Sometimes, I've tried recipes in a jar that just didn't come out so good. What would you suggest? I don't want to just to the regular old Chocolate chip receipe from the back of a package. what should I get my parents for Christmas?
Q. I am a teen have a budget of $10 or less per person. I have most any non- specific craft supplies, but very limited artistic ability. my transportation is limited to the other parent. and I am most always with my mom or mom and dad, so buying anything for her is challenging.
specific ideas are appriciated, i don't mind putting in the time for a craft but it needs to look good with not much artistic talent.

A. Ok A. Person
I'm a big fan of "Mixes in a Jar" . You get a glass mason jar ($2 at the grocery) - and carefully layer various dry mix / party / cooking recipes in the jar for artistic effect. They look like this when you're done.
http://gingerbreadblog.com/2010/11/gingerbread-cookie-mix-in-a-jar/

They're not just for "cookie mixes" - ANY dry mix will work. So for mom you can do Cookies / Bread / Muffins / Brownies even Dry soup ingredients . We received one last year that had several kinds of dried beans/split peas...dried herbs and spices.... etc. for dry bean and split pea soup mix . They look great in the pantry - and they give the folks something to do later after Xmas.

For Dad - you can do more "Guy" stuff in the jar. Dip mix (to mix with sour cream for potato chip dip) - Soup mix - Dry BBQ Rub mix .... Chili Mix Anything where there are several dry ingredients you can layer up in a jar.

You can also Google "Gifts in a Jar" "Mason Jar Gift Mixes" etc. for more recipes and ideas.

Hope that helps.

Ideas on how to package unshelled pecans for Christmas gifts from kids to teachers.?
Q. I am looking for ideas to do this for my children to give to their teachers this year. Money is tight and we have a ready supply of pecans coming off our tree right now. These are by no means cheap at the grocery store and thought it might be a nice gift. Just trying to think of nice ways to present them but still inexpensive. Thanks!

A. You could always present them in pint size Mason jars. Liven them up a bit with Christmas fabric on the round inserts and screw the lids on. Maybe include a jar of dry cookie mix you make yourself that uses pecans and include the recipe to finish the cookie dough. Tie festive ribbons on the jars or gather clear wrap or tissue paper around the jar!
