Need ideas for being a counselor for an outdoor ed camp?

Payton

So in my school district, the 6th graders go to a camp for 4 days and a few high schoolers are the counselors. I am one of the counselors and have a group of 14 11-year-old boys between myself and another counselor. I'm having problems thinking of ideas of things to do. Most cabins have some sort of small gift that the counselors give the students, but I can't think of anything to give them. What is something that I could give them that would satisfy this?

Answer
Get them each a compass and have one day where you practice orienteering. You could then incorporate that into a treasure hunt with teams having to follow directions to the treasure.

Have fun!

My dad is retiring at the end of May after 21 years in the Marines. I have no idea what to get him. Im 17 and dont have a job so whatever i get needs to be reasonable enough for my mom to pay for. :)
Any suggestions?

Answer
you could look on the Navy NEX site as they have a vast array of some neat stuff aimed at both active and retiring men and women from all branches.

When my husband retired he was never a big one for having a me me wall, so anything anyone got him was aimed at his hobbies and likes..you know this part of him best............maybe a decent bottle of scotch, a few fine cigars that sort of thing............

Again at the exchange see if they have a retired USMC t,shirt...........

He will more than likely be given a flag at the end of his retirement ceremony, maybe a really nice case for it, do NOT buy this at the exchange as they cost enough to feed a small army for a week, look at your local hobby shops and wait for a good coupon to come out.........

Relax as him getting a gift from you is the last thing on his mind.

How much money would be needed to modernize a third world countries economy?

Q. I find it very shocking how fast some of these countries economies have grown. The world is changing and it's amazing. There are still a lot of third world countries still though. I was wondering how much investment would be needed to totally modernize a third world countries economy? Let's use Egypt as an example..

Population - 77 million
GDP - 470 billion
GDP per Cap - 2,450

I find the best way to modernize is built infrastructure and spread education. My guess would be 800 billion to 1 trillion to totally modernize a economy..

Answer
I agree with another poster that corruption in government would bar any progress that an influx of cash would bring. The real problem to the idea that there is a set amount of money it that the money must go to the highest valued areas and that because the influx of buying power has not yet lead to an increase in productive capacity, the rest of the world would be worse of in the short run because of the influx.

To illustrate it would be like 1 trillion injected into Nigeria and the buying power used to build expensive government buildings and hospitals, pretty up the land, and use the rest to feed the starving. While the hospitals would certainly help and feeding the hungry isn't a bad goal, this would not lead to very much economic growth at all. What would have to be increaced is productive capacity so you would want factories, ports, and ships in addition to just things like infrastructure and education. This example could go for Egypt too but Egypt is starting from a much better place. The issue would be finding what things should be invested in and how much and central planners are notoriously bad at this - markets tend to do this much better.

Another issue could be cultural differences that prevent modernization. Extreeme examples could be like Native Americans who would rather live on reservation in relative poverty. Other examples could be like farmers in Egypt unwilling to seek more profitable employment, Muslim countries unwilling to educate women and let them enter the workforce. These cultural differences are evident in industrialized countries too: Greeks riot when fully paid retirement is put back to age 57, Spain shuts down in the middle of the day for Siesta, and the French make it illegal to work more than so many hours a day (and their world cup team refuses to practice and gets embarrassed in the game).

So basically there is no magic number. Industrialized nations took $0 of gift money to become modernized and some third world countries would invest a trillion dollars only to let it fall into disrepair in a few generations because of corruption and cultural factors.

how far in advance should you register for wedding gifts?

brandi o

are wedding i June 2nd 2013 we are making the invites by hand next week and hopefully sending them out within a few weeks after that (a lot of out of town guests). do you know if we would just be able to register now? or should we waite

Answer
I have to agree with the others here... your invitations do not need to go out for another ten months or so, no matter how many out of town guests you have. Think about it- would you want to RSVP to something happening in a year? So, so, so much could happen in that time- it's a really bad idea, not to mention kind of rude to expect your guests to plan that far in advance. At the very, very, very earliest, send them 10 weeks in advance, but 6-8 is even more ideal.
That being said, save the dates are not totally necessary if you don't have the budget for them, although they are nice since you do have people traveling. Really, that's up to you though. Just please wait on those invites.
As far as registering, most places recommend doing so around a year in advance, although I believe that's too far ahead of time, as nobody will probably be buying gifts that early. I think the soonest you should probably do it is around 6 months before the wedding. That way, when it comes time for people to start buying things, the items will actually still be available. If you register now, there's a chance nothing will still be in the store by the time the wedding rolls around. If you feel you must start your registry early, just keep up on it and make sure everything doesn't go out of stock.

Some of my wedding invitations went out wrong, do I have to resend?

Liz

The actual wedding invitation was fine, but some of the response cards went out with the wrong Reply By date. Some say April 15, 2013, which is correct. However, some say to respond by July 20, 2012. I have no idea how this happened - I made the invitations myself and I'm pretty sure I put them all in the prniter at the same time. Anyway, my fiance thinks we have to send out new cards? There's no way for me to know who got the good ones and who got the bad ones. Do I have to contact every guest? The date is obviously wrong, so maybe it doesn't matter?

Answer
First let me point out the unwisdom of providing any deadline at all. It will only encourage people to dawdle. If a host is asked for a deadline for responses, the reply is "Why, as soon as possible! We're naturally anxious to know who will be attending. Will you know by next week?"

Your solution here is to ditch the little cards. Keep in mind that good manners requires us to acknowledge invitations within 48 hours, and to ASK if we may have some time to respond. "Gordon, thank you for inviting us to your son's wedding. May we have until the end of March to let you know?" The "thank you" part is acknowledgment, is letting you know the invitation was received. The "until the end of March" part is asking for time to respond, time to let hosts know who will be attending.

About 2 weeks after you send invitations, put your helpers to work calling everyone who has not yet acknowledged the invitation. "I'm calling on behalf the hosts for the Oscar Munoz - Alice McNulty wedding. They are wondering whether the invitation sent to your address may have been lost in the mail."

The moment it is established that the invitation was indeed received, your helpers ask "When might the hosts expect your response? Will you know by next week?" Your helpers continue to call each week (or more often) until those invited DO have a response.

Your helpers should be prepared to say things like "There is a misunderstanding. The invitation is for Marge and Homer Simpson, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The guest list doesn't include Ned or Milhouse."

These phones calls are the time to deal with the details that didn't belong on your elegant invitations. If people forget to ask, your helpers prompt them. "You're probably wondering how dressed up to get. The hosts are hoping that the gentlemen will wear jackets and ties and that the ladies ..." Ditto for driving directions, what kind of food and drink to expect, reminders to arrive promptly, and so on.

During these conversations, your helpers ask people to please disregard the response cards, as there was a printing error. Do not provide details concerning what the error was. TMI leads to trouble --- consider that if you hadn't provided a deadline, then you wouldn't be in this pickle.

Your helpers shouldn't bring this up, but many people will ask "What sort of gift might the couple appreciate?" The reply should mention something you both like, where you are registered, and that contributions to the honeymoon fund are welcome. That first part -- "they collect antique dental instruments" -- is needed for people who prefer to choose a gift rather than give cash or give from the registry.

Do not be deluded into copying The Wedding Industry model of Bride As Passive Ninny Waiting Helplessly By Mailbox For Cards That Never Arrive. That is a TRICK to deprive hosts of an accurate headcount, so that the caterer will be told "You'd better have 12 extra dinners prepared just in case, since we don't really know who will come." Forget that horse manure and REMIND people that their prompt response is expected.

What's are the best arts & craft kits for an 8 year old boy?

jabbamonke

I need to buy my nephew something... He likes art, but has all the standard supplies (markers, paint, etc.). I would like to get him something cool and different. Not something that he has already seen, or can easily create in school. I also don't want to get him some cheap cardboard cutout kit. Please let me know if you have any good ideas!
As mentioned, he has all the standard craft stuff. Not looking for something I can easily buy at walmart or toys r us. Trying to be a little different.

Answer
Look at yahoo groups Wargaming_on_a_budget, these guys make great stuff, if he has paints, markers and glue he could get into making stuff like this. this figures are made out of wood spools and buttons and such, i made a few out of flat baby clothespins. Join the group get some ideas and show him some of the stuff. most of it requires little to no cutting so it should be safe. Like i said check out the group, they have a nice picture of one of the models some one made.

Or a Blank Mighty Mug, they're pretty cool!

I love Chicago, and want to make something crafty to show my adoration for it... Any ideas?

niiice kit

My friend is in love with Texas, and made this: http://tinypic.com/r/21dfk84/6
(we're from Wisconsin, btw)

I think it's adorable, and so crafty, and I want to make something crafty and similar for my love of Chicago, but I'm having trouble coming up with ideas. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

I've tried searching for something of inspiration on Pinterest, but no such luck..

Answer
The first thing that came to mind was the CTA map. You know, the one with all the trains on it, Red, Pink, Brown, Purple, Blue, Orange, and Green lines. They have gifts at http://www.transitchicago.com to maybe give you some further inspiration, but I've always liked the graphic aspect of the route map, which was patterned after London's famous Underground map.

What's another Chicago symbol? Besides the Tommy gun, which is almost a century old and part of the past that most of the city is trying to forget. How about the Chicago Theater sign? Then there's the Cloud Gate (aka The Bean) sculpture in Millennium Park, the red Wrigley Field sign, Sears Tower (sorry, only tourists call it Willis), the Picasso statue in Daley Plaza, the Field Museum, the Hancock Building, or just the skyline? Most of those are iconic structures and would be easily recognizable in most forms, though there are undoubtedly others I've missed or that have more significance to you.

How to render them would be up to you because I don't know your level of training and experience, what kind access you have to tools, or your budget. I hope I didn't just point out the obvious and you maybe have something to start with.

Is it possible to have a wedding for under 3000?

Crystal

My husband and I are finally going to have the wedding he promised me, we got married in front of the justice of the peace. Anyway we are having a wedding at Mettle beach. Is it possible to have a wedding under 3000? Also any tips? Our colors are aquamarine and white.
@the second answer, we are not asking for gifts. This is something we are doing for ourselves and our families. It was not my choice to get married in front of the justice of the peace it was my husbands and I went along with it because I love him. How dare you call it a joke, I didn't ask for you snotty b**** a** opinion. I only asked if it was possible to have a wedding under 3,000. You have no idea why we got married in front of the justice of the peace or why we are having a wedding. Oh and FYI a lot of people have second and third weddings. Your nothing but a dumb a** with stupid unsolicited opinions. Go jump off a bridge b*****!!
Oh and its called eloping not a wedding!
Why can't people stop being so damn rude! I didn't ask for your opinions about if I was already married or not. If your going to be a bitch don't answer the damn question! Jeez I hate bitches!

Answer
Congrats! And yes, totally possible. My husband and I did our's for under 3000. Let me tell you, Pinterest will be your friend. If you aren't on Pinterest, go check it out now. It is incredible for wedding planning and ideas. Didn't exist when I got married, but I've used tons of ideas in planning friends' weddings. To keep your wedding inexpensive, plan on doing a lot of it yourself. It's a little more labor-intensive, but man, you will appreciate your wedding and love it even more when you've put a personal touch on everything.

Some things we did to keep it inexpensive:

*We designed our own invitations with Photoshop and then only had to pay for the ink and cardstock to print them at home. Look online for a design you really like, and see if you (or friends or family with computer skills) can design one like it.

*Call in favors. We had friends that did photography, floral design, wedding cake bakers, etc. As their gift to us, they gave us great deals for their trades. Everyone has something to offer.

*Catering is *expensive*. You can do it yourself. Either have an appetizer-only reception, dessert reception, or a very simple dinner. We bought a TON of huge frozen lasagnas, had all my girlfriends bake them and bring them, and popped them into rented chafing dishes. We had sides of french bread, salad, mousse, fruit salad, and a cheesecake bar. Our food only cost us $500, for 250 people!

*Instead of hiring a DJ, you can make a playlist of the music you want played, and give it to a trusted friend to man during the wedding.

Best Wishes!

Okay, so our 2nd anniversary is July 1st, and I'm having trouble thinking of gift ideas. He's 16 and I'm 19 and we aren't going to kiss or anything until we get married so anything like sex is out of the question. Also it can't be too big cuz I don't know how much he'll be spending on me.
Last year I got us bff necklaces becuz we were bffs first. But now I need a new idea. Thanx!

Answer
A special gift has to be totally unique so am thinking a nice handcrafted wooden accessory box. I gave my boyfriend a MarqART accessory box for his birthday a few months ago and he says he doesn't know how he managed before that. He now keeps all his stuff in it .. like coin collection, keys, mobile, etc and says he hasn't lost anything in a while .. earlier he was constantly looking for stuff.

One of the most amazing gifts i ever recieved from my best friend (who lives in another country from me) was a calender. For every month, she had stuck a picture of either her, me, or us together. It was for my 17th birthday back in 2010 and it was for 2011, but even today, in 2012, it hangs on my wall near my bed on a picture of the words 'i love *then my name is written here* that wasnt designated to a month. That calender means SO much to me. Maybe something similar for your friend?

Can a wireless adapter be built from scratch without software?

I'm running an experiment with a friend of mine involving long range communication, and I got the idea that perhaps as part of the process I should try to build my own wireless adapter. Mainly because I've been enjoying the hell out of scratch-making whizbangs and blinky things lately (thanks to Arduino of course, best-birthday-gift-EVER). Is there an easy way to just "brute force" it mechanically, as it were, or would it require a lot of custom programming as well? Normally I'd just buy a cheap adapter and take it apart to see how it works, but most of the project is running on junk, and I'm barely going to have enough for the remaining tools and supplies our junk pile doesn't cover, so that's not really in the cards. I'm certainly not a tech genius, but I know enough to make use of most schematics fairly easily. If any simple schematics exist, or anyone can give me even a "verbal" rundown of what would be necessary to hand make a wireless radio, I'd be most appreciative of the help. By the way, it doesn't have to be optimized by any means. At the moment, I've got a small bit of leeway with resistors, wire, and whatnot, so it's really just to get hands-on experience with the fundamental working order of the device on the construction level, as that particular field is sorely lacking in information compared to how much is posted online about signal propagation, etc. I just need a basic, garage-project rundown of what bone's connected to the wireless bone as it were to get me started. If it would end up costing more to build and program one than just to buy one, just say so, but if anyone can get me started, I really enjoy hands-on projects, and I've been learning quite a bit recently. I'd like to keep the roll going if there are any hidden geniuses among you. Schematics are preferred, if possible. Patented products will NOT be duplicated, only studied if that's what it takes. I'll accept ANY help.

P.S. Proof-reading this, I suddenly realize how the post sounds, so let me say it up front - no, I'm not planning on using it to steal wifi XD

I've got high-speed of my own. I just like playing with power tools and building stuff, even if it breaks on me later. No feeling quite like looking at a functioning, engineered object of one sort or another, and being able to say YOU made it. Some of you will understand that better than others.

Answer
No. There has to be a software user interface and firmware to tell the hardware what to do and when to do it.

There's nothing to prevent you from designing and assembling your own hardware but at some point you'll have to import existing software or design it yourself, and as firmware is far more fundamental to the hardware profile you'll have to design that from scratch. Not at all easy even for the companies which do it all the time, as evidenced by the regular software & firmware patches they have to release even on completed consumer-release versions of the hardware.

What is a good home made craft for an ill teacher?

Alyssa

my math teacher is very ill..she's so sick. the 8th grade is looking for some home made gift ideas to drop off at her house, but we don't really have any ideas what to give her.. she's had breast cancer and had to have a boob removed.... and she's around her 50's. Ideas, please!?

Answer
hey , sorry to say i also am clueless on homemade crafts.
but maybe you can pitch in and buy her a book, yes a book.
its titled "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom . [a great life lesson]
Its a great book about a teacher who got a disease but he kept on going
like nothing.
i read it and im not even the type of person who reads but it was a great book
life changing even! ; take it into consideration i guarentee it will make her
stronger .

I already have one that I won. It has the name brand ta ta tent on the tag. I would like to buy one for my friend, but where? I live in Canada.

Answer
Go here: https://www.uddercovers.com/cart At the end, enter promo code "christmas" and get the cover for free & pay $11.95 shipping. I ordered mine there & have since ordered as gifts. The promo codes come out periodically & are emailed to you.

I know this is not a nursing cover - but I got this email from the same place I get the udder cover emails. This time they offer a free car seat cover (just pay shipping). Again, just enter promo code "Christmas". Shipping is $12.95 for cover or $13.95 for whole set.
https://www.carseatcanopy.com/cart Or you can get a "whole caboodle" set for $29.95.

Hope that helps someone. I really do like the size of the nursing covers. My kids seem to fight using a cover, but they were awesome too on the stroller to block the sun because you can tie them on & in a pinch they can be a bib as well - big, but they work. LOL

OMG Karen shut your trap for real. If it is a nursing related question - you ought to just skip it. You do not know crap about proper nursing advice & you feel free to spew about it. Nursing covers are nice because they have a wire form up top so momma can see the baby the whole time & not have the babies face actually draped in fabric where it rebreathes it's own carbon dioxide. A throw won't do that. Then the whole pull a boob out for everyone to see is not a movement. In fact - cover your breasts they are gross & sexual has been the only movement & it came in about 1940 or so & has grown ever since. If you knew what you were talking about (ever) you would KNOW that. My gram (90 yrs old) will gladly tell you how women unbuttoned blouses & sat with MEN & nursed openly when she was young. It is only today they WE are perves & think that it's weird. You can look through the Library of Congress photo archives & find LOTS of pics from the 40's & earlier of women openly nursing all over the place. We used to be grown ups about it & understand babies had needs. Then formula companies got a hold on health "professionals" like you & bought your opinion & paid you to disperse it through the populous. They also became the big "educators" about breastfeeding (ironic eh?) It IS all well documented what they did - there are even interoffice memos that have been revealed - THEY instituted separating babies from mommas & putting them in nurseries to discourage nursing, etc, etc. before that time babies AWLSY roomed with moms. That isnt' "new" that is returning to what we did BEFORE formula companies got the bright idea they could force feed their products to babies through the loving hands of nurses, often without mom's permission. They paid for those wings to be ADDED to hospitals to facilitate NURSES bottle feeding & promoting their products to moms. Read "The Politics of Breastfeeding" - it has a ton of citations to document these things are fact & shows a lot of what has really happened in our culture & the sad view we grew to have about nursing. THEN nursing became something you only did because you couldn't afford formula - so it was embarrassing to nurse & THAT is when public nursing became taboo & looked down on, not because eo boobs - because you were dirty & poor. You ought to be embarrassed to say what you do & then claim to be an RN. I hope you are a troll & real RN's aren't actually like that in 2011.

Ideas for a christmas/birthday present to make for a guy?

Tenor Ninj

He's my bestfriend, and his birthday is two days after christmas so I'm getting him 2 presents: For the first one I got him a pocket watch, because his broke (so something cool/fashinable that he needs) and for the second gift I want to make something (something cute, because I like him and he knows it, but not TOO romantic becuase that'd be weird)

Answer
Stuff a Christmas hat with pillow stuffing and sew the bottom closed to make a pillow. Oh wait - this is for after Christmas. Get a 6 x 6 inch stretched canvas (at any hobby store or even Wal-mart) and make him a saying with Sharpie. Here are a few things I've done or are doing on plaques:
"My life is based on a true story. " "Drink coffee. Read books. Be happy." "I believe that everyone else my age is an adult whereas I am merely in disguise. Margaret Atwood." "I have so much to do I am going to bed." "It always seems impossible until it's done. Nelson Mandela." "A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything. Irish Proverb" and "Not all who wander are lost. J.R.R. Tolkien" You could also do a saying on a mouse pad or coaster. http://modpodgerocksblog.com/2011/09/diy-geek-coasters-by-man-podger-david.html#
or for something more intricate try making him a clock http://modpodgerocksblog.com/2011/09/diy-geek-coasters-by-man-podger-david.html#

Sam

My mom is the last person left for me to get a christmas gift for... and the most important.
Any good ideas? You dont have to go into great detail, just need a list of some things to jolt my brain..Thanks so much in advance.

Answer
Find the nearest Swarovski store near you.

There is nice stuff in all price ranges and no one is ever dissppointed getting something in a Swarovski box.

They make, ornaments, candle holders, picture frames, and whole entire lines of jewelry, as well as their line of collectibles. They also do charm bracelets now, with a slew of charms to pick from.

Check it out! You'll find something suitable for your mom, I guarantee it.

I have 2 sister, one is 22 and the other is 24. They both have boyfriends they've been with for a number of years. I usually get 4 separate gifts for them for xmas. This year I'd like to get them combined gifts, one gift for each couple. Remember these are for my sisters and their boyfriends - not just friends of mine, so no "romantic" couples gift ideas please! haha
Do you have any good suggestions!?
Help!
Thanks!!

Answer
How about movie or theater tickets? How about gift cards for special meals out?

Need some great gift ideas for a large family and little money?

Mz K

Times are not as good as they usually are this year. Does anyone have great gift ideas that cost little money? I have a large family. Serious answers please :)

Answer
what about a family tree dvd. copy it and give each member a copy to add their own family to it. i got one of these from an uncle some years ago. he put it together using old photos. starting from my great grandparents up to my youngest cousin. now i have to add my family to my copy and pass it on when the time is right. cheap to do. just collect all the photos you can and tell people you will return them, but dont tell them what they are for. then surprise them when everyone is together at chrimbo. if you can, copy it for them, if not they will be delighted to wait till after xmas.

what are good ideas for Christmas gifts for my nephews and nieces ?

great gift ideas for 6 yr old girls image

Joe G

they are 2 girls - ages 6 and 11, and 1 boy age 8.

I would like to keep the price for each gift low, like $10 or less for each gift.

thank you for your help

Answer
A book is always good. It is a gift that can keep on giving. The six yr old would probably like "Junie B" books, and the 11 yr. old would like any real chapter books -- try something by Meg Abbott. For the boy - any book that talks about farting, underwear, or other gross boy stuff is always fun.

Another great option - gift cards at their local fast food joint. I buy Burger King cards - then the kids can buy themselves a meal from ordering to paying. It makes them feel older.

One of my husbands christmas gifts is a guided ghost tour of the city that we live in and the historical buildings and sightings, etc. I purchased the tickets but rather than sending them out to us, we just pick them up at the door. I would like to give him something for christmas to reprsent this gift but can't come up with anything. Anyone have any good ideas as to what I could put under the tree in this case?

Answer
I would make a "flyer" on word or if you know a graphics program like photoshop, use that. Find pics on-line of the stuff you will see and put it in an envelope, when he opens it tell him what it is.

What to get a newborn for her first Christmas?

Due Oct 16

My husband and I are having a little girl next month (October) and in December we will be celebrating her first Christmas. What are some gift ideas to get her considering it will be her first Christmas but at the same time she will still be very small? Just because she's a newborn, I do not want that to be an excuse as to why she doesn't have a good First Christmas. What are some gift ideas?

Answer
Start a college fund/savings fund/buy stock for her. She will be too little to understand what christmas is. She wont be able to unwrap presents. So, it would be silly to be her lots of stuff that she doesn't need.

Start a fund of some sort and make it a family tradition to place money it every holiday. I think there are roughly 10 major holidays but you can add in as many as you would like. If you put in the amount of money she is based on her age at each holiday she could have a nice account started.

1 year of life = $10 (or give extra for her first christmas)
2 year of life = $20
3 = $30
4 = $40

Wrap it in a nicy shiny package and she will be happy
