Christmas gift exchange game ideas?

m_lvb18

My extended family instead of drawing names and buying presents for them, we've decided to do a game and girls buy a girl gift and guys buy a guy gift. We need an idea for a game to play to exchange. we'd also like to be able to steal gifts.

We do a gift exchange grab bag thing. Basically all the presents are in a big pile...you could seperate these out into boy pile and girl piles. Then we draw numbers. Person 1 goes and picks out a gift and opens it. Person 2 can either steal Person 1's gift that they just opened or grab a new present to open. It goes on like that until the last person has opened a gift. We also have rules that the 3rd owner of a gift is the final owner. That sometimes comes into play if there is a REALLY popular item and everyone keeps stealing it.

What exactly is a white elephant gift exchange? I'm doing my first white elephant gift exchange ever. Please help me figure out what it is and what gifts are appropriate...maybe name some you've received or given...

I stopped past a local thrift store and picked up an 8-track tape (in excellent condition) titled Jesus Loves You (pretty sure it contains traditional christian hymns), a cook book called West Coast Cook Book (copyrighted 1965, in great condition) and a book called Mixed Roots: a Guide for Jewish Grandparents of Interfaith Grandchildren (in excellent condition) where someone carefully highlighted all most important parts on every single page. For all of them it was under $5, including tax. And the pièce de résistance: a bag of working, but used light bulbs (incandescent/flood blubs) I've had in my cupboard for 2 and a half years (maybe 7 - 10 of them total). It's one gift wrapped wrapped in a box with the light bulbs put into a gift bag.

Answer
The idea of a white elephant gift is that in some culture (I'm guessing in India?) if the king wanted to give you a special gift he would give you a gift of a rare white elephant. You would have to cherish it and take care of it for the rest of its life while it ate you out of house and home. So on one hand it was a gift and an honor, but on the other hand you really didn't want it. It has evolved to mean exchanging gifts that no one wants. For example, one guy emptied his closet of his ugly ties. Another friend painted a pretty picture of a road running through the woods, over a bridge and up to a distant barn - but she forgot to put a stream in the picture. The bridge was over nothing. And then there was the puzzle with one piece missing. Sounds like your gift will fit right in.
