Gift ideas?

zuckie44

I was wondering what (if anything) people get their children as a "big brother/big sister" gift the day their next baby is born. My first son will be 7 when my second son will be born and even though he'll be included in everything, I don't want him to feel left out or that more attention is being shown to the baby. Also, my mom, sister-in-law and mother-in-law are planning my shower. What is something I can get them as a thank you gift for all their hard work? It doesn't have to be the same gift for all three, but I have no idea of how to thank them.
What great ideas, everyone! Now my problem is deciding which one to do!!

Answer
Involve your son while also giving him a gift. Get him an inexpensive digital camera. (CVS even has 1-time use digital and video cameras that are very reasonable) and give him the job of documenting what is going on--taking pictures of the baby, of what's going on at the house, of what's going on in his life that you are missing while in the hospital, etc. And if it's not a disposable camera, he can keep it for years. http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?sr=1&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2254197&origkw=digital+camera&kw=digital+camera&kwCatId=&view=all

For the folks who gave you the party, it's so nice that you want to thank them with a gift. Have you considered sending them each flowers? 1800flowers has "Happy Hour" bouquets that look like mini margaritas, starting at $30 + shipping http://ww12.1800flowers.com/dataset.do?dataset=10361&cm_search=happy%20hour

Or, have a photo book made for each of them filled with new baby pics. You can upload your photos to Snapfish.com and then order professional-looking photo books complete with captions! http://www.snapfish.com/tourphotobooks. These start at less than $15 each.

Ideas - wedding gift for future sister-in-law?

My fiance's sister is getting married this Sunday. They just announced it officially two days ago. (Very last minute). Need ideas for a really great gift. Please, serious suggestions only. I appreciate your thoughts in advance but criticism is not necessary.

A little background:

My fiance and I are not close to his sister (C) or her fiance (K). She is not a girly girl, we both don't know what she likes at all. Her fiance is a techy computer type. They both have dogs that hate each other. "K" already owns his own house and it's pretty much furnished except the unfinished basement.

The gift has to be really nice and something that I hope they will like or at least be impressed by. The budget is about $400 but I'm willing to go over for the right gift. Gift cards and cash are out - my fiance doesn't like it.

I had thought a nice luggage set but remembered "C" didn't like the last one she got as a gift. No idea where the honeymoon is, or if there even is one. No kids yet.
A few more details:

Neither of them cooks. They eat carry out EVERY DAY. They don't travel often. I don't know what they do with their time to be honest. They are not having a traditional wedding ceremony - just the reception for about 100 people.

They don't work out often. They don't do "cultural" things. They don't do much of anything! Sorry...I'm frustrated because I just don't know enough about them to get them anything.

Answer
The best wedding gift for a couple throwing a rushed wedding is a little relaxation. See if there is a massage therapist that specializes in couples massage that you could get to visit the newly weds. You can google therapists in your area, or use a phone book. Normally you can get a good hour and a half for around $150 per person. Some of them will even come to you, rather than you having to go to a spa!

What are some good baby shower gift ideas?

Ashley

My sister-in-law is having a baby shower next month and I am not sure what to get them for a gift. They registered for mostly high priced items that are out of my price range. I am looking to spend about 30-40 dollars on their gift. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
The thing I appreciated most for my baby shower wasn't the cute little onesies and thumb-sized socks, although they were adorable. My friend got me a little divided-up basket filled with things like baby nail-clippers, one of those little nose-suckers, a thermometer, etc. There was baby shampoo and lotion in it, and Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Plus some lotion and bath salts for me. She also gave me these hand-written coupons. There was on for a weekend where she would watch the baby, one to take me out for lunch, things like that. The cute clothes and stuff like that are great, but that one I got was very personal and thoughtful. I still use the basket to put diapers and wipes out in the living room so I don't have to go all the way into baby's bedroom when I'm cooking or something.

Okay so my family is doing this secret santa thing and I picked out my sister-in-law. I was thinking about getting her something for the house like an appliance but I'm under a budget of $50. Any gift ideas?

Answer
A gift certificate for a massage at a local day spa. Some gift certificates are impersonal, but that kind of gift certificate really says, "Take some time out for a break, I think you deserve it." In my area, I can get a gift certificate for a 45 minute massage for $50.

My future sister in law's Bridal shower is in a couple of weeks. I'm not sure what to get her. She is in her early 20's, and pretty conservative. Any ideas would be helpful?

Answer
Get her something off her registry. Those are the items she really, really wants. If you want to add something extra to the gift, then jazz it up. For example, buy all the items on her registry she might need for baking cookies. Then, go to the grocery store and buy the cookie ingredients. Type of the cookie recipe on a nice piece of decorative paper and assembly everything into a cute package or gift basket.

A good gift idea for a very young widow?

Slim

I need a good gift idea for a very yong widow. My sister in law lost her husband last week at the young age of 24. She is 18, and he died exactly 8 months into their marriage. I want something that will really touch her heart and to help her during this greiving process. She is also 15 weeks pregnant.

Answer
If she is willing to part with some of his clothes you can have a quilt made out of them. They can get a bit pricey so if you can have some people help you out with the cost that would be a GREAT gift! http://originalquilts.com/memorial_quilts.htm
http://custommemorialquilts.com/memorial-quilt-pricing/

Or you can go to www.starregistry.com and name a star after him. They send a certificate, map with the coordinates and a little booklet that tells you how to locate the star. I got one for my sister-in-law, father-in-law and myself after my husband died.

Getting something for a young widow is tricky, especially if the death was shortly after marriage. I was 24 and it was after 6 months of marriage. Little things are nice but things that are more personal and that can be kept for years to come are so much better!

My sister in law recently purchased a high priced kitchen table for a early Christmas gift. I don't have a lot of $ to spend on her but would like to get her something very neat that she will cherish. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Answer
A tablecloth or runner for the table might be good, or some simple but elegant centerpiece might be nice if she wants to have the table looking stylish when it's not being used.

I've noticed that you can get some good deals on vintage table linens in antique stores, thrift shops, or church fairs. I got a really pretty cloth from the 1930's with a neat art deco print. It had never been used (still had the tags on it). You might be able to find some high-quality linen or embroidered cloth that you could wash, iron, and tie up with a pretty ribbon.

You might also get a very simple glass bowl for a centerpiece between meals. Clear glass with some polished rocks or marbles might set off the table. A nice basket to hold fruit would be useful and decorative.

Or you could make her a runner for the table. Just get some nice fabric (a couple of yards of some interesting textured fabric, maybe?) and either hem the edges or finish them with some decorative edging.

I think you could also get a set of place mats, trivets, or hot pads to insulate the table from hot dishes for under $50. Those would be useful and also protect the the table.

High school Grad loves Sondheim, any gift ideas?

quickquest

Hi, My sister-in-law just graduated high school. She is very smart, and is going to a great school next year. We want to get her something extra special for graduation. She loves Broadway, especially anything Sondheim. We were looking for tickets to a show for her, but we don't live somewhere that has any quality productions. Also, she has a large collection of soundtracks, and sheet music, so that isn't really going to work. Any other gift ideas? Something creative, fun and/or useful would be best. Thanks!

Answer
How about a Sondheim biography or a set of them? He is a fascinating individual.

Here are a few:

Starfall

I'm trying to brainstorm some inexpensive gift ideas for my sister-in-law's 25th wedding anniversary. I found a list of the Top 40 songs from the week of their wedding in 1986, and I was trying to come up with things I could put into 25's, such as Hershey's kisses/hugs. Any other ideas?

Answer
Put together a CD with songs from the era of the marriage date.

Assemble a memory photo album with pictures highlighting 25 years together.

Create a poem, write it in silver ink, and display it in a silver colored frame.

What to get my "sister-in-law" for christmas?

Shadow

I say "sister in law" in quotes because I am not married into the family just yet. She is 22 years old, the same age as me, but we are not close. She is a country girl and the only thing I really know about her is she doesn't want anymore scarfs (something the girls get a lot every year). She has been in the family not yet a year. I don't want to spend more then $15 seeing as I have over 20 people to shop for. Have any cute gift ideas?

Answer
Bath stuff (Bath and Body Works has lots of small sizes, so you could get them on the cheap)
A gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure
A decent pair of gloves (TJ Maxx or Marshalls always has nice designer pairs for under $15)
A candle (Maybe vanilla? Everyone likes vanilla.)
A journal (I saw a cute one on Amazon, where you write on sentence a day)
Some stationary
A calendar (maybe with horses, since she's a country girl)
A coffee, tea of other kind of food gift basket (Target & Walmart has some cute ones for about $15)
