Engagement party gift ideas?

Davina Lop

I'm attending my cousin and his fiancée engagement party next weekend and I have no idea what kind of gift to give them since they already live with each other and have everything they need for their house. I was thinking of just buying them a card and putting $100 dollars in it. Is money a good idea or should I get them an actual gift.

Answer
I agree, most people do not consider the engagement party to be a gift giving event, it IS the gift!
You can't go wrong with just a nice card.

If you wish to give a gift, cash or a boxed gift, fine, you can. But do know that you might be invited to lots of wedding events. Perhaps more than one engagement party. Perhaps the shower, or more than one. Then the wedding itself. Perhaps even a bachelor, or bachelorette party.
It would be nice to give them some money up front, I'm sure they would appreciate it. If you can afford it, why not?

This is a good time for the family to give heirloom or new bought gifts for the wedding, like a cake server and knife, or toasting glasses.
Also a good time to hand down heirlooms for their house, or jewelry.
Also for the family to chip in with financial help.

Books on weddings are a good present.
a bottle of champagne intended to be opened at this party, or for another time, or a bottle of nice wine is good.
Photo albums and scrapbooks would be fine too.

Gift for an engagement party?

Meg

First time I go to an engagement party. Do I have to take a gift? Is it costumery? If so, what gifts are adequate to take for the couple? Your help is desperately needed. I have no idea what to do.

Answer
An engagement is not a reason to give a gift. Just because someone agrees to marry another person, this does not entitle them to a gift. An engagement party is not a gift giving event. Some people may give a gift, but that is not the purpose of an engagement party.

Typically engagement parties are thrown so the immediate family of the bride and groom to be can meet one another. These days young adults have entitlement issues and think they deserve a party because they have fallen in love and decided to get married.

There are bridal showers given to the bride once a wedding date has been set. That IS a gift giving event. There are bachelor parties, baccalaureate parties and other get togethers where the friends of the marrying couple can celebrate the upcoming wedding. Like I said, engagement parties are supposed to be for the families to get to know one another. All of the engaged couples friends probably already know one another.

But, no, there is no gift at an engagement party. It would be nice to give them a card of congratulations, though.

engagement party gift ideas?

I am the maid of honor and I have no idea what people give for engagement parties! They don't have a registry set up. They are in their mid-20's...any ideas??

Answer
Where are you from?
Engagement parties are gift giving events in Australia.

When I go to an engagement party I alway give a $50 gift card from a homewares store. That way they get to choose what they need and what matches their decor.

If you want to get them something a little personal, why don't you search through your photos, find a beautiful photo of the couple and have it framed. A friend did that for my birthday (a photo of my fiancé, our baby and myself). I loved it. By far the best gift and it was personal too.

What I mean by what is an engagement party: I mean is it a party that you announce it for the first time OR that u have already announced and you are just celebrating it. Do u do invites? what can I do for mine?

Answer
An engagement party has a specific purpose and that is to formally announce the engagement of Mary Smith to John White. The party is usually hosted (planned, organized, and paid for) by the girl's parents. And if the girl's parents are unable to host the party then it can be hosted by the boy's parents or a close friend or relative. The party should take place within 4-6 weeks of the presentation of the engagement ring or proposal of marriage. The couple should NOT host their own engagement party unless there are no other alternatives.

The formality of the party can range from a three course dinner in the banquet room of a hotel to a backyard barbecue at someone's home. Printed invitations with a RSVP should be mailed out at least two weeks in advance of the party.

An engagement party is not a gift giving event so the couple should not be registered with any wedding or bridal registry until after the party has taken place.

The invitation guest list can be as long or as short as you wish. You can reserve a table at a nice Italian restaurant for ten people or you can rent the local community hall and invite two hundred people.

Ideas for outdoor engagement party brunch?

Amarys Per

i'm having an engagement party for myself and fiance (we're hosting) this summer...it's an outdoors brunch. i'm looking for ideas as to what type of music and games...etc. we should have, if we should have any music and games for that matter. i'm pretty new at this whole planning thing
deciding to add that i know the brides parents are supposed to host this but my fiance and i lost both our parents.

Answer
It's fine to host your own engagement party, as long as you make it clear to anyone who asks that you do not want gifts. These aren't for gifts to begin with, even when a parent throws it. As to what to do, I've never been to an engagement party with games and music. That doesn't mean you can't do it, but you might have trouble getting ideas. Also, they are usually on a weekend night and very similar to a casual dinner party.

Also, just as an fyi since you say you're new to all this. You don't have to have one of these unless you want to. Most people don't do them, since the original reason for them was for the parents to meet and both sides get to know the wedding party. People are too separated today for this!
