Need good ideas for tasteful, but inexpensive baby shower gifts.?

Q. A couple of ladies in my church are having babies soon and since their due dates are so close together they decided to share the baby shower. The thing is, I suck at buying gifts and I don't have all that extra money to spend. I want to give nice gifts that are rather reasonably priced, and I definitely do not want to buy tacky or stupid things.
Are gift cards an acceptable baby shower gift?

A. Gift cards inside a regular card are perfectly acceptable and awesome! You will probably see several people do the same thing. Other fairly inexpensive things that almost every new baby will need are wipes, pacifiers, and onesies. A container of wipes will run $2-4, pacifiers are $1-7, and onesies run $2 and up. All of these prices depend on where you buy them. If you do decide to get pacifiers, make sure they are labeled 0+ months or 0-3 months.

The family I babysit for is having a baby in several weeks. I'd like to get a gift for him, but what?
Q. The children I babysit are about to get a baby brother! I watch them twice a week and have been sitting for their family for nearly a year. I am very close with the parents and with the children, ages 1 and 3. I don't have a large budget, but I'd really like to get something for the new baby. Any ideas? I want it to be something that is meaningful.

Don't know if this is in the right category, but I tried...

A. I would offer to watch the 3 and 1 year old even while they are home if they need an extra hand while they are getting accustomed to their newest addition. If you'd still like to purchase a gift (with the money that they pay you hehehe) then, maybe movie tickets for a night out and a free night of baby sitting or a cute little outfit most people get a lot of newborn and 0-3 month size so go for 6 months or 6-9 months size!

35 weeks pregnant and bored. How can I pass the time?
Q. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and have Pupps (the pregnancy rash) so I'm rpetty ready to have my baby girl in my arms rather than my belly at this point. What can I do to pass time? I have 31 days left and want to do either safe/cheap outings or pregnancy related things like packing for labor, etc.

Can you give me just a few ideas?

A. Clean the entire house-- even the baseboards and kitchen cabinets.
Wash all the newborn & 0-3 month baby clothes. Sort the others by size.
Make an inventory of all your baby items to see if you're missing something.
Buy diapers, wipes, really thick pads (for you)
Make little notes for your house guests/helpers: How to do laundry on your machine, where you keep the extra TP, etc.
Wash all your linens like the mattress protector and pillow protectors.
Read a book. You'll be too tired to do this in a few weeks.
Garden -- just don't use chemicals & wear gloves.
Start filling out your baby book.
Make a few of your favorite meals and freeze them.
Put together any baby gear that you have.
Go through your regular clothes and put aside the items you think you'll be able to wear this summer.
Buy thank you notes and stamps for the all the gifts you'll recieve.
Take a few pictures of yourself in yourself 9th month.
Pick out your baby announcment cards.

my friends having a baby shower; what should i get her?
Q. I don't want to do toys or something like that I want to get her something really useful.... I'm thinking diapers and maybe some nice baby shampoo lotion etc...
I don't really know, what are some essential things that people wouldn't think of to get her?

A. Ask her where she is registered. The absolute BEST thing you can get a pregnant woman for her shower is something she has actually registered for because if she's registered for it then clearly it is something that she wants and will use.

If she's not registered anywhere, then a gift card for someplace that sells baby stuff would probably be the single most useful thing you could get her as that way she can just get whatever she needs after she sees what all she gets from other people. A gift card to a favorite restaurant (for after the baby comes) is also a nice idea that most people don't ever think of. Cloth diapers are very useful, even if your friend plans on using disposable diapers, because they can be used for tons of things other than diapering (such as burp cloths, cleaning rags, etc). I would be careful about getting her disposable diapers as they have only one use and babies can outgrow them (if you do decide to go with disposable diapers I would strongly recommend buying larger diapers that she will need when the baby is a little older rather than the newborn size which most babies outgrow very quickly). Diaper wipes are a pretty safe and useful idea, since the baby can't outgrow them and they can be used for things other than wiping baby's bottom. Safety things, like outlet covers, stove knob covers, toilet locks, etc are useful and something that many first time parents don't even think about when registering.

I would skip the shampoo/lotion, and pretty much all bath stuff, if I were you. I got SO much baby bath stuff at my shower that it isn't even funny...I probably have enough to get through at least the first YEAR if not more (and I'm not exaggerating about that, much as I wish I was). I would also avoid blankets. They are useful, but it is something that everyone else is going to think to get them. If you decide to get her a cute outfit or two, pick 6+ month sizes. She'll probably get so much newborn, 0-3, and even 3-6 month clothes that the baby will probably outgrow most of them before she gets a chance to use them.
