What are some good gift ideas for a pollyanna gift game christmas party?

Q. Some friends and I are having a pollyanna gift giving party/christmas party. We set a $20.00 or more price limit and it's for a group of 14 years old. It's also a mixed party so I need gift ideas for something both girls and guys would like. Thanks !

A. Christmas is the time of year when many families spend more money than they have to create a holiday to remember for their children. With the economy in a downward spiral, saving where you can is important. Christmas is a time of giving, and this is a perfect chance to teach your children to give back.

Giving back

There are many families that are in worse economic shape than you are. Taking the family to a soup kitchen to volunteer during the holiday season will help make it memorable for everyone. It will also help your children appreciate what they have much more.
Thrift and consignment stores

Shopping at thrift stores you can find many items that can be the perfect gift for your child. Most items are gently used and look brand new. You may find the occasional new item that still has the tag on. Starting in these stores is the perfect way to find a multitude of gifts at a fraction of the cost.

Dollar stores

Looking at stores such as the Dollar Store or Five Below you can find some great gifts at a cheap price. Purchasing several of these types of gifts can help fill under the tree and stockings. This can help save money while still making Christmas look plentiful.

Pollyanna

If you have a large family buying many gifts can be daunting. A fantastic way to save money is to do a Pollyanna gift exchange. This is basically putting everyones name in a hat and drawing a name of one person to purchase a gift. This will save an enormous amount of money. Instead of buying gifts for ten people you will only be buying for one person.

Cut your gift list

When economic times are good, giving to everyone can make one feel wonderful. Now may be the time to take a look at the list of people you normally give gifts to and decide who you can eliminate from gift giving. This will probably be the hardest part to do as you dont want to offend anyone. You can choose to give a nice Christmas card instead. In these times it is necessary.

The important thing to remember is Christmas is a time to enjoy your family and appreciate your loved ones. While it may be a challenge for children to understand making a memorable Christmas does not mean you have to spend a lot of money.

Would you be able to help with gift ideas for ice fishing?
Q. My hubby loves ice fishing, I would like some small gift ideas for him, under $25. I do not fish and have no idea what most of the stuff on GanderMountain.com is used for! Can you help me with some stuff you would like to receive?

A. Well, it would help if we had an idea of what Mr. Melissa already HAS. Everyone needs an auger and a pole. A gear sled is handy, too, and a tacklebox full of stuff, but those things would cost more than 25 bones and he should have most of it anyway. If you're shooting for the under-$25 mark, I'm sure there are several things you could get him that he can use. First thing you do, consider a gift card to a sporting goods store or site that carries high-quality gear. You mentioned GanderMountain.com. Looks like a good site. If that's where he gets stuff, maybe you could just get him a gift card or certificate there?

If gift cards are just too impersonal or if he really wants some present to open, the next thing you do, you head to Cabella's, Bass Pro Shops, or any other reputable sporting good store and find a clerk who knows about ice fishing. He doesn't have to be an expert -- as long as he knows SOMEthing about the topic you can get some good info out of him. And you don't even have to buy anything there -- just browse and get yourself educated, then you can shop for stuff online. I am not that into ice fishing and I don't have much gear, so my wish list might differ from Mr. Melissa's, but, here you go:

A pack of Gitzit or Lindy ice fishing lures ($10 - $20)
I assume you know what lures are -- guys always want more lures, but get the kind HE wants. Maybe you can look in his tackle box or as one of his buddies. Brand matters.

Seat bucket ($10 - $25)
This is basically a 5-gallon bucket that can be used to hold stuff but it's a seat, too.

Small Plano tackle boxes ($5 - $10)
Little gear boxes are always welcome. Sometimes they come with stuff in em. I like Plano myself, for lots of kinds of fishing and other stuff besides fishing.

Tip-ups or rod holders ($15 - $30)
A rod holder does what it says -- holds your rod. Stick it in the ice and you can drink your coffee with both hands. A tip-up is a device that you attach a fishing rod to when a fish takes the lure or bait on the other end, a flag or some kind of indicator "tips up." It lets you leave a rod unattended some distance away so that you'll see when a fish is on. Some guys have them and use them, some don't have them but would use them if they had some.

Chipper/dipper ($10-$30)
This is a little thing that looks like it might have come from the kitchen -- looks like a scooper of some sort, but it's used to scoop slush out of your fishing hole and chip away accumulated ice.

Now, if you check out that stuff and conclude that he already has plenty of those things, consider stuff that is not necessarily fishing related but will be used for ice fishing. Heavy glove shells, fingerless mittens, wool socks, headlamp flashlight, gators (nylon boot leggings), or crampons (things that strap to winter boots that give you traction) could all be bought for less than $25. Any outerwear would be appreciated (hat, scarf, balaclava, UnderArmor). Ice fishermen always need a can of day-glo orange or green spray paint -- it's good to spray on your rod holders, dippers, boxes, etc., so you don't lose it in the snow.

Hope that helps!
