Throughout history, who has created the most advanced and affluent civilizations in the world?

Q. exotic
china was way ahead of europe and middle east technologically and econonically for 1,820 years. What would the West be like without gunpowder and paper?

A. India has made the most inventions and discoveries!! India's intellectual contribution is more than every other civilization combined! The 19th and 20th centuries are the only 2 centuries that India was not the wealthiest civilization on the face of the planet. From when time began, up until, and including the 17th century, India was the centre of the world & was also the wealthiest civilization on the planet! THE WEALTH IN ANCIENT INDIA WAS MORE THAN TWICE THE WEALTH OF THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED! India is the world's oldest and oldest continuing civilization I will give you a few quotes for you to make up your mind:

We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.
- Albert Einstein

If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered on the greatest problems of life, and has found solutions, I should point to India.
- Max Mueller (German scholar)

India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.
- Mark Twain

If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India.
- French scholar Romain Rolland

Besides the discoverers of geometry and algebra, the constructors of human speech, the parents of philosophy, the primal expounders of religion, the adepts in psychological and physical science, how even the greatest of our biological and theologians seem dwarfed! Name of us any modern discovery, and we venture to say that Indian history need not long be searched before the prototype will be found on record. Here we are with the transit of science half accomplished, and all our Vedic ideas in process of readjustment to the theories of force correlation, natural selection, atomic polarity and evolution. And here, to mock our conceit, our apprehension, and our despair, we may read what Manu said, perhaps 10,000 years before the birth of Christ: The first germ of life was developed by water and heat. Water ascends towards the sky in vapors; from the sun it descends in rain, from the rains are born the plants, and from the plants, animals.
-Louis Francois Jacolliot (French diplomat & author)

The multiplicity of the manifestations of the Indian genius as well as their fundamental unity gives India the right to figure on the first rank in the history of civilized nations. Her civilization, spontaneous and original, unrolls itself in a continuous time across at least thirty centuries, without interruption, without deviation. Ceaselessly in contact with foreign elements which threatened to strangle her, she persevered victoriously in absorbing them, assimilating them and enriching herself with them. Thus she has seen the Greeks, the Scythians, the Afghans, the Mongols to pass before her eyes in succession and is regarding with indifference the Englishmen - confident to pursue under the accidence of the surface the normal course of her high destiny.
-Sylvain Levi (French Orientalist)

Since you also mention China, here is a quote from Hu Shih, the former Ambassador of China to USA:

"India conquered and dominated China culturally for 20 centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border."

Any one who has even a half - decent grasp of history would not even utter China in the same breath as India as India is a much more ancient civilization that has contributed a hell of a lot more than China! In fact, The Chinese learnt Yoga, martial arts and Buddhism from India! The first priest of the Shaolin Temple was from India! So let us understand human history before we make ludicrous comparisons!

What is the main cultural difference between India and china?

A. You can find quite a few here. Some countries have, some don't. Most of it have to do with their word/name history, i.e. etymology (so even you can help derive some!) First time at a Hindu temple, how do I make an offering?
Q. I'm visiting a Hindu temple for the first time, and I'm looking for a little help. I'd like to make an offering (flowers) to one of the gods; what is the proper procedure for doing this? Also, any advice on dress, behavior, and service proceedings would be so so helpful. Thanks!

A. >"I'm visiting a Hindu temple for the first time,"---

Let it be your pleasant experience

> I'd like to make an offering (flowers) to one of the gods

GOOD.Lord sri.Krishna in Bhagavad Geetha says:-

"Patram,(leaves)Pushpam(flowers),Phalam,(Fruits)Thoyam(water)"

In India Phalam=fruits are costly- well to do people can offer fruits(apple/orange/plum/banana/mango)--the preists after the ritualistic offeringgive back all-fruits --you can distribute the fruits-we call "Prasaadham"=God's gift--among your relatives, friends and poor people.--Flowers are a little cheap--in USA flowers are costly-fruits are a little cheap---Preists will keep the flowers on the Idol for the whole day-Patram=fragrant leaves--in india they are available "Free"-I do not know about other countries--Lord sri Ganesa(with an Elephant face=remover of all "Obstacles")--you can offer ANY leaf you get "Freely"-other Idols -"leaves"- there are some specifications-- Thoyam=very poor and very old people who can Not arrange to get Fruits/flowers/leaves can offer Pure Water to GOD--But your idea of flowers is GOOD.Give it to the priest--He will decorate the God(Diety) with flowers-he may/may not give one or two flowers back

Dress:- any DECENT dress--

Behaviuor:-Decent as required in any public place.

Service;-Priests will do the service--flowers-they will decorate the idol-you will not get back--fruits--ritualistic" "offering " to Deity(called "Naivedyam")-all fruits will be given back to you(normally we take fruits in EVEN numbers-2 or 6--or 12-.Hindu Scriptures say "One" fruit should be given back to the Preist for the ritualistic service he renders-we give..

Flower/Fruits/leaves/ -No charges. to the Temple or Preist

Other 'Special' services like-"praying for your/your family's welfare etc-Standrdised Vedic Recitations are there-the Preist will do-you have to pay a prescribed fee-very nominal- to Temple Authorities--it includes cost of fixed number of seasonal Fruits/Flowers(in USA -raisins as flowers are costly)+Preist service+ Temple maintainence

Preists'service:-they are Not to demand any charge as per Temple Norms--

but normally WE all Hindus use to give a "Token"gift(in India Rs 5 to 10=US one-two Dimes=US 10-20 Cents). In USA we give US--$1 to $-5--in USA even a barbar/taxi driver demands a "Tip"--poor fellow the Preist spends some time in Vedic reciting for our welfare. We Hindus feel we can NOT take "Free" service from him--it will make us indebted to him even in the next birth(Karma)-so we pay a little for his service. But this is ONLY for Special servicelike "Archana"etc--for ordinary offering of flowers/fruits NO charge.
P.S.:- Phalam(fruits)-Thoyam(Water) are missing in the main post
