Birthday gift ideas for a 9 year old boy?

My long-distance nephew will be turning 9 soon. I'm unsure as to what to get him. I'm reluctant to give him a gift card because it's so inpersonal. What do 9-year-old boys like these days?

Nerf guns and water guns are loved by so many people and such a classic. However if their parents are the slight bit uneasy about the idea, go with something else. Other good ideas are video games, remote control cars/boats/helicopters and even kites. If his birthday is in summer, you could make him a summer fun back, with a basket and some sunblock, a fun beach towel, a hat with his favorite team or character on it, and some summer snacks (like fruit by the foot, ice pops, candy). im a 22 year old female & i have a 13 year old sister & i love her to death! i want to buy her a gift. some matching jewelery maybe. like a necklace or braclet or ring. but im on a budget. any ideas? :) i want it to mean alot. shes my best friend & sister & she means the world to me! best sister ever!!!! hahahah but i dont have alot of money but i dont want something cheap and tacky i want the jewerly to look nice and classy.
i would like writing that says something about sisters but nothing cheap or tacky like icing something. classy :)
