What would be some good gifts for a Japanese 13 year-old boy?

I live in Baltimore, Maryland and a 13-year old boy from Kawasaki, Japan is staying at my house for 2 and a half weeks. I need to get him several gifts, but unfortunately I don't know anything else about him. Does anyone know any general gift ideas? Would something Baltimore-themed be good, or tacky?

Answer
That's a tough one... typical japanese boys of those age nowadays are into games and mangas of their own country.

If you can at least find out what sort of sports he follows, it would make things little easier. Like, if he follow baseball, then something to do with Ichiro (Seattle Mariners), Daisuke Matsuzaka (Boston Red Sox), or any of the Japanese baseball players would be good. If he follow football, then something to do with David Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy) might be cool.

I need a gift idea for a 17 year old boy?

Maria W

I need a gift idea for a 17 year old boy. He's my best friend's son and he was just awarded Rookie of the Year at his local fire house where he is a volunteer. He's into computers, science type things, tv mystery type shows, and, obviously, fire fighting. Any ideas would be way helpful. I'll be seeing him this weekend. Somewhere in the $30 - $50 range. Thanks!

Answer
Did he like the Discovery Channel's "Planet Earth" series?

If he did, then take a look at this DVD set:

http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Changed-History-Iain-Stewart/dp/B003DC8824/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1295382650&sr=1-2

"How the Earth Changed History" with host Iain Stewart.
It is fairly new. It came out last year in June.

It is like "Planet Earth" in that it is a grand production by the BBC.
I got it at a local library and watched it all the way through over the course of a week.

It is in your price range with rush shipping.

It is 2 disks. It is not as big as "Planet Earth".
It goes through how the Earth's processes changed history. It deals with different topics. No animal stories like "Planet Earth". These shows cover things like geology and other scientific topics.
There is a section on FIRE.

(If you liked "Planet Earth", then be sure to borrow it from him! LOL)

Does a bridal showers theme NEED to correspond with the theme of the wedding?

This will be my very first time planning a bridal shower. It actually isn't till next may 2013, but when the bride told me that she wanted the wedding theme to be a barn wedding with sunflowers...usually I have ideas about stuff like this but sunflowers? They are beautiful flowers but to me, but can over power other flowers and don't go very well with other colors besides reds, oranges, blues, and purples. Which by the way are all colors the bride hates. I'm wondering if the theme of the wedding should be the theme of the bridal shower? Thank you!

Answer
The theme of a bridal shower actually has nothing to do with the decor. The theme suggests the type of gift the guests bring to the shower. Themes for bridal showers are kitchen shower, bath/spa shower, recipe shower, lingerie shower, etc. The hostess would ask the bride is there are particular things she needs and then a theme is chosen.

How has technology advanced since the 1960s?

Question M

So, how has technology advanced from 1963 to today? What is different and what is the same? What might we see from 2013 to 2063?

Answer
You do not know. We got electric in 1969. Some of the last on rule electrification. I seen my first computer in high school assembly. It was 18 inch's wide, 4 foot long, and 24 tall. In a wooden box. And could do some math. They said it was the future and we had a good laugh at that one. I bought my first hand held calculator in 1969. $20 buy the same today for $2. A days wages for one. In 5th grade a transistor radio was a hot Christmas gift. Few got one. Crews control in a car. Pull out the throttle cable and take your foot of the gas. In the 60s if you were willing to work you could always make out with a shovel and strong back. In truth the world changed in 1969,1970. I was very fortunate. Grandfather was the last blacksmith in the county. Hammer and forge man. And a good one.last of the horse wagons as well in towns, We seen the last of the old days pass away. In 1970 augers did the same work micro switch's for control, earning your way with a shovel died,we took the last mules to the tankage plant. As power skiders could get back in the swamp to log. And the world is changing again. What it will be I have no idea. But in high school I had no idea as well what today would be. I do know that after high school I only had 7 jobs were mules were involved. And we packed in our computers and solar cells to run them. I got those jobs because you young kids are dumb enough to walk behind a mule and don't think they bite at the other end. It has changed that much. From 1969 to today it became the electronic age. When I was in school if a show was on T.V they wanted you to watch. They made sure you could go to some ones house that had a T.V. I remember seeing my first color T.V. The color was so pale. And the sets so sensitive they had to be set in a vibration free area and dark room. But that technology created more jobs than they took. Expanding pros parity. To days technology does away with more jobs than it creates. And that I think is going to be a problem. The best will do well. I am retied now and hope I do not need to care about that. Because my skills are being rapidly out dated. Just like my grandfathers were. He was good, one of the best. But that way died with him. Today your a year out of the job market your skills are old fashion skills.

My fiancé is looking for something great to give his groomsmen that they will actually use and appreciate. They are all really fun guys who love music and they all do drink but we'd like to get them something original. Not just a money clip, flask or cuff links...any ideas? If you found a good website let me know too.

Answer
My husband gave his groomsmen nice pocket/hunting knives engraved with their names. They all loved them! Just keep in mind that if any of them are flying home, they won't be able to take a knife home in their carry-on luggage, so you might want to provide them with a padded envelope and postage so they can mail it home.

What are some unique groomsmen gifts?

Victoria

I am getting married in May and my fiance and I can not figure out what to get our groomsmen. The best man is a Marine and so is my fiance. And the the other groomsman is 19. We want to get them something they can actually use. Nothing like a flask, cuff links, shot glass, or you know, the 'generic" groomsmen gifts. We are on a VERY tight budget so we want to stay under $50 for both gifts. What are some ideas of things we can give them. And we don't care if they aren't the same thing either. We just want them to have a nice and thoughtful gift. Thanks!

Answer
There's no way to get a "non-generic" answer on the Internet, because we don't know these guys.

Just think about what they each like. You don't have to follow a theme or get them a keepsake so they'll "remember" the wedding. Don't shop on "wedding websites," since that stuff is typically tacky and poorly made, and you can get better quality (and usually better prices) on regular websites and stores. And for pete's sake, don't get monogrammed stuff, because nobody ever buys that stuff outside of a wedding.

If one guy likes sports, get him a cap from his favorite team, or a pair of tickets to a game, or a shirt.

If one guy likes wine/beer, get him a nice bottle and a good-quality bottle opener.

If one guys likes the outdoors, get him a pocket knife, sleeping bag, flashlight, etc.

If one guy is stylish, get him some nice sunglasses or a brand-name iPad cover or a watch.

If one guy just bought his first house, get him a Home Depot gift card or a toolbox full of small tools.

Don't knock gift cards, if all else fails. Let them pick out things that they know they need. Just be sure it's to a store or website that you know for a fact they use ... I currently have $100 worth of cards for crappy chain restaurants where I never ever eat. If you really aren't sure what they'd like, just go with a Visa gift card that can be used anywhere.

My girl friend is visiting to me I want to give her something nice & unique gift; any good idea please?

IMFragile

So far I gave her COACH purses, watches, IPod, Laptop, Perfumes these things generally girls like it I guess – I don’t know what I should do/give her this time! (I do just because I love her so much) – Any unique gift idea please?

Answer
How about mixing it up a little and instead of a gift this time, think up a really cool place to take her and make it something she hasn't done before. If you have trouble thinking up something, go to a business that puts out those flyers for tourists. We all tend to overlook things closer to home.

Christmas Gift for 9 year old boy with ADD?

My son is ADD. He is not the hyper type just the type that can't keep attention well. I was thinking of getting him a the LeapFrog tablet but he HATES to read. Does anyone have any good gift ideas that I can get for a 9 year old boy with ADD?

Answer
I'd say get him something that everyone can enjoy (not in the sense of arguments and shouting who's go it is, but in the sense of you can sit as a family and play/use it).

Perhaps, if you don't have one already, get him a Nintendo Wii; you can get them dirt-cheap now and there are bundles and bundles of games with them. They also require being physical, usually what any kid (not just those with ADD) require.
I can't think of much else, but maybe a Nintendo DS or PSP or something similar?
I'm sure he'd appreciate you / family members playing along with him, and the more choices in games he has at his fingers, the longer he'll be entertained.
Hoped this helps, if not, I hope you get the advice you're looking for!

I am babysitting a 9 year old boy tonight and I need some ideas on how I can keep him entertained or some fun Ideas to do???

Answer
You could..
Have a game night with some of yours (and his) favorite board games
Have a movie night..pop some popcorn and watch a movie..maybe a christmas one!
Make hot chocolate and decorate cookies (Ik, he's a 9 year old boy so he may not be interested, but you never know!)
Help him make Christmas gifts or cards for his friends, family and parents-bring some supplies
Make a fort and read inside it
Make your own board game! get a huge piece of paper, and make up your own game! you can base it on one you already know or make up something completely original!

I am having such a hard time getting over a man who I consider to be my one true love. Could people please give me suggestions or ideas of some of the methods they have used that worked for them to help them fall out of love and move on with their lives after their most painful break ups?

Answer
It's a cliche, but time helps - just filling it in with productive and fun things. You don't have to go out flirting at bars right away, unless that's what you find fun.

What I did was spend time with my friends and family as much as possible. I also talked about how I felt with trusted friends and soon began to feel better (a diary was also very helpful for things I felt I couldn't say). Resting and gentle, fun exercise like a walk somewhere in nature such as a beach (or better yet a holiday) will lift your spirits.

Immediately though, get rid of presents and gifts your ex gave you, and remove photos from online accounts and photo albums. You don't have to destroy photos or gifts, just put them somewhere out of sight. Also, delete their email address, phone number and online friend links from your online accounts if you are not tied to them financially or with children.

If you feel angry because perhaps the relationship ended in a bad way from their side, don't resort to being petty such as sending nasty texts, visiting their house to harass them or their family members, or nasty messages online, or calling in a weird voice or making up reasons to.

This next while should be about showing kindness and grace toward friends and family who care for you, and your own personal growth and change. So the last thing you can do soon or immediately is a shopping trip (if you can), or some pampering at home, combined with some new goals for 2013.

It will take time, but you will emerge a better person for addressing your feelings with grace and kindness. If the man is nasty to you or people close to you, that will help you get over him all the more, showing you that you deserve better, because you're dealing with the same situation in a much better way. As a rough guess, a year for each year you were with him will be how long it takes if you were closely involved.

You can do it!

Why have health care costs increased increased so exponentially in the last thirty or so years?

PaulDrake

I'm looking for a detailed in depth answer and not the usual polemics and talking points. When I was younger I had jobs that did not provide health insurance and was able to incur some costs that would ruin me today , but did not in that time. What exactly has happened to get us into the unfortunate place we find ouselves now?

Answer
It's a combination of things, primarily governmental bad choices and the HANDFUL of large insurers who DOMINATE health care.

A FEW examples of how the government drives up costs:

the laundry list of nonsense states require in order to allow a plan to be sold in their state. There is NO good reason for this. If someone wants a "barebones" plan and the company is solvent, let it be offered, instead of stupidly DEMANDING that chiropractic care be offered, or something else that some people won't want.

When we have government programs (and we have SEVERAL: Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, IHS, VA, as well as other programs that allow more income than Medicare, but that's the concept), ALL should do everything possible to reduce costs. Example: the VA logically allows for negotiated prescription med prices, Medicare is prohibited. End result: far more expense for the taxpayer and the patient. ALSO those on Medicare a decade ago who had an HMO version typically got drug coverage that is BETTER than the current idiocy of the "donut hole" that they've all apparently converted to now. Thanks, Uncle Sam.

Freebies for "charity hospitals." Fact is the bulk of hospitals have this designation and are tax-exempt. The idea was that they'd give back the equivalent of their tax pass to the public they are supposed to serve. Fact: the majority fail to do so. See CAGW--Citizens Against GovernmentWaste--also check out specifially IL AG's Madigan's attempt to get them to get on board with that.

AWP BS--AWP is the "Average Wholesale Price" of drugs. It's a fictional story designed to bump up government payment to drug companies.

ERISA shield--most folks with insurance still get it through work. ERISA has been misapplied by the courts and folks with insurance that way can be denied treatment their plan SHOULD cover with impunity. IF they damage the patient, all they can be out in court is what the treatment that was denied would cost. IF they can win the "drag it out" lottery and the patient dies, they can't even be fined! Read Jamie Cort's book "HMOs: Making a Killing."

See the testimony of Meidinger re: the routine bad accounting principles where they get GIFTS that other businesses and certainly PEOPLE would pay tax on and don't: http://www.ftc.gov/reports/healthcare/040723healthcarerpt.pdf

Also government routinely tries to balance their Medicare Ponzi scheme on the backs of doctors--who are stopping taking this bogus system:
http://www.massmed.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=vs_mar05_top&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=11037
"That dark cloud lurking over the shoulder of every Massachusetts physician is Medicare. If Congress does not act, doctors' payments from Medicare will be cut by about 5 percent annually, beginning next year through 2012, creating a financial hailstorm that would wreak havoc with already strained practices.

Cumulatively, the proposed cuts represent a 31 percent reduction in Medicare reimbursement. If the cuts are adjusted for practice-cost inflation, the American Medical Association says Medicare payment rates to physicians in 2013 would be less than half of what they were in 1991."
The media who refuse to report these facts wouldn't take that kind of pay cut OR any pay cut.

Insurers bad faith is quite common. Examples include:

Linda Peeno, MD comes clean about how insurers deny claims to save money, NOT to follow the policy agreement:
http://www.thenationalcoalition.org/DrPeenotestimony.html

more bad faith, esp. with United Health Care:
http://www.newsmax.com/medicine_men/medical_insurance/2008/01/03/61543.html

attempted end runs to make sure they get their excessive demands met by now using flat out predatory lending practices:
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/nov2007/db20071120_397008.htm

I could go on--I've studied these things for some time now. On the bright side, the current system could be VASTLY improved with some sensible changes, including:

price transparency--no reason why prices can't be posted up front and before the fact. Many expenses are NOT for emergencies and people should be able to shop around and make an INFORMED financial decision, which they are DENIED now, though this is the ONLY industry in which that is allowed. (If you're a car repair shop and you don't follow the law on estimates, not only are you SOL you may not be able to get ONE CENT for work done. You don't see them laughing at the law much in those states on car repair.)

EVERYONE should be required for all non-emergency procedures, to give the patient the bottom line bill. The insurer should be legally required to pay what he says he will BARRING fraud. Any LIKELY procedures should be simarly costed out and locked in. Example: angiogram? Good chance you'll need an angioplasty and the cardiologist might want to do it there and then. Have him do the medical informed consent AND have the bill costed out for JUST the angiogram AND the angioplasty IF needed--takes a lot of pressure off everyone as well. No reason for anyone to object. We all know if a patient codes on the table, there will be additional charges, but that doesn't happen often and as it is a medical emergency, you have to treat it.

Oh and "compassionate entry" is costing us a LOT. The Border Patrol is told specifically to let in illegals who are sick for care they know the taxpayer will have to pay for:
"Dickson emphasizes that not all the free care is going to illegal aliens passing through on their way to other states. About half goes to Mexicans who use the Copper Queen as their personal emergency-care facility. In effect, the hospital, which performs general surgery, has become the trauma center for that stretch of northern Mexico. If an ambulance pulls up to the border-crossing point near Bisbee and announces "compassionate entry," the border patrol waves it through, and the Copper Queen is compelled to treat the patient. It is one more program that Congress mandates but does not pay for. "If you make me treat someone," says Dickson, "then you need to pay me. You can't have unfunded mandates in a small hospital." Although the Medicare drug act that passed last year provides for modest payments to hospitals that treat illegal aliens, Dickson says there is a catch that the U.S. government has yet to figure out. "How do I document an undocumented alien? How am I going to prove I rendered that care? They have no Social Security number, no driver's license.'"
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,995145-7,00.html

Frankly, more can be said, but if you're interested in a PLAN that makes sense (we need to do something with the huge sums we spend on the government programs we ALREADY have millions enrolled in), then here it is and it's being ignored by the pols because there's nothing in it for them apparently. (I found this months ago and sent a good summary and link to the FREE PDF and the federal level ones ignore the hell out of it.) Check it out and see what you think: no increased individual taxes, no mandates for employers, but a funding solution that solves another problem in the system:
http://www.booklocker.com/books/3068.html

Oh and that plan would work because when you get something close to a free market, it DOES work:

Check out LASIK prices over a decade--did they go up 120% like Medicare premiums did (1998: $43.80, 2008 $96.40) or did they drop like a rock? Why did they drop--few third-party payers involved.

Ditto plastic surgery--look at the cost of a "tummy tuck" which is MAJOR abdominal surgery and compare with a MEDICALLY NECESSARY uncomplicated appendectomy if you're uninsured. The appy will bankrupt you in many cases.

Walk-in clinics (Wal-Mart, CVS, grocery stores) be seen in a short time and treated for around $100--from sprains to upper respiratory infections, strep throat, etc.

Me and some girl friends are going to throw a bridal shower for a close friend who's getting married end of September, and we decided to bring little gifts, can you suggests gift ideas that I can check out? Thanks!

Answer
Things that are just for her, not for her new household. Lingerie, but not sexy lingerie. Boutique toiletries. If cooking is her hobby, you could get a nice piece of cookware; if she sews, a nice piece of sewing gear, if she's the gardener, something for that. But not just housewares - something special for her particular interests. Books - reference books, or advice / humor.

Usually there's a registry. You, the shower-thrower, could encourage her to set one up and suggest the price range her guests can comfortably buy in.

My sister lives in Montana but she's coming back down here in Cali to have the wedding. My other sister, mother, and I need bridal shower gift ideas that we can give her and she can either take it on the plane back or it will ship to her house for relatively cheap. Anyone have ideas? We want something unique and cute... not boring like engraved wedding frames or something.

Answer
If you can get a picture of the bride and groom dancing to their first dance, I saw a great idea where someone put one on a canvas and had the lyrics to the song on the canvas as well. They could hang it in their home and see it everyday. I actually love this idea and have thought about doing it with my picture as well. It's also something unique that any bride would love! Good luck!

Who has a high-paying dividend with promising growth and future returns?

best graduation gift ideas

best graduation gift ideas image

PECOS BILL

I am graduating this semester. My father wants to buy me some stock as a graduation gift. My idea is a high-paying dividend with promising growth and future returns. This would be a long-term investment for me to sit on for my working years. Please give me some ideas for a few companies that may give me what I want. Thanks!

Answer
Okay. Think about this. If you buy a dividend-yielding stock, this will mean you will have to declare the dividends as income. More importantly, dividends stocks should not be your first pick, as it sounds like you are young...since you are getting out of college. Now, if you were 45, that would be an entirely different story.
Now I don't know what degree you will be receiving, but I would imagine you had at least one economics class. Dividends are nothing more than an opportunity cost of capital. Companies issue out dividends becuase they cannot use the money to grow anyfurther...they reached a peak in the growth and value. So they issue Dividends to investors as a means to hold onto them. Its essentially a quite deal, where they pay you back some of your money in exchange for the rest of your money. Sound stupid. It is, but almost no one knows that this is exactly what is going on. I didn't until I got into this industry.
If you bought a stock this mystery stock you are looking for at $20/share. And then next quarter, they annouced a $.50/share dividend (by the way, they don't owe dividends...so there is never a guarantee you will get one) and their market price is 22.50/share at the time. 15 days later, after something called an 'ex-date' the stock exchange where that companies stock is listed will drop the price of the stock $.50. Why do they do that: So that day traders cant get in, but a truck load of shares, get the dividend, and then bail without losing money. This is now a prohibitted action. So what does this mean to you: If you have 1000 shares, valued at 22.50/share, before the ex-date you would have $22,500. After the ex-date you would have $22,000 worth and you would receive a check from them for $500, which is your dividend and is therefore taxable to your current income tax level. So if you are in the 15% tax bracket, you would have to pay $75 dollars in taxes. Essentially, you had $22,500...and now you would have $22,425 (stocks and cash combined). How is this a benefit? Its not and it this is why I don't have my clients seek this out.

My advise is this. Either A) put the money into a Roth IRA, and make contributions into it. B) dump the money into a single stock you are interested in (meaning a sector you would actually be interested in following) and when doing this stick with Mega or Large cap stocks, as they tend to be safer. Learn more about the other Caps later.
or C) hold onto the money. Buy some books on investing and learn about where your strong suits are before you commit that money. That way your aren't asking for a fish, rather you are learning how to fish.

Good luck and congradulations on graduating!
On a side note, you may also want to look into iShares and ETFs if you are thinking about option C. My area of focus is on Natural Resources (they are getting smaller) and the Energy sector (Not Ethanol!!!!!)
-----
You need just as much knowledge investing in Mutual Funds as you would a single stock. Intrinsic valuation models still need to be conducted. Just like picking a stock without any real knowledge behind it can be hazardous, the same is true with Mutual Funds.

Graduation gift ideas for college student living at home?

bambi

I have several friends graduating this year. All live at home with their parents and are planning to move onto grad school (medical, pharmacy, dental, etc.). Meaning, I don't need to buy any home decor items, resume books, or anything else "practical" that I've seen on gift list ideas. I wanted to give money, but as I'll probably only be able to give $20 each, I feel that amount looks cheaper than a cheap gift.....

Answer
the only thing i could possibly think of right now is...
give them something memorable, something that can be useful... or you could always put together a cheap basket (a whole lot of cheap things that would make it seem like you spend a lot of money but not to cheat that it noticeable that it cheap. you want to get things that look expensive but isn't)

or
u can buy a card, t-shirt, a bag of there favorite candy, throw in a picture fame in a really cute laundry basket and call it a day

or

u can take it back to 5th grade and buy little things that stand for something like your friendship, memories etc... and put a note or card in it explain what each thing stood for in y'all relationship as friends...

Homemade cookies, fuzzy socks (i know my mom loves those),
a homemade coupon book they look like this: http://thedahlingdatingdivas.blogspot.com/2010/09/amazing-homemade-coupon-books.html add things that say 'One free day on bed in breakfast' or 'One free foot massage' or 'One free night of no dishes' She will LOVE that, lottery tickets if you can get someone to go buy them for you, giftcard, hallmark card, slippers, perfume, lotion, jewelry.

Any ideas for an 80th birthday party celebration?

I need help on gift ideas, and unique decorating, etc. It's my mom's birthday and we have rented a room at a resturant. What do you thonk of pictures of my mom during different satges - little girl, teen, wedding, etc? Thanks for all answers.

Answer
a picture board is a great idea- I did one for my moms 60th party and she had a great time showing off her pics to everyone! Go get one of those tri-fold display boards and put tons of pics of her throughout the years on it- or you can make a slide show and play it on someones laptop computer- whichever works better for you. For decorating I just used my moms favorite colors- pink, purple, and silver accents- we had fake flower petals scattered down the center of the tables and a set of pretty candles next to a vase of lillies. I also found small travel candles for 50 cents and had one of those at each table setting as a party favor for the guests. We had balloon arrangements all over the room and hung streamers and some birthday banners too. I had also found on Ebay a book all about the year she was born and we had that on the picture table so people could look through that also and I found a Life magazine from th week she was born on there too (I gave that as a gift to her and she loved it).
so as far as decorations- go with something that you think she would like, maybe vases of her favorite flowers all over, or make it a theme relating to her favorite hobby and decorate along those lines (gardening, bingo, quilting- whatever!) This is a good time also to get some family pictures taken so make sure to gather up the whole group before people start to leave to get some good family shots.

What kind of gifts are appropriate for a teacher?

Ted

I'm 16 and leaving high school this year. I feel I really need to get something for my Math teacher. She stays after school every Tuesday and Thursday for extra classes with the higher tier folks.

I was going to get her a bottle of wine but I don't know... Lol. I thought it might be weird a minor purchasing wine for her teacher. I don't fancy buying her flowers/chocolates ect, I think she would appreciate the alcohol more!

What are other good gift ideas and is wine a suitable gift? Thanks!

Answer
It may not look good on her end if she accepts wine from a student, let alone a 16 year old student. I would suggest a gift card to a nice restaurant where she can buy her own wine.
Good luck!

dude i'm 14, so what i do when i'm ever on the comp is this. SWAGBUCKS. thats key. okay so you basically search like a search engine like google, but you win these things called swag bucks that can betraded in for things like amazon gift cards and ipods and all that. it doesnt require a credit card, thank god. and only an address if you get something that has to go through the mail, but dont worry its not risky. amazon gift cards are 60 swag bucks and i get about 1 per week doing nothing. check out this video on youtube to learn about it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1DHDSL1uaw

to get started go to this link:

http://swagbucks.com/?cmd=sb-register&rb=431590

just sign up and search, and then give people your link and when they sign up under you, everytime they win a swagbucks, you also get 1. so its a great way to get easy gift cards that can be used on amazon.com. so sign up under the link and get started. just give it a try and see how you like it. i got addicted haha

Does anyone else think The Beatles are overrated?

Fish Fille

I have always had an issue with how highly people perceive The Beatles. I have never met a person with any true understanding of music who views The Beatles as anything less than astonishing. It seems as though they are held in such high regards that no one seems to challenge the idea that perhaps they were not the greatest band to ever exist. Before I get attacked for just not understanding or trolling let me state that I do respect The Beatles. With the exception of Ringo, the band was exceptionally talented and do deserve respect. I understand that the majority of artist who came about after The Beatles drew heavy influence from them. I can also say that Harrison, McCartney, and Lennon were fantastic song writers, and I would easily place Paul McCartney on my list of the top 10 bassists in existence. However, with all this being said I can count on one hand the number of songs by The Beatles I actually enjoy listening to.

Here are my complaints with them. First of all they experimented with their style too much. I know this is something people commend The Beatles for, but it makes me detest them. They were very successful in transitioning from British-pop to deeper more technically complicated music. They mastered every genre of music they attempted to play, but I personally prefer bands that have a consistent style. The second flaw that crawls under my skin are Paul McCartney's atrociously teeny-bopper lyrics. I know he is supposed to be the least appreciated lyricist in the band being trumped by Lennon's iconic status, but in reality being more profound and subtle in his writing. However, I feel his subtlety was done in in such a way that his lyrics almost have a silly child-like quality to them. Yet again, I know, he wrote deep meaningful lyrics such as "Blackbird," but his stylistic choices just turn me off. A final point I would like to make, just to keep this short is the matter that they are definitively considered the greatest band of all time. This one may be sort of cheap, but I feel it is an adequate argument against their status. With the consistent praise The Beatles receive, it almost belittles other artists who came around the same time and after. To think that in the 43 years since their end that not a single artist has risen up to equal or surpass their talent is absurd.

I for one fall into the camp that argues that The Rolling Stones, despite following The Beatles religiously for the early part of their career, are the superior band. For one, their style was much more consistent and has a distinct ability to get you blood pumping and just make you feel way too manly for your own good. In terms of their lyrics; The Stones have some deeper meaningful lyrics in their repertoire with songs such as "Dead Flowers," but more importantly they have balls out rock anthems that are exciting. I can't name a single song The Beatles had that makes me want to jump around and have a good time. And finally, though they get a huge amount of recognition, I have never heard any critic argue that they are the greatest band of all time.

However this is not about how The Rolling Stones are better than The Beatles, but rather questioning the status of The Beatles. What I want to know is if anyone thinks The Beatles are over-appreciated like I do, and if so what bands do you think are better and in what ways?

Answer
This is one of the few "Why the Beatles?" questions I actually bother to answer. I won't say I agree with you on most of it, but you're at least not ranting and raving like some others (from either side, admittedly) tend to do. You focused more on the status than taking potshots, and you do raise some pretty good points about them not exactly being the "best." And I do like the Stones as well, so you're not alone on that.

But I think for the fanbases, there's some other things to take into account. The Beatles aren't at the top in some people's books because they did things better than everyone else, or even tried to. It's more an emotional connection people feel with the songs; whether it was one of the first they heard, or got them through a tough time, or brought back their own personal memories. Yes, you could argue the same for any band, only in their time the Beatles were more mainstream -the "Beatlemania" happened at the right place at the right time to make them world-famous. They were the among the first groups that people from the 60's generation and beyond were introduced to, so that allowed them to carry on.

As far as my own opinion outside the other fans, I'm saying they're my favourites. I like the guys, their humor, the experimenting. Even Paul's lyrics and Ringo's drumming (and we'll agree to differ on those fronts). I love it all, and I've listened to them since I was 6 so that may be a bias.

But I never try to get into arguments that they're the "best" - I don't take it lying down when people seem to slag off the members for no good reason (other people, not meaning you), but I'm not one of those all-out "fans" who feels it necessary to say that no one else will ever be more musically gifted and make a bigger impact in future. There's defending a band, and then there's flat-out being close-minded to everything else yet to come.

Even some of the guys in interviews themselves said it wasn't fair to other groups in the 60's, 70's, and beyond up to now, to say that nothing would ever be better than the Beatles: "They've argued the same thing for years before us, and then there comes along another act. Every generation has its 'best group' that nothing can top, but it's always the same pattern. But that's good, and I can't wait for the next generation of kids."

I am looking for a Christmas gift for my 11-year-old boy who is a computer and video game fan. He loves items for computers and also technology items like small robots and things

Answer
One idea you should consider is Club Penguin Toys. The neat thing about these toys is that there's a virtual world tie in so he can interact with other kids his age online and play games, make friends, etc.

These toys are selling out everywhere. They're available online at a couple of places. Try going to TheFrugalOne.com (http://thefrugalone.com/saving-money/club-penguin-toys-disney/) where there's a good selection you can peruse.

Another idea is WebKinz. TheFrugalOne.com also has a piece on those toys (http://thefrugalone.com/saving-money/webkinz-ganz-plush-reindeer-toy-dolls/).

There's also the Ultimate Wall-E Robots (http://thefrugalone.com/saving-money/walle-robot-perfect-christmas-gift-kids/)

Check out the following article for some good ideas: http://thefrugalone.com/saving-money/kids-gift-ideas-gifts-mom-dad/

What are some good gift ideas for a precocious 11 year old boy for between 20-40 dollars?

Q. He's very smart, good at science, and has enough video games! He splits time between his mom and dad's homes and they tend to buy him a lot of things so finding something he doesn't already have and also wants is tricky.

He likes computers, tennis, and is quite clever for his age but doesn't really like to read and I'm sick of buying him books for Christmas only to have them gather dust.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Answer
Well here's an idea - and I did it for my nephew last year. I asked my sister for photos of some of his favorite things - trips, animals, friends. Then I found this awesome website called http://www.ipixxl.com. I edited the photos how I wanted them - then I had several large removable vinyl stickers made for him. This way he can decorate his room with them - when he gets tired of them he can move them around because they peel right off. Maybe one day he will want to take them with him to his own home to share with his children. I think they are a very unique keepsake that lasts forever. Just an idea though!

Good luck!

Since I am going to be the best man for the wedding, I would like some ideas on what to get the couple for their engagement gift. I want to get something unique and thoughtful that they would both enjoy.

Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Answer
Maybe do some brainstorming about things they enjoy doing. Perhaps tickets for something they've always wanted to do? Or a piece of furniture for their house?

I'd just be careful that it's something that they'd both enjoy equally, instead of something the guy would like better. Or, if it is a bit unbalanced, make it something that she would like better, since you and the guy are close and it'd welcome her into the fold, if that makes sense?

Hope this helps.

What is a good engagement gift for my friend?

My friend is getting married, she is in her late twenties, in college and likes makeup. I don't know much about her fiancee, what should I get her for an engagement gift? Any ideas?

Answer
You need to get something for both of them, not just for your friend.

A nice bottle of wine or champagne is always appropriate. You could also get a wedding planning book. Maybe a gift card for some money off on a photography session. You could also get gift cards to a restaurant or massage... plan a date night for them together.

Cub Scout fundraising ideas?

wudbiser

My cub scouts are 7 years old and want to raise money to donate to the local police K9's. They are excited about buying a gift card from a pet store and giving it to the police. The police chief wants to be there to thank the boys, give them a tour of the police station, and then have the dogs do tricks for the boys. Any ideas you have that are easy for 7 year olds to do would be of great help.

Answer
I was girl scout a long time ago, so I am not sure if this is something you can still do, but we offered to weed our elderly neighbors' gardens and landscaping. We offered the service for $1.00 an hour. I am sure with today's economy you could ask for a little more.
They could offer chaperoned dog walking services and it fits in with what they are trying to buy the gift card for.
I don't if BSA would allow either these now, so bear with me :-)

Trying to develop some Christmas gift ideas for an aspiring college art student of 19 years. He is going to college for Art & Design, he is heavily into art, film, some tech, gaming, coffee, and just a wide range of things. Need some simple decent priced gift ideas.

Answer
A Wacom Bamboo Tablet. My dad got me one for Christmas, and from an artist's point of view, I have to say it's the best and most useful thing he ever gave me. Photoshop or Sony Vegas would be really great programs to buy him too.

I need to get a Christmas gift for a 4 year old boy.
He really likes animals, coloring, and crafty stuff, and Nick Jr.
I was thinking about the Crayola glow dome...
Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Answer
I think the little ones are so much easier to buy for. Wait until you have teenagers and you have no idea what to buy them anymore... so I'm rather surprised with this question.

You can get him anything from...
- craft supplies like crayons/marker sets
- stuffed animal of his favourite animal
- colouring and activity books
- electronic toys & games (like plug and play games that you plug into your TV)
- since it's winter... think sleds or "saucers", or if any of his parents skii or snowboards... think about getting a mini snowboard or a pair of skiis to get him started.
- i know little guys like lego, or even k'nex are great fun.
here are some that are listed $10 and under:
http://www.knex.com/Shop/theme_search.php?searchType=price&subType=0_10

Walk into Wal-Mart or any toy shop and think of what little boys would like! If it's not your kid, make sure the product you're buying is kid-safe... and doesn't have little pieces they can choke on. If you're not sure about a gift idea... you could always double check with the parent too.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Should I buy a gift for the people I babysit for?

nata77

I've been babysitting 1-2 times a month for one family for 1 year, and the other for 2 years. Should I get the parents something, or the kids? If so, any ideas for presents for the kids who have everything? There are 3 year old boy & girl twins in one family, and a 6 year old girl and 10 year old boy in the other.

Answer
What a thoughtful thing to want to do!
I wouldn't buy them anything, you babysit to earn money, and it isn't a lot. I would give them a gift however.
The best present, and also the cheapest, would be to make an assortment of home made biscuits for each family.
Everyone will be able to enjoy them, and they will be thrilled to know you went to so much trouble for them.
Put them together in a large cellophane bags, and tie up with red ribbons and holly leaves, or baubles, and they will look really festive. Don't forget to give them a card as well.
Hope this idea helps, and you have a very merry Christmas.
