

GET a professional FULL HOUSE inspection, including termites, mold and Radon gas (about $400-600 total)

Then create a montage of your past 40 years on a powerpoint and project it on your wall when the guest are coming in. Your photo story should mark some interesting points of life for sharing, add text like your best buddy, your favourite trip etc

Have friends create poems about you and offer a nice gift for the best poem.

Decoration wise, use a lot of candles in small cups, cut flowers or rose petals everywhere would create a nice romantic ambience, use music you like since its your birthday. :-)

Otherwise have a theme party like retro-party and ask everyone to come dressed in the 60s and have a raving time, or an asian night and eat asian food etc.

Im thinking about christmas gift ideas for both my head instructor and my assistant instructor. My head instructor is a cool hip hop guy in his 20s, hip hop is basically his life. The starbucks gift card is a great idea but to me it saids student perspective. Because you have a crush on her and sort of want to let her know, I suggest something a little more personal. Get her the Starbucks cup (because she likes it) with maybe a piece of jewelry. I just discovered a super cool site that sells really nice jewelry and all at $10. Everything is gold plated or crystals so really nice an feminine.

I'm Christmas shopping online, and all that I have left are a 4 year old boy and a 6 year old boy. They both love spiderman and all of the characters associated with him. I want some good gift ideas that would make their Christmas special. They already have the costumes, and I would like to stay away from the "toy" thing (they have plenty of spiderman toys). I plan to spend between 50 and 60 dollars on each child, and get them at least two gifts. Any ideas?

My younger brother is 10 years younger than me. Looking back on it, the most special thing they did was let me carry the baby from the car to the house when they brought him home. Showed they trusted me.
