Would you be able to help with gift ideas for ice fishing?

Q. My hubby loves ice fishing, I would like some small gift ideas for him, under $25. I do not fish and have no idea what most of the stuff on GanderMountain.com is used for! Can you help me with some stuff you would like to receive?

A. Well, it would help if we had an idea of what Mr. Melissa already HAS. Everyone needs an auger and a pole. A gear sled is handy, too, and a tacklebox full of stuff, but those things would cost more than 25 bones and he should have most of it anyway. If you're shooting for the under-$25 mark, I'm sure there are several things you could get him that he can use. First thing you do, consider a gift card to a sporting goods store or site that carries high-quality gear. You mentioned GanderMountain.com. Looks like a good site. If that's where he gets stuff, maybe you could just get him a gift card or certificate there?

If gift cards are just too impersonal or if he really wants some present to open, the next thing you do, you head to Cabella's, Bass Pro Shops, or any other reputable sporting good store and find a clerk who knows about ice fishing. He doesn't have to be an expert -- as long as he knows SOMEthing about the topic you can get some good info out of him. And you don't even have to buy anything there -- just browse and get yourself educated, then you can shop for stuff online. I am not that into ice fishing and I don't have much gear, so my wish list might differ from Mr. Melissa's, but, here you go:

A pack of Gitzit or Lindy ice fishing lures ($10 - $20)
I assume you know what lures are -- guys always want more lures, but get the kind HE wants. Maybe you can look in his tackle box or as one of his buddies. Brand matters.

Seat bucket ($10 - $25)
This is basically a 5-gallon bucket that can be used to hold stuff but it's a seat, too.

Small Plano tackle boxes ($5 - $10)
Little gear boxes are always welcome. Sometimes they come with stuff in em. I like Plano myself, for lots of kinds of fishing and other stuff besides fishing.

Tip-ups or rod holders ($15 - $30)
A rod holder does what it says -- holds your rod. Stick it in the ice and you can drink your coffee with both hands. A tip-up is a device that you attach a fishing rod to when a fish takes the lure or bait on the other end, a flag or some kind of indicator "tips up." It lets you leave a rod unattended some distance away so that you'll see when a fish is on. Some guys have them and use them, some don't have them but would use them if they had some.

Chipper/dipper ($10-$30)
This is a little thing that looks like it might have come from the kitchen -- looks like a scooper of some sort, but it's used to scoop slush out of your fishing hole and chip away accumulated ice.

Now, if you check out that stuff and conclude that he already has plenty of those things, consider stuff that is not necessarily fishing related but will be used for ice fishing. Heavy glove shells, fingerless mittens, wool socks, headlamp flashlight, gators (nylon boot leggings), or crampons (things that strap to winter boots that give you traction) could all be bought for less than $25. Any outerwear would be appreciated (hat, scarf, balaclava, UnderArmor). Ice fishermen always need a can of day-glo orange or green spray paint -- it's good to spray on your rod holders, dippers, boxes, etc., so you don't lose it in the snow.

Hope that helps!

What should i get my dad for christmas?
Q. He likes nj devils hockey and giants football. He also kinda a wine enthusist. I normally come up with good gift ideas for him but I am having trouble this year. Gifts under 25. If you have any questions about him then say them and I will add details then you can edit your answer

A. If i were you, i would get him a bottle of wine, and decorate it with New Jersey Devil pictures and the Giants football team. Then you can tell him to save it after he finishes the wine.

PS- are you old enough to buy wine? If your not, that might be an inappropriate gift...

What is a good homemade christmas gift for a guy that is under $25 to create?
Q. My fiance and I are getting married this summer and money is tight. We decided for X-mas that we would give each other a homemade gift that would cost $25 or less to create? I can't think of a good creative idea that is under $25.

A. Do you knit or crochet? I have used big needles or crochet hooks in the past to make along scarf to keep his neck warm in the winter. It's not hard to learn, and you can probably crank one out in a few hours.

What are good Christmas presents for 14 and 19 year old girls?
Q. My two nieces have everything they need. What are good Christmas presents for under $25 that they will appreciate.

Should I consider consumable items such as food or candy that at least can surely be used or try to get more material items such as jewelry or clothing? Books are out since neither cares to read. I have no idea of what kind of music would be appreciated.

I would never consider gift cards since I said that they had money and just giving more would not be something that they would remember.

A. As a twenty year old woman, I can honestly say that whether you like it or not, gift cards are the way to go. Societally, they used to be viewed as a very unthoughtful, unoriginal gift, but now they are viewed as a way to allow the recipient to choose the gift they most want- instead of what you want for them.
If you go with an item, I'd suggest some low key jewelry or a sweater, etc. Include a gift receipt, because as much as they love you, they'll probably take it back.
