What kind of gift to I give a friend that just graduated with a Doctorate?

My closet friend from college just completed her PhD and she is graduating soon to make it official. I won't be able to attend the graduation but I wanted to get her a present to congratulate her on getting her doctorate but I have no idea what would be an appropriate gift. Any suggestions?

A great graduation gift would be a fine piece of Wall Art or even a handcrafted wooden jewelry box if she is into jewelry and small trinkets. My graduate student adviser is done with his PhD and will be leaving. Is it necessary/ appropriate to give him a gift to thank him for all of his help?

You could give him a nice graduation card with a heartfelt message inside.
Gift giving is a nice idea but you need to be careful. If you are a student and taking classes from him, you may want to wait until the grades are turned in. The reason I say this is because teachers, even grad students need to be careful with receiving gifts- they may be construed as bribes- trying for higher grades.

If everything is over and grades are in, and you feel a gift is appropriate- go for it. Otherwise, I say a card with a note is just as nice. He can keep the card as a keepsake. It's a nice way to show your appreciation.
