He likes to send goofy stuff to our teenage son for Christmas. This year we are sending the grandparents a gag gift package. We have already picked up a huge Remote Control and Calculator. We're thinking about getting them The Clapper and possibly a Giant Clock. We need some funny gift ideas. They have a great sense of humor. Can you give us some ideas on what kind of products we could buy that old people could use. Inexpensive ideas please. That way we can include several things in this gift box.
Thanks!

Christmas gift ideas for my future inlaws?

Donna C

Last year, before I was engaged to my fiance I gave his family a big basket that was just filled with a variety of things that they all like. It was good and appropriate because I didn't know them too well. This year I have to step it up a notch....

I'm thinking about giving his 3 sisters (one teen 2 young adults) snuggies (those blankets with sleeves). I really think they would like it, and I don't think we're close enough for personal gifts. Any other ideas?

Also...I honestly have no idea what to give his parents. We're also not too too close, but we're working on changing that (I live 4 hours away so its taking some time). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Answer
I've got an easy out.

Your fiance should purchase the gifts for his family . . . as supposedly he will know best what they would like. He puts both names . . . his name and your name . . . on the gifts as the givers.

You do the same . . . taking care of the gifts for your side of the family. You add future hubby's name to your gifts.

My advice? In gift-giving circumstances, act like you are already married. Buy one set of gifts for each side of the family. Put both bride's name and groom's name on the gifts as givers.

By buying only one set of gifts (not two), you two can save all that extra money for the wedding.

Gift Exchange Ideas?

Our family continues to grow as well as the list on my christmas list. I am all for ideas where I don't have to buy everyone something. What does your family and friends do?

Answer
We buy a gift for our parents, sometimes the three of us pitch in for one big item, other times just small things. We also buy for all the nieces and nephews because they are all under 5, but that will be come a gift exchange in the future between the cousins. All the adults exchange names and there is a $35 limit.
On my inlaws side, gifts are only purchased for the kids, as Christmas should be for the little kids to enjoy. Christmas has become too much about buying gifts and not really about enjoying time with family and if Christian, Jesus Christ.

Need Christmas Gift Ideas for Inlaws?

Erin

I have to clue what to get for my Husbands parents. They love to travel and are religious people.. However they have everything. I normally like to give gifts based on hobbies or what is needed. We thought of gift baskets but they are given food by most people, they like to eat out a lot but i feel like everything i can get them is something that is an average part of their life. Any ideas for the regular traveler? Any one know of good Audio books?

Answer
a large screen garmin with extra memory cards so they can go online and upload different travel countries to different cards? i say garmin because you can customize its appearance and even the voice it tells you directions in. i tried a tom tom and it just seemed more like a toy for a 7 year old than an actual intelligent device i would trust to get me where i need to be. religious means you can order customized bible covers with their names, or maybe a family tree design and their names and anniversary with their children/grand-children's names on the branches below them. new toiletry cases for shampoos as even the most cautious traveler has the occasional shampoo spill which means its pretty on the outside but not so much inside anymore. gift certificates to the restaurants they enjoy while traveling. portable dvd player for when in hotels. a laptop, or wifi card for a laptop if they already have one. if they drive around the country a gift certificate for a tune up and tire inspection would be useful and let them know you care enough to make sure the vehicle is road ready and they will get to their destination safely. but nothing you can give them will mean more to them than time, and knowing you want and enjoy their company. for sentimental value how about a calendar with dates written in pencil that you would like to have them over for a bbq, or dinner, or to take them out just so you can catch up and bond? and include a pen so that they can make it a set date once you agree on the date and time. :)

Gift idea for the inlaws?

Ok, well they're not technically in-laws yet. However, I am very close to my boyfriend's family. We've been together for three years now and christmas is coming up. I want to get his parents somethign but I can't think of anything! I was thinking of the digital frames but they already have one and I'm really blankingout. Any ideas? They're both in their mid 40s if that helps any. Both very in love with each other. Very funny and young at heart.

Answer
Maybe you could get them a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant or tickets to a sporting event/concert/ stand-up comedy show they would both enjoy. You could get them something for their home, such as a piece that would complement their current decor or a fun appliance, such as an ice cream maker.

If you're willing to take the time and effort, make them a photo album or a scrapbook that reflects their relationship. Ask your boyfriend for photos of them when they were younger and ask him if there is anything you can include that will remind them of some of their best times together. Or if you have a lot of photos and/or mementos from times that you have spent together with them, you can use them.

You can also take them out to a nice dinner or plan an outing they will enjoy.

Good luck and happy holidays!

MiKayla

okay ive already made my mom, step mom, and step sis, now all i need is stuff for my dad and step brother....i am short on money this christmas and its almost christmas and i need some quick and easy christmas gift ideas. i want it to be more personal than it would be just buying something!

Answer
My grandmother and her mother inlaw (my great grandmother) had little money most Christmas's. One year they got cheap string ball ornaments (foam balls wrapped with colored string) and using pins, various beads, and various pieces of ribbon they decorated the ornaments. What was a cheap, easy decoration has become a treasured family heirloom. People ask where my grandma bought those ornaments and family members fight over their favorite. She gave each member one ornament for their tree.

What kinds of gifts are good for inlaws?

I'm not fond of mine, but I need good ideas for this holiday season coming up. I don't have a lot of money so I usually start now and buy a gift each paycheck so by xmas everyone has something nice. I really am lost this year because we are just cordual with one another and they are not close. I have to do all the shopping since my lazy, careless husband wouldn't even think to give them a card. I wish so much I didn't care.

Answer
Do they have any hobbies - travel or gardening, etc. You could get them a book that relates to their hobbies - they can both read and enjoy it. When all else fails, there's the good old magic gift certificate. Get one for a nice restaurant so they can have a night out. If you have live theatre near you, you could get them tickets for a show, or tickets for a concert that's coming after the New Year. Even though you don't have much of a relationship with them, the gift is also from their son so it still should be nice and something relevant to their lives.

What to get inlaws that don't want me to spend money on a present?

Q. They are really my boyfriend of 4 years' parents, but that is too long to fit in the title ;P

Anyway, they know that I am pressed for money and time because I'm at an important year in school. They told me not to get them anything and focus on saving money and studying. However, I know they are getting me something. Do you have any good ideas of something I can make or do for them that won't really break that rule? Cookies, etc?

Thanks ;)

A. Here are a few places where you can make gifts, and they come with instructions...

Another great place to go is www.instructables.com, they have any tutorial imaginable for doing it yourself projects and all instructions are written and with step by step pictures.

I hope this helps.

How can I feel better with my mother inlaw?
Q. I recently found out that i am pregnant with my husbands and mine first child -- very exciting! However I've seen the way my mother in law acts with my now six month old neice, and I'm scared that she will be the same with my child.
It's not that she's being abusive or mean to her, but she spoils her rotten, and goes against everything that my brother and sister inlaw say they want to do for her.
I appreciate that it's her first grandchild and she may go a little nuts over her, but I don't want to be forced into doing anything or have her teach my child that if mom and dad say no then they can go to grandma.

How can I communicate to her that this is our baby and we get to make the final decisions on things?

A. Hi there

This is a tough one, but the most important thing is not to let this interfere with the joy you have right now, of being pregnant.

It's very important that you and your husband provide a united front on this issue. If he lets her do anything she wants because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings, you will have issues.

My own mother wants to do anything and everything for my son, and all along, we have said, "Please make sure that if you're looking at a major purchase, you talk with us first. We have very specific ideas about raising our son." Once, she sent him money (she lives away, so gifts just "appear" in the mail!) for a mobile phone-- at age ten! And my husband and I have all along said "No." So I contacted her and said "We aren't allowing him a mobile phone. What would you like me to do with this cheque?" She had us tear it up, and she actually said, "He's my grandson, I should be able to get him anything I want" (I can almost see you nodding and thinking this is what your mother-in-law will say), and at that time, I said to my mother, "But this is my son, and I live with him every day, and we know what we want for him. Please don't make big purchases without asking."

As for all the other things, when gifts arrive, we put them away until a special occasion arises. I know some of it isn't about "things," but about behaviour, and we make it as clear as possible to our son that some things are not allowed at home, that are only allowed at grandma's. That's a little complex for a littlie to understand, but if you keep it up, that may be the best you can do.

As grandparents they do have "spoiling" rights, but not "ruining" rights. Keep careful watch, and allow both to indulge a little. It's what keeps the grandparent-grandchild bond special. But set your boundaries, otherwise everyone will be miserable, including the "spoiled" child!

Enjoy your pregnancy!! (And don't forget that a few subtle hints along the way won't hurt either!)
