Alex

she wants to go to a teen club but I don't think their gonna let her and her friends in, but in new York. any of you guys know any teen clubs I can get her and her friends into?
we already did a house party last summer. but something different slumber parties is a really good idea i might take that one..but still waiting for new answers

Answer
No, I agree that the teen clubs would probably be strict about age. Will have to put that one on hold until she turns 13. Here are some other ideas...
1. Check the rec. dept. to see if they have any middle school dances this summer. Could do that, then come home for cake & ice cream. Ask them, too, about Teen Night at a swimming pool & about age restrictions. Could see if a city pool is open to a private party on other nights. You'd probably have to hire a DJ, though.
2. See if there are any restaurants with bars & karaoke nights that allow teens.
3. A slumber party with karaoke might be possible at home. A couple I know used to run the karaoke at one of those bars & also did private parties, bringing in all the equipment. Depends on the sound level & how your neighbors would react. Also, I think they primarily used oldies as music, & these might be totally unfamiliar music to 12-yr-olds. Would be great if reggae or hip hop can be is available for karaoke.
4. Some pizza places offer a free party room if you have 20 or more people. That's what I did for my 50th birthday. Could eat, have a sing-along & a game or two while waiting for the food, then have the cake, which I brought. They set up the cake table & provided dessert plates & clean forks.
5. If it's just something different that they want, & if you have any Indian restaurants nearby, some of them may have an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, like 11:30-2 pm. Call around & find out or check the ads.
6. One organization that I was in used a Nepalese restaurant several times for private parties. They were closed on Sundays, but fixed a buffet for us & let us use it for Sunday noon-2 with a minimum of 20 people. On one Saturday night, they were open but set up a long skinny table for about 20 of us & for some reason, did a buffet that night, even though it was usually only for the lunch hour. I was in charge one time & made an appointment to meet with the manager in advance & arranged it for a Sunday noon. It was difficult talking to the employees to find out when the manager would be in. He knew fluent English, but his employees knew very little. (just a warning) We had an interesting conversation & made our arrangements.
7. Other types of inexpensive all-you-can-eat-buffet restaurants may also have party rooms. (My mother had a family reunion in one of those.) Can probably eat the ice cream & desserts included with the meal, adding a candle to your daughter's serving, rather than bringing in your own cake.
8. A skating rink may have a party room for rent, too. There may be a d.j. who will announce the birthday or take requests for special songs, but I don't know.
9. There may be a covered area (gazebo) in a park for picnics that can be reserved for rent. Probably books up well in advance & might be expensive.
10. Could have a movie party at home...sandwiches or pizza, veggie & chips tray with hummus dip, popcorn, cake & ice cream, & beverage. Can buy those clear plastic wine glasses & serve mineral water, both plain & flavored, & serve it in wine glasses. Sparkling apple cider can also be used in wine glasses.
11. Might have an ice cream party at home with pink & white striped decor. If there's a commercial ice cream shop, they might have a party room or the whole ice cream parlor might be open to a private party when they're closed.
12. A coffee house might be open to her age group & have poetry night, some with poetry set to guitar music. Would want to know what they have other than coffee, such as soft drinks or herb tea.
13. Sometimes an animal shelter will have a room that they offer as a party room & will give a guided tour of the facilities. Guests can be asked to bring gifts to the animals from a suggested list. (toys, blankets, towels, pet food, etc.)
14. A neighbor of mine whose daughter was once that age took a station wagon full of girls down to China Town in San Francisco once for poking around in the shops & to eat Chinese food. With the size of The City, it might have been an overwhelming task to decide on sights to see, but by focusing on a small area, they were able to have a good time in a manageable way. There may have been only about 4 girls, which doesn't sound too bad for a parent.
15.Could take about 3 girls & your daughter to see a live musical on stage, & that wouldn't be too bad in terms of prices & supervision.

I don't know if when you say New York if you mean NYC or somewhere in the state. Maybe there will be something here that will be possible that she will like. I've never been there, so I don't know.

I want a list of books appropriate for gifted 11 year olds?

Meagan

We are starting a gifted ed program at our school and we want to give our talented readers books to read that are in a higher reading range but appropriate for their maturity level

Answer
"Enders Game" by Orson Scott Card is a MUST HAVE for every advanced young reader! They will LOVE this book!
If, by some form of magic you don't already know about this book, its about a young boy (10 or 11, in fact, if I remember correctly) named Ender who is taken by his family

For girls I would suggest any book by Francesca Lia Block,... books like the "Weetzie Bat" series. They are very cute, interesting, quirky and full of curiosity and growing up awkwardness of that age. Its about a rather... accepting family,... so, there are things like the loving acceptance of homosexuality and playful Paganism in that series, and allusions to things like fairies and little magical creatures in her other books. If you find these ideas offensive, well.. I warned ya.

The Lemony Snickett, 'Series of Unfortunate Events' is a very VERY cute series... dark humor for kids.

Terry Pratchett's "Bromeliad Trilogy" is very cute, short and a fun read. Its not particularly advanced, but its very good. The book titles themselves are "Truckers", "Diggers" and "Wings".

Harry Potter. Its true... once you get to the 3rd book, they are not only more advanced language-wise, but the story actually starts being worthwhile, too.

Those are all books targeted for that 10-15 age group...

If you are looking for things that are still more advanced I would try:

"Cats Cradle" by Kurt Vonnegut. This is introduce some good vocabulary and some philosophical thinking, but its a very clean, funny and AMAZING book. I mean,.. this is required reading for every human being, if you ask me. Its clean and BEAUTIFUL! This will also introduce them to "style" as an art when it comes to storytelling and writing.

"Warlock" by Wilbur Smith
Historical fiction about ancient Egypt. There are scenes describing the past genital mutilation of a sub character who is a Eunuch, but nothing explicit. You can decide if they are mature enough to be okay with that. My guess is they see worst things on network tv than the book descriptions. But its a very enthralling story and kids LOVE ancient Egypt.. I mean WHO DOESNT?!

"The Diary of Anne Frank"
Beautiful, heartbreaking... you know how it goes.

"Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "Farenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury
Beautiful writing, great stories.... very engaging, a little scary, very thoughtful books. I LOVE Bradbury's writing nearly as much as Vonnegut's... and I wish I had discovered them earlier.

"Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick
Very touching story about two young teens teaming up to make up for each other's deficiencies, finding real friendship and loss in the process.

"The Dragons Eye" by Stephen King
I know what you're thinking.. STEPHEN KING?! But this was a children's/teen book he wrote for his son, you know ONE book he could allow his 13 yr old (at the time) to read of his work. Its King's easy-going writing style with a great fantasy story about kings, princes, murderous plots and courage. Great story, fun book. Like many of the books listed, its full-length (500+pages)

'The Chronicles of Narnia' series by C.S. Lewis.
They are a classic and for very good reason. Fantastical story, poetic, thoughtful.

"The Lord of the Rings" series by J.R.R Tolkien
I shouldn't have to describe this one to you. I hated it as a kid, personally, but I just didn't have the stomach for magical rings and gnomes and orcs and stuff as kid. But thats just me... everyone else LOVED this one.

"Redwall" series by Brian Jaques.
A mouse thats a knight of sorts... only not in that tacky Beverly Cleary type way. Another one I didn't like as a kid... but I admit it has its merits and it was just personal taste, not style or story that I didn't like.

Thats all I can think of for the time being, but Im sure you'll get other wonderful suggestions!
