Big Bridal Shower and Wedding Gift Ideas???

Elizabeth

I'm getting married soon and I have people telling me they want "big gift ideas". One is for my bridal shower and the other is for the wedding. What do I ask for? I have basically everything I need to start an apartment. I'm trying to think of heirloom quality goods that my DH and I will use them as well as pass them on to our kids. Any ideas?

Btw, we don't drink so wine glasses are out. The only big ticket items that are left are a couch and dining room chairs but I don't want to ask for that.

Answer
But thats what they really want to know is stuff like that! For example if you have picked out a dining room set and it is at furniture store that has gift cards--they would prefer to get you a gift card for something you really want than at a store that you only want little kitchen items at.

We put a down comforter on ours (about 200 dollars) that we used our giftcards for. Do you have a kitchenaid? That is often a big ticket item. If there is a really nice vase that you want, or a large piece of art, a lot of brides put matching luggage sets.

Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn are both excellent places since you could just put on there a futon, or a large bookshelf (we put this one on ours and it inspired a relative to get the measurements and build it for us)

Or outdoor furniture, like adirondack chairs. A coffee table. It's more for those who are getting you a gift card--they like to feel it was actually a contribution to the coffee table.

People just want an idea of what you hope your living room looks like as most of them aren't going to be able to see your house. Or groups like to get together and get you one big gift or large gift card, instead of a bunch of 10-20 dollar ones.

It also helps with thank you notes. You can write to everyone who gave you a gift card that you used it to get "the bedroom set from our registry."

It's not greedy or that you think someone will actually get you a couch. But they'd hate to get you a really large gift card to Pottery Barn, and find out that the couch you really wanted was from Crate and Barrel and if they'd bought the gift card from there instead, you could have used it for something you really wanted.

Congratulations on the wedding btw.

Wedding shower ideas?

My maid of honor is throwing me a combined shower with both me and my fiance's sides of the familes (the ladies on each side) and then my bridesmaids will also be there. She wants me to think of anything themes or ideas I would like. Does anyone have any creative games, themes or ideas for bridal showers?

Answer
Around the Clock (Where hostesses assign times on the invitations; and guests bring gifts associated with that time of day, i.e. 8am - bath towels, 12pm - everyday place setting, 8pm - wine glasses. The gifts are opened from "morning to evening" order or opened and the bride guesses what time of day the gift giver was assigned. Then displayed with their time for all to admire.)

Around the House Similar to the Around the Clock, but assign a room to each guests; this assures the bride receives items for the whole house)

Naughty or Nice (Guests can decide to get you something naughty or nice - depends on how close you are to your families)

Christmas theme (Guests buy any Christmas/Seasonal items, or I have a friend whose parents gave the couple a Christmas tree, and the guest brought ornaments to hang and decorate their tree. This was at the beginning of Dec.)

Kitchen shower (Any and all things kitchen related - from kitchen towels to cookware to formal china.)

Gift Basket shower (Guests bring a gift basket of their choosing - may lead to random odd n' ends vs. china/flatware/etc.)

Recipe Shower (Guest receive a recipe card with their invitation, and share a special recipe with you at the shower. Then buy a gift that is used to make the recipe, i.e. wok, mixing bowl, blender, etc. You could even go as far as letting the guest make the recipe; however, this may turn some off as viewed as a "pot-luck shower" as getting a gift is usually time-consuming itself. Personal preference.)

Stock the Pantry a/k/a Pounding Party: (usually held pretty close to the wedding. Guests bring spices, seasonings, flour, can goods, even canisters, things that brides normally don't receive - ideal for the bride or groom who don't already live together, or have these items already.)

Hope you find some of these ideas helpful! Good Luck!

I need to buy a gift for a wedding shower. The couple has a very small registry, and the only items left are over $300. $50 is my limit. Any suggestions?

Answer
I agree with all of the above ideas- go over the registry and see what they've picked and find things to coordinate with it or that will fit in with the decor they are looking for.

Also- if at all possible- are there others you know of that need to get them gifts still? A possible solution would be to all pitch in some money and get them the $300 gift.

Otherwise you could always just give them the $50.

I know that it is considered tacky to include gift registry information in wedding invitations, but what about wedding shower invitations? As the idea of a shower is to "shower" the bride with gifts, it seems that registry information would be helpful to include.

Answer
It is acceptable to include registry information in a shower invitation.

How would you throw a Jack and Jill casino night wedding shower?

smlakergir

How would you throw a Casino night Jack and Jill wedding shower? How would the money and gifts work? Do you have a buy in? If so, how? ( Like $20.00 to play and the biggest chip winner gets a prize at the end and the money goes to the couple). I know where to get the tables and decorations, but how does it all work.

Answer
Yes, you have the right idea. That is exactly how it's done. They give you 20.00 to play, and the biggest chip winner gets a prize. And the money goes to the couple. It is better than a stuffy ol' bridal shower. And both men and women will have a blast. Provide food and drink, and a raffle, or silent auction will go over well, too. There is nothing wrong with a Jack and Jill "Shower".

How to combine two wedding showers into one?

kdub22

I am the maid of honor for my best friend's wedding. She is in the Air Force, and wants me to plan a lingerie shower and a traditional wedding shower into one big shower. Guest would be able to bring whatever gifts they wanted. I need ideas on how to create the invitation, decorate the venue, and other things. Can anyone help?

Answer
If it's at all possible, have the normal shower in the afternoon for closer family that might not be interested in attending the lingerie shower, or I suppose if her family isn't overly conservative, just have it as one big shower, and explain on the invitations that this is both a wedding shower and lingerie shower, then list all the places they're registered at, and leave it up to the guests what they want to bring. I would think a lingerie shower would be more fun like a bachelorette party, so it would be better to host at night with cocktails and snacks.
