I am traveling to Italy for a workshop &vacation. I want to take along some small gifts. Any ideas?

Q. I live in the San Francisco Bay area. I have some ideas (like key chains, bookmarks/postcards of San Francisco, regional candy like Sees Candies). What items to you think I could add to this list? Criteria: can't be fragile (don't want breakage), can be heavy and they must be easy to pack.

A. I live in northern Italy and bring See's Peanut Brittle back with me sometimes. It's different from candies that you can get here. The chocolates are just another brand though. there are many, many good chocolate makers throughout Europe. Italy hosts several chocolate festivals during the year including a huge Eurochocolate festival in Perugia in October. The keychains are a good choice and I like the bookmarks rather than postcards. You could also consider calendars with photos of the San Francisco area.

If you were visiting me, I'd want a loaf or two of sourdough bread. I was diverted through the SF airport on the way back to Italy from Denver last year and picked up a couple of loaves at the airport for the family that lives upstairs - that went over pretty well. If you're looking for handouts for people at the workshop rather than a couple of personal gifts, that isn't very practical though.

How can I find out how much my bottle of wine is worth?
Q. I found a bottle of 1995 Vino De Eyzaguirre San Francisco de Mostazal Reserva Especial Cabernet Savinignon at my in-law's house. They said they received it as a Christmas gift. How can I find out how much the bottle is worth?

A. You could do a search for it on sites like winezap.com or other types of sites and see if you find a price that wine is currently being sold for. I'd just do a google search using the name of the wine You should probably should enter the vintage (1995) as well. Several different sites will pop up. Some will give you tasting notes, others may just be establishments such as restaurants that carry the win and you will also find listings for sites such as winezap that sell wine via the internet. Please note that any price you find at a restaurant is at least a 20% markup from regular retail and that you likely can't sell it for the regular retail price either. If you don't get any results do that then you may want to contact a local wine shop. They may not be able to give you any info about it but they can get info from the wine distributors and these folks have a huge depth of knowledge about wine. One thing anyone who is interested in buying it will want to know is that it's been stored properly - meaning temperature controlled and on its side. It will especially important that it hasn't been kept somewhere either too warm or where there was a large swing in temperature. The link below is to a vintage chart which assigns ratings to vintages in specific regions/varietals. Robert Parker generates the list and is one of the most respected wine experts in the world. That should give some idea of how good the wine is.

Where can I find the best gift to offer for christmas in san francisco?
Q. I am looking for a gift to offer to my brother in law and I am tired of big chains store. I was wondering if anyone know of a place where I can look at in SF for an authentic christmas gift.

A. I agree with Drew, you would need to provide a lot more details.. however, I just happens to run into the following web site http://www.kaddoz.com while checking twitter that gives you a list of store in which you can find ideas for your brother in law , right now they do not have much content but it gives you an idea of good local stores to visit in san francisco.

Ideas for a surprise adventure birthday trip?
Q. Help! I am trying to figure out what I can give my husband for his birthday and running out of ideas. He loves travel/hiking/backpacking/mountain biking. We live in San Francisco. It has to be under $500. He also loves technology and photography. I am thinking - some sort of surprise weekend adventure trip. If you have any ideas, please chime in! Thanks!

A. If he likes hiking/mountain biking all that sorts why dont you get him a really nice gift and plan somewhere that he likes to hike and create a sort of search like you hide the item that you got him for his birthday and you create a map and then he has to go find it either that or a scavenger hunt. Idk sound like good cheesy ideas to get him out and about where he likes to be. good luck

If you had a free roundtrip airline ticket where would you go?
Q. I finally have enough miles to get one. I go to Vegas about 2 or 3 times a year anyway. I just went to San Francisco and have been to Orlando several times.
Where would you go?

A. If these miles are for overseas flights:

(A) It depends on whether you have friends. I would return to the Hawaiian Islands indefinitely. However, I have family there, and wouldn't have to pay for hotel and food. (Well, I do pitch in on the food. I'm not that cheap!!)

(B) The dollar goes a L O N G ways in the Third World. So the next assignment is checking out how safe it is, the health conditions, and whether the weather is to your liking. (Winter is generally a great time to visit most tropical places).

I love Asia. And the Philippines is not only less expensive than Japan, but EVERYONE speaks English, and the people are super friendly. (Plus the signs are not in "strange" characters).

If these miles are for U.S. or (N. America) flights:

(a) Alaska.

Strengths -- "Undiscovered" wilderness scenery. Awesome glaciers, mtns., lakes. And, if you do your research, you can see the Northern Lights, which everyone on the planet must experience, if they have the transportation.

Weaknesses -- If your idea of a great time is the mall, or manmade attractions, this isn't for you.

(b) The Pacific Northwest : Vancouver, Canada or Seattle, WA.

These are vibrant, energetic cosmopolitan areas. You'll have the look them up online to see if they're your type of vacation. You can get around by public transportation and walk about, huddle in coffeehouses or gift shops ; museums and cultural centers.

And, with a rental car, you can take the amazing ferries to incredible little islands.

(c) Manhattan. If you loved San Francisco, NYC is a bit more intense, but there is so much to experience. Just walking around, or taking the subways, you see so much. So much history, incredible architecture, and culture.

Of course you've got the shows, and the food -- perhaps the best dining in America.

Does anyone know any good bay area gift ideas for meetings?

Q. I am hosting a meeting out of state for a group of health and information technology professionals. I wanted to get San Francisco/Bay Area specific gifts for this group with a budget of $10 per person. Anyone have any ideas? This group really likes cookies, coffees, teas, chocolates, and anything edible. Since it'll be out of state, the gift needs to be non-perishable. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

A. Something specific to San Francisco would be great. Ghirardelli Chocolates, a key chain with a cable car, chocolate dipped fortune cookies from China Town, or a loaf of San Francisco sour dough bread and some suggestions that might work.

Here's a few websites that sell this type of thing:
http://www.cablecarstore.com/

http://shop.ghirardelli.com/category-exec/category_id/19/nm/Under_10

Since Napa Valley is nearby, you could buy Napa Valley wine. There are some under $10.

Hope this helps.

I need suggestions on creative ways to get new clothing donations for a non-profit. Any ideas?
Q. I work for a non-profit in San Francisco that helps adults with kids and families get off of drugs and rebuild their lives. About 35% of the people who come into our programs come straight from a jail, prison, or hospital and have no clothing excpet for what is on their backs. We want to start a clothes closet, so that when these people arrive, we have at least one new set of clothes for them. Unfortunately, we can't take old clothes because we had a bed bug infestation that was traced to a bag of donated clothes.

So, other than calling up Target and such and asking for donations of new clothes or gift cards, do you have any ideas?

It'll earn you some good karma points in addition to your Yahoo Answers points if you have a good, plausible suggestion!! = )
Ok, I can honestly understand why you would think that the clothes were not handled properly, but it shows how little you know about how easy it can be to transmit bed bugs, or how fast those same bugs can get transmitted in a group residential setting. Precautions were taken, and that is why we only can accept new clothes now.
Besides, not all companies are quite as heartless as the second person would like to make them seem. Plenty of corporations are willing to give to charities, even if it is only to make them seem warm and friendly when they really are not.

A. Here's what I am thinking..
Call the outlet stores and ask for donations in return you can offer PR, also check into the trendy clothing boutiques, they have to change their clothing lines quite frequently, and lastly shame on you for not having the used clothes properly cleaned before handing it out.

I need gift ideas because i told a friend that i bought her something in san francisco but i really didnt?
Q. I need a gift idea i live in modesto, california something not to expensive she loves neon colors and peace signs an that kinda stuff oh yeah she 13 its for her birthday that i wasnt aloud to attend please please help me i need it before practice this wednesday night
oh yeah she cant wear earrings

A. You can try going to some kind of headshop, or place in the mall, spencer like, and getting some strobe lights or black lights and a set that goes with it, and giving it to her. Shouldn't dig a hole though, in case you can't find a way to cover it up :p

Best gifts for someone who misses their hometown?
Q. I want to get my friend a gift for christmas and I want to incorporate her hometown, San Francisco, into her gift. She talks about it all the time and about how she misses it so much. I, of course, can't send her to California so I want something that will remind her of it. Anybody know of any ideas?

A. You may create his portrait (or photo with town) as a photomosaic which will contain images with his favor (San Francisco landscapes and photos of this). Year ago I create one poster for my friend with screenshots of the game "Halo" created using photomosaic software from Artensoft. Look at the examples of photomosaics and collages below.
